I loved the cleft welds. I made me wonder why you didn't use a cleft weld in the video where you welded two pieces together to make box jaw tongs. Was there a specific reason?

I would not have been able to set up the weld because I was working with a finished pair of tongs and the jaws did not have the thickness to allow me to make the split. Also it wasn't really necessary for the box tongs because I had enough mass on each piece to give me the time to set up the weld. Cleft welds are great when you are dealing with pieces that are different in size. Sometimes the smaller piece will cool too fast while you are setting up a drop-tong weld and prevent it from sticking. A cleft weld allows you to use the heat from the larger bar to maintain the welding heat because everything is held together.
