Way back in the Stone Age yes the seventies 😂 when I started fishkeeping. A local friend had an established pond in the garden of a house he bought. The previous owners had netted out their goldfish before moving out. Along with most of the lily’s. But there was still a wide range of other established plants. In late spring he put in a batch of WCMMs. They thrived even during winter with over a foot of ice. So darn strong and hardy. He would as they multiplied harvest once a month. Splitting them into two groups some in totes/ tubs in outbuildings unheated they even spawned as long as the totes did not freeze during the winter. The others he would over a week increase the water temp to acclimate the fish to community tropical tank temps. The same methods worked for me for both standard and long fin variants

My fish store owner told me that cardinals and rummy nose tetras are two of the worst fish for adapting to new environments. I had a hard time getting 6 cardinals established is a tank with other peaceful fish (corys, cherry barbs, aquatic frogs, white clouds). After I finally had a couple weeks without one dying I had an ick outbreak that only killed the cardinals and cherry barbs. I'm sticking with neons now that have had no problems in my other tank.

It's interesting how people have such differing experiences. Mine being similar to your exp in losing cardinals. Now I have happy and healthy neons and so glad to have them. Personally I think the biggest difference is based on the health and quality of the fish than the type.

I had the same experience with one store where I got 10 (!!!) and lost 4 of them. Then I went to a second one that was actually supposed to be worse (literally one of the best rated aquarium stores in my country vs. a plant store that also had a small pet section lol) and out of the 6 new I got, I lost 2. :( I checked parameters daily, but from my research online, most people also say the same -- they're horrible at adapting to a new environment, but when they're settled in, they are pretty much unkillable. Then again, I also heard some people say that even water changes with slightly too big temperature differences was enough to shock those poor things, but mine are doing amazing now that they're settled in, luckily. Neons are also gorgeous!

Great list! The two that surprised me were Cardinal Tetras and Reticulated Hillstream Loaches. I've been in this hobby since I was a child, and there was the prevailing notion that Cardinals were sensitive fish. So, to be honest, I've avoided them for decades. No more! I have to give them a try. The same is true for Hillstream Loaches. I've been wanting to try keeping them, but I had heard that they were difficult. I'm thrilled to learn otherwise. Really enjoyed this video. Greetings from California!

I feel like Bristlenose plecos need a shoutout. my beloved 10 year old Sherbet I rescued from my friends tank after the entire tank completely got nuked from orbit. The entire tank just turned green and smelt awful killing all his barbs in the process, he thought everything immediately died soo he took 3 days before he cleaned it to mourn. The water just festering the entire time Guess who was found COMPLETELY FINE in the castle, that’s right, Sherbet. I then asked to take him off my friend since he wanted to get rid of the tank all together and lo and behold, the lil dude was perfectly healthy somehow. That day I learned bristlenoses are basically immortal soo they do deserve a mention imo. My little guy I’ve had for 4 years now after the incident and no issues here ether

I agree that Sewellia Lineolata and the entire Genus of Sewellia is really hardy, which is why they have managed to thrive even with how few numbers were in Australia when import restrictions started. But I feel its important to add that Hillstream Loach is a much MUCH wider catagory then you have used it here (including Borneo suckers and Lizard Loaches) and you probably should have been more specific as many of those are quite fragile.

Lots of albino corys(4 died) and 7 platys, 3 plecos( 1 8" common, 4" horned?, 1 other kind not sure), 2 angels, and a bunch of other fish. Unfortunatly the tanks are to small for the fish so I found a 90 gallon for 20 bucks and im working on getting it ready. Yeah, I know he just said giant Dan's are super peaceful, but those fish are little psychos. They nip and bite. They're fast they jump out.

I have 4 tanks, one with loaches that prefer 80 F. Been using the standard heaters but wondering why no one seems to use a pad heater underneath the tank with thermostat?

I love cardinal tetras but unfortunately the zebra danios were aggressive towards them and my tetras did not survive. My red eye tetras are doing much better.

Catfish should be at the top of your list. They are indestructible. This is also why releasing catfish into the wild is very very bad.

While the Giant Danio is a hard to kill fish, it gets along with basically no other species. Do not put them in a community tank with other, slower, mid-level species. They’re large and aggressive and they know how to use both those traits.

If I may suggest putting the name of the fish in on of the corners during the discussion of each one.

Hillstream loaches survive at 15C. You have a sale 😂👍 Im building a no heater tank. Winter water temperatures inside get to 15C. Hillstream loaches sound ideal. One question. Do you think a golden chinese algae eater would tolerate them in a 4ft planted tank?

Chinese Algae eaters are tropical, they're not good tank mates parameter wise.

I have terrible luck with Cardinals i seem to have to replenish the stock on a yearly basis. I very rarely see them die they just vanish. It may be the stock im getting but the last lot i got from my LFS were terrible i shouldn't have bought them.

Why albino Cory's i would say most cory's in general are good just that Bronze Cory's and Peppered Cory's are typically the cheapest. Albinos as with most mutations you possibly have to deal with genetic weakness due to intensive interbreeding, line breeding, because the foundation stock is typically derived from one fish. Cory's are pretty bulletproof but higher temperatures for the most part can turn them belly up. The only typically agreed Cory species for higher temperatures aquariums is the Sterbai Cory, these are the only go to Cory species that are put with say a Discus, Butterfly ram aquarium, two cichlid species that seem to prefer higher end temperatures.

Cool video! Few months ago I saved some fish from an aquarium which was on sale because owner had no time for it. He had a huge cardinal tetra in it but super skinny, the Fish looked very bad. Now this tetra is in my tank and it is healthy and fat😂
