This is a small video to show you my Blackworm Culture Setup. Also you might be interested in how I harvest worms and feed them to the fish. I'm a big blackworm fan and so are my fishes. It is tasty and healthy to them. Please have a look and let me know what you think. If you like please subscribe my channel and give me a thumbs up :-)

Hi , congratz on the great vids. I have been looking for black worms for quite some time now and it has been chalenging, to say the least, to find them. Are you also able to sell a few cultures? I am begining a Geosesarmas (vampire crabs) breeding farm and also will be moving to wild bettas. Black worms would just be fantastic for them both. I live in Portugal. If you are able and willing to help we can exchange emails and discuss it there. I would reeeaaally apreciate if you could help. Cheers m8

Try a sandy bottom... and you can comb the worms out? The amount of sand is key. 2-4cm deep, spread evenly should be good.

Great video. Very straightforward and informative! As others have said, sponge is a great idea. Another similar technique is to use small Marimo moss balls. The black worm love living in them. Every now and then, pick one or two out, drop into your main tank(s). When the fish have harvested all the worms, pop it back into the worm tank/farm and new worms will find their way into the moss balls again. I have a small, 7l, tank that I use with the supplied filter, which I only switch on every few days (but not the heater - worms don’t need it). I also farm bladder snails in the same tank, as I use both to feed my pea puffers. My betta, larger neons, and galaxies also enjoy the worms. For anyone who isn’t bothered about the aesthetic of seeing a colony of worms living in their main tank, it’s also possible just to start up a colony in there. I don’t do this with my puffers because they’re greedy and will keep eating until they can barely move 😆.

I've tried to set up a culture 2X and both times lost the entire culture w/ overfeeding. Waited just a few days after my nose told me it was time...no mercy! I'm encouraged by your video and love the sponge idea! What kind of sponges are they and do You keep your air stone on the bottom with a weight and a sponge? I think I'm ready to give this the third attempt. Thanks for the great video! Really well done.
@aboutbetta11574 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the video and thank you for the kind comment. The sponges are just some medium size foam material I had left. It doesn't matter too much. I tried bigger sized filter sponge, the only different was it was easier for the fish to pull the worms out so the feeding was over very quickly. I use a heavy air stone, it stays down due his own weight. I keep my fingers crossed that it works better for you this time.

@@aboutbetta1157 they still growing well for you? Would you do me a favor if you get a chance? Leave a thermometer next to or in the tub? That seems to be the debate... what temp is the best for these guys
@aboutbetta11573 жыл бұрын
I just checked it is 16°C/60F. I think since the worms can be found all over the northern hemisphere it would be even better if it would be colder. Then you would be able to provide more feed because it would slow down the rotting process , what would mean better reproduction of the worms.
@erick61023 жыл бұрын
@@aboutbetta1157 thanks! that makes sense. I live in San Diego and I’m thinking I should be able to grow them outside as long as it doesn’t get too cold or too warm, and even it it does, I’m sure they will survive, just not reproduce during the temp extremes..

It depends on how many worms I have. If I recognize the food is gone very quick, I reduce their number by feeding the fish. I would say I feed about 2 or 3 times a week

you have them with daphnia but have you ever tried with scuds? you think the scuds might eat them? I would like to have some worms (my dwarf frogs love them) but I keep all my feeders in the same tank; right now it's scuds, daphnia, fairy shrimp and bladder/ramshorn snails. the scuds do occasionally eat snails, though.

Scuds have even been proven to be cannibals. I've never tried it but I don't think it will work.

Hi! Do you use your regular water or do you treat it? I have found my water is high in chlorine and chloramine. When I tried to treat with Prime the worms didn't like that.
@Anna-tc6rz2 жыл бұрын
You can get filters pretty cheap. I use a couple whole house filters I got from menards. They're ~20 a piece one uses a string filter $7 for 2 and a catalytic filter is ~30 on Amazon. Make sure it's a catalytic carbon filter, it removes chloramine much better than normal carbon. Edited to add I'd still treat it with a water conditioner. Personally I prefer api with stress coat

Amazing video, great idea keeping daphnia and worms together and sponge for feeding and harvesting, how many times do you feed them in a week.
@aboutbetta11574 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I can't say. It depends on how many worms are actually in there. I throw feed in and when it's almost gone, I give them more. If I notice there are so many worms that I have to feed them maybe even twice a week, I take many of them out for my fish. Thank you for watching the video. Cheers

what sort of filter/air pump do you use for the blackworm culture? Considering the daphnia does not like fine bubbles whereas the blackworms love oxygen, how do you get around that?
@aboutbetta11574 жыл бұрын

Your setup is much like how I raise my snails, just an airstone and a piece of broken coral but of course you also raise daphnia. I feed my snails primarily blanched leafy vegetables. The sponge harvesting is a clever idea but I also notice that detritus worms do that too.
