I really do appreciate the fact that you take fish keeping and aquascaping and strip it down to the basic essentials. I have just gotten into this recently, and the HUGE amount of opinions and aggression towards each other in this hobby is astounding. It seems like everyone has their own opinion and they believe that only they are the only ones who are correct. You are great at sharing your own story and letting the audience choose their own path. I know my fish keeping skills will greatly improve from watching your journey.

I at first did not like the black water then I got fed up of doing the huge water changes and just accepted it. Got some Neons and Glowlights and yes they do pop more. I also found that it makes the albino fish pop too like the bristle nose plecos. So if you want to do a black water tank I would recommend looking at the albinos.

I have a blackwater by accident. Got around to re setting up my 30gal that has been in storage for almost a decade, decided to do a soil capped with my aquarium gravel I saved to make it easier for live planting. The soil immediately released a tonne of tannins and ammonia. Finally have the filter almost cycled and established 3 weeks later (there was a lot of ammonia) and now that the murkiness of the water cleared up to reveal a clear but dark environment I rather like it. I have many plants they are growing up to the top and creating some nice natural dark spots at the bottom. Should be ready to introduce fish this weekend. My question is, knowing the tannins will eventually dissipate, what is the best way to keep the tannin level up when the water starts to "clear" without completely disturbing the aquascape? I rather like the natural look of the water and would hate for it to "clear up".

black water is good for water condition is because tannings are acidic, which is the result of fluvic acid and other acid leaking out into the water column. When the water is acidic, ammonia turns into NH4+, which is harmless to fishes, unlike ammonia.

Serious question why do you not need to do water changes? Clearly there’s still waste been deposited into the water? (How much depends on stocking) so makes sense to remove/dilute? Granted you never gravel vac a BW tank due to microorganisms and beneficial bacteria within the broken down botanicals but you still need to do W/C.

I think I will go with blackwater south american tank. is there an ideal size for black water? or is it just ratio of biomass to tank volume that is relevant? So far I'm thinking I can easily get a 100 gallon on market place for just over $100 CAD, and I can just refurbish it with new silicone. Number of fish will depend on the size tank I get, but hoping to fit: - Minimum 4 angel fish (if I have 100 gallon, I might consider adding a few discuss unless angel fish and discuss absolutely cannot mix regardless of the size of the tank) - a school of neon tetras ( if tank size permitting a school of other tetras too) - Bolivian Ram - loaches - cory cats - bristlenose plecos - swordtail - not sure about the snails, will have to research if there are any legal within Canada from South America that will be beneficial to the tank additional considerations depending on tank size: - cookatoo dwarf harem (if even legal, definetly not going to look into black market stuff, but i just saw this fish in passing and it's pretty darn cute) and for the plants I'm going to try to stick with SA vegitation, but it's dificult to google this information. I don't know if you or your commentators can point me to a very detailed and organized guide, I'm having troubles building a relevant search string for google search.

How do you maintain the pH in your heavy planted tanks? I have a problem where the pH of my 70l planted neon tetra tank creeps up to about 8.2 when my tap is 7.5 and I have all the botanicals and tannins that are supposed to lower pH but don't seem to be working for me. I did a pH test late at night when lights had been out for a few hours, the pH dropped to about 7.8 so im sure its the plants causing the pH to rise during the day.
@mattb231
@mattb231 3 жыл бұрын
It is not your plants directly, more indirectly. It is actually carbon dioxide. The more CO2 in the water the lower the PH. In the day your plants will use up CO2 hence your PH rise and vice versa at night when they aren't.
