BLACKWOOD & BONE, Part 1

I've been waiting for a long time to do this drum. A client of mine, with whom I've worked on several projects shared on this channel, found a big chunk of African blackwood for a pretty incredible price. You'll see for yourself, of course, that the wood is substantially (not quite fatally) flawed. It turns out there was just enough for the shell and, hopefully, enough material left in the offcuts to make a pair of rerings.

Love this channel! This has been my main resource as I went about building my own four piece stave drum set out of oak and cedar wood. You make everything so clear and explain what you're doing and even things that go wrong. It's a shame you don't have more views, but then again, I guess drum building is a pretty niche subject matter. Thanks for this video and all the other ones!

The blackwood looks great on the surface, I'm looking forward to watch it completed with hardware. I like the idea of the thinner shell because of it's high density and maybe stiffness, the tone will might hearable differ from your former snares. I'm sure you will inlay an exciting air vent! Did you think about an outer plyed ring to catch up the undermeasure diameter?

Awesome video man! I always like how transparent and genuine you are. A lot of people, when they make a mistake, just play it off like nothing even happened. You could have easily not said a word, and no one would have ever known. But... since you do tell your viewers whenever you make a mistake,. we get to learn from it. That's pretty huge man! So thanks! You asked if any of us have questions. I do. 1.) Would you please make a video where you make a full sized kick drum? Even if you make it out of the cheapest wood you can find; I am simply dying to see the process go down for such a big cylinder. 2.) You sometimes mention "the buyer" in your videos, but as far as I've seen, you never advertise your "business" in your KZbin videos, so... where do you get these buys from?

Hi, Michael! Thanks for the kind words. I have not made a full kit yet, but I have an even bigger project on the horizon. The cylander will be between 32 and 36 inches. As for your second question, don't do this as a business, but there have been a number of individuals who've reached out to me to build them these particularly custom drums. Many of these end up as the videos. I work with the buyer to determine shell dimensions, species, and design specs. Thanks for watching!

Several comments: 1. That blackwood cant must have cost you several hundred dollars. It is typical for such boards to have lots of defects. 2. I can only imagine the glorious smell in your wood shop, especially with no effective dust collection (a trash can?). 3. Blackwood clearly is beautiful, has superb tonal qualities, is hard a a rock, and takes the finest details when turned. 4. You must not want to keep making kits if you don't use push sticks when using your saws. It's only a matter of time. 5. It's a testament to your skills that you can obtain such precise cuts with rather primitive equipment.

Is your table saw insert flexible? Because it seems it is and of course it can cause unevenness. You can make zero tolerance insert.

I don't understand why such a large piece would be cut up. Small tailings are always available, but large pieces like this are getting much harder and more expensive to find.
