The later M90 superchargers off the 04-07 GTP came with a drive-by-wire throttle body. Not sure the throttle flange would match that Gen 3 blower, but the 04-07 blower (gen 5 m90) are more efficient. Also, there is a tool out there to machine the snout down to run a smaller pulley, and all you need is a drill. As someone who has messed with a lot of GTPs, that blower sounds like its spinning about the stock speed for a 3800, so you can definitely go down a couple sizes on the pulley. The 3.6 is going to be way more efficient at moving air through than the 3800 could ever dream of being lol. Awesome build! Thanks for the inspiration.
@BlackthumbTV
@BlackthumbTV 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the info! I had also considered driving the blower off a custom pulley on the alternator to fix the issue, but I'm trying to contain myself as I don't think this engine can handle much more (given what I've seen from the turbo guys). The drill-tool sounds quite interesting though, I'll have to keep that in mind just in case.

As a Subaru guy and love your content. This is the kind of car shenanigans. My 1st swap was a JDM EJ207 in to a US Sti. Doesnt sound special but back in 2009 it was rare because of the US spec STi was a completely different ECU, sensors and wiring. I had to solve all these things myself, no guides, no kits. Nothing against the bolt-on guys, I just need more of a challenge. Im blessed with the ability and knowledge to completely assemble, install, manufacture small things, wire and tune. This channel is gold to me. Thank you Blackthumb.

It doesn't make as big of a difference as you'd think. I tuned a Miata with an intercooled supercharger kit, where the intercooler was after the supercharger/throttle body, meaning it would see both boost and vacuum. It did make a difference in both time to build boost and time to build vacuum, but nowhere near as much as I had anticipated. This setup builds boost as fast as you can open the throttle effectively, and change to Decel/vacuum delay isn't noticeable vs the stock manifold.

If i may: the design is very practical and definitely works for your project. However, if you wanted to improve the design of your super charger intake, you could make it more arrow like to help improve the ease of air flow. As it stands, the intake works and very well at that. The air thats being pushed through it, though, has a LOT of right angles to go around in order to get into the engine. It may not provide much more boost than what you have here, though it would definitely be easier on the super charger in the long run. Love to see DIY car projects though! Great job!

Oh my goodness You're so close to making a homemade intake plenum with built-in heat exchanger! Bending sheet aluminum fins arranging them internally so that they're baffled that the air gets forced through them welded in place internally with two fluid pipes on both sides in a series that connect to an external heat exchanger

It was a thought, but Richard Holdener did a video on a 3800 with this supercharger AND a ZZP intercooler kit. The long short of it is that, while the temps dropped substantially, the HP gains were minimal. So I deemed it to not be worth all the additional fab work.

Love the supercharger on a subaru engine! I looked into it once when I owned my 03 outback but couldn't find any examples of supercharged engines

i love it, minus the engine mounts lol so for all my custom with a k builds, get ya a set of late 90's early 00's gm torque mounts for a 3100-3800 series engine car (transverse mount) they'll mount to just about anywhere you can weld two 3/16th plates to, and 2 bolts per mount, keeps the engine from rocking back or throwing itself forward on every shift :) love the build again, not being a keyboard warrior

Way back when before all the aftermarket support and tuning if you needed more fuel for boost we would get a cold start injector out of something, they just mount with a flange, and wire it to a pressure switch to come on whenever you needed it

You should put some solid motor mounts on it. Got alotta movement at the moment... solid mounts around the board are just the way to go

For all the turbo fanboys out there: you're right. Turbos are more efficient and generally better for mid and high range power. BUT! A proper roots or twin screw blower setup will provide electric-car-like low end torque and works instantly. They love being short shifted and just "feel" the strongest. Also the sound oh lord the WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE is intoxicating. More so than aggressive turbo spin and blow off valves. I've had NA, single turbo, twin turbo, centrifugal, and roots type cars and the roots/screw blowers are the most fun to drive; the second being the twin turbskis. Thanks for coming to my ted talk

I had actually planned to say something like "this build reminds me of driving a Tesla" but I know how the car community feels about EVs didn't feel like being burned at the stake. And too many people are just focused on getting the biggest horsepower number. Which is also fun, but this is fun too. Turns out, you're actually allowed to like multiple things 🤷

Finally some one did what I have been thinking of doing all these years you have inspired me my dream subie is a forester with a h6 supercharged and sti transmission the supercharger would make it so I don’t have to worry to much about emissions and low torque boost for the win

That was very well done, I like it! You forgot to mention that it couldn't have happened without the super cool high-tech AC aluminum TIG welder! I have a couple of those superchargers laying around but I never did anything with them yet because I don't have the super Hi-Tech AC aluminum TIG welder

There's a number of key tools that got me through this. The standalone ECU, the welder, the injector flow tester... But the welder was the most recent acquisition and I got it in hopes to do this project!

me and my boys are planning to do a build similar to this with the same engine but in a 2001 subaru outback h6, we also found aftermarket sites that have built forged internals and what not for the EZ30R engine. it will be a glorious build.

Greetings from New Zealand! We do some Wacky shit with JDM cars here (Worlds best Rotary tuners & engineers for a start, and an endless supply of grey imports fresh from japan) - but a supercharged H6 Legacy is something i've not seen, and I *love* it. I'll take a screaming supercharger over a turbo every day of the week lol.

One other thing you could do to increase, not necessarily boost, but how fast it comes on, would be to reduce the volume of that intake plenum. That's a lot of air volume for that little supercharger to compress. If you could reduce the plenum volume by 50% I bet you'd see a large benefit in boost response.
@BlackthumbTV

Out of curiosity I just checked a datalog, and I go from vacuum to full boost as fast as I can push the pedal down between shifts (less than a second). It actually comes on so fast that I grenaded second gear, so I gotta be careful with it!
