My uncle had a steel pan this size, but his had feet on the bottom of it. He bought it in Korea while he was there for the Korean war with the Marine Corps. When I was a wee little boy, he used to park me at that pan cooking beans while he and my dad cut timber. One of my earliest memories is of me wrapped up in a itchy, green Marine Corps. surplus wool blanket, tending the fire and cooking beans during a damn blizzard in December in northern Kentucky. I can still see my uncle Jim handing me a giant spoon like you'd hand a sword to a knight, handle first, resting on his arm, and saying "Don't you burn them beans, boy!" I imagine some Korean guy back in 1952 went through pretty much everything you're going through in this video, Chandler. Keep heatin' and beatin', buddy! Love the videos!

We used to make a small pit in the ground fill it with wood, once reduced to coals cover the coals with rocks and once the rocks were hot we would put a cast iron pot inside filled with beans, brown sugar, a spoonful of molasses, onions, and bacon... and a bigger pot upside down and over it(handle welded to the bottom) then burry it... let it slow cook all day while we cut firewood and some of the best baked beans would come out of it for dinner.

Only about 20 minutes in on watching this video, but with the way you are talking about it the size of that pan makes me think back to my time I spent in the Boy Scouts. That pan would have been great in use during our camping trips.

Your comments are turned off on the last 2 videos you just posted here in August of 2024. You have no idea how often I check to see if you are back. Your "need a tool make a tool" has forever been stuck in my head and saved my butt a few times. Made what I needed rather than panic. You influenced me more than you could ever know. I even made all my own forks and knives from watching you. I hope that you are back to stay.

Chandler, I think it'd be cool if you made and/or tried to make some woodturning gouges. I think they're just thick rectangular pieces that are rounded long ways down the center then sharpened.

Cook up your bacon then do taters on one third, eggs on another, with sausage taking the last third... Perfect size pan for camp cooking for 2 people. One pan to cook up the whole meal makes for less dishes to do. I had a steel pan about that same size and condition for camping and loved it, me and the ole lady would make breakfast in one pan and when we were in a group camping it was perfect for doing up the taters for everyone. Sadly it was stolen with a bunch of other gear and I never got a replacement for it beyond a Teflon pan of the same size. One suggestion for such large pans, put a handle on the opposite side, just a simple loop handle, if you have something heavy on one side of the pan it can tip really easy when picking it up with just the one handle.

Perfection.... Right up to the point you poured the milk into the eggs. Giant mistake but so many people got that bad habit from somewhere and it has permeated our society for generations but it is wrong. If you want to know how to make perfect eggs that wanker Gordon Ramsey has a video on KZbin about it and it is spot on the right way to make perfect eggs. Thanks for all the videos for all these years Chandler love your content

Finish working the bottom of your pan while it is cold. You will be able to smooth it out. If nothing else, just warm it, but, don't get it red..

The other pans hand forged that have no hammer marks. They may hammer the bulk of them out but the reality of it is that they just grind and sand them all out.
