While the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has become the most wildly successful franchise of all time, the series took a long time to get going. Long before Marvel ever started producing their own movies, studios took a chance by embracing the comic book genre in a way that defied conventional wisdom. The film that opened the door for all that was to follow was 1998’s Blade, starring Wesley Snipes as the titular vampire hunter. At the time, Blade was a little-known character unless you were a serious comic book fan, but New Line Cinema took a big swing by giving this horror-action movie a significant budget. Granted, one could argue this wasn’t outside of their wheelhouse, with the same company having success a year earlier with their adaptation of Spawn, but Blade was a much bigger deal to audiences when it came out in August of 1998.
Indeed, the film seemed to open Hollywood’s eyes to the potential of more comic book movie franchises beyond Batman, and its 2002 sequel was an even bigger hit. One could argue that without Blade, Bryan Singer’s X-Men might not have gotten made, nor Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man and so on. Indeed, it’s an essential piece of comic book movie history and an appropriate way to kick off an all-new series here on JoBlo Originals, Marvel Revisited. In this series, which is written, narrated and edited by Kier Gomes, we go film-by-film, examining how the MCU came to be by profiling all of the movies that helped pave the way to the MCU as we know it now!

This movie is ahead of its time in every way: * It had a black protagonist * It didn't have a love story * Is a superhero movie that took everything seriously, being R-Rated even before Deadpool proved to be effective * It had action scenes that became popular with THE MATRIX (even before The Matrix was made) * Even the cinematography made it look like it was released recently, despite being over 20 years old

@@brianlagrant9757 Race wasn't completely out the picture. When Frost and Blade are talking in the park, Frost tells Blade to knock off the "Uncle Tom" routine. When a person calls a black person an "Uncle Tom", they are basically calling them a race traitor. I've never seen a white person call another white person an Uncle Tom, so I really doubt the writers would've had Frost say that to a white blade. I agree no politics or racial agendas but in a subtle way his race was alluded to with that terminology.

Blade took the one,man army trope (Commando,Rambo, etc, etc) into vampire films and blew the doors off !!! Then there's the cool,hair-cut and tats !!! LOL. Deacon Frost was a good villain. It could have easily been written and performed as a petulant child but he was very calculating and serious about his endeavors, cocky enough to establish a difference with the elders but resourceful and studious to come across as much more deliberate that the character could have been.

Great to finally start seeing the masses recognizing the groundbreaking masterpiece this movie really was. Most people, aside from most critics, knew it at the time, but in the years since most of anyone forgot about it and/or how great it really was. Was my #1 comic book movie until The Dark Knight knocked it down to 2nd. Both of those movies are in my top 10 favorite movies all time list, ranking alongside Kubrick, Spielberg, Tarantino, Ford Coppala and Scorsese's best works. Dude this is so weird cuz I’ve been on a Blade tangent lately as well. Just watched all 3 today. The first “Blade” is so good. I hope the new Blade film will be good with Ali. The opening club fight is amazing. I remember the original theatrical trailer for this which isn’t the one on KZbin and I can’t find it anywhere but when I saw “Armageddon” in theaters they showed the “Blade” trailer and it scared the shit out of me being that I was 9 years old. I remember it showed a quick shot of the vampires in the club scene covered in blood and it terrified me. Took me a couple tries to watch the first one cuz I kept getting scared but I powered through it and it was absolutely worth it. When “Blade 2” teaser trailer came out of him jumping out of the building in one of the first sequences of the film I was so excited. My dad took me to see that as well and we loved it. It’s my favorite Marvel character along with Wolverine. Even with the MCU. I’d rather watch Blade any day or any of the X-men films minus Dark Phoenix and Origins.

I was 9 too when it came out...my dad took me to see both and it was amazing...I remember being excited for blade 2 with him jumping out the window scene. Man those movies where beautiful. I was in shock watching 3. Like what the hell is happening here?

@@BASED-SENSEI ooohhhh man yeah dude that scene was the original teaser trailer for it. Came out of nowhere and I was so happy. But I have a question though. See back when how we saw trailers like that only in cinemas I think we could just go and enjoy the film when it came out. Now if a trailer drops a bunch of channels breakdown every frame and make predictions. Do you feel it hurts films doing that bc it puts spoilers potentially in ppls minds then if it turns out to be true then ppl get disappointed n complain there was barely anything new outside the trailers?? Long question and comment I know but I feel back then you saw one trailer and didn’t have anyone potentially saying spoilers and you just went to see it and be amazed.

@@pab1381 that is true..computers I didn't even use at the time or had one.yeah I hate it when they speculate frame by frame because 80% of the time they're wrong and I get hyped over nothing .then what really happens is underwhelming. I think it was easier to appreciate back then...you had to go to the theatre and see the trailer or wait. There's something to that I can't put into words but kindve reminds me how back then we just did things and it was the norm kindve like if you were couldn't get past some game or needed cheats, you would go to the supermarket and look through the current magazines, I remember doing that alot... anyways I don't know where the hell I was going with that

@@BASED-SENSEI yeah no I get what you mean. But yeah the overhyped thing is a better way of putting it. Thank you. Ppl don’t even realize what’s happening. One film example, at least to me, that was effected negatively by this type of thing was Godzilla vs Kong. Every fight scene was shows in trailers even if it was quick. But ppl broke it down n then when they saw the film, they already knew mechagodzilla was gonna be in it.

12:00 Well, we technically already have a cameo by Mahershala Ali as Blade in a post-credits scene. At the end of Eternals, we hear his voice. Sure, it’s not a full cameo, but it is still a cameo.

Never considered Blade a superhero movie back then. God it still holds up so well tho! Especially Snipes and Kristof. I don’t have a lot of faith in MCU Blade...

@@McD5791 I was in Maine visiting a friend and a group of us went to the theater to watch Lost in Space with Matt LeBlanc and Heather Graham and the late William Hurt when I seen the first trailer for Blade. And it made me not care that lost in space really sucked because I couldn't wait to see Blade and just that trailer alone was better than Lost in Space the entire movie.. :-)

I've always wondered why the vampires tried to recreate their own version of Blade, but it never occurred to them that they were already successful. Why didn't they ever just try and turn a another pregnant woman? They did it with Blade's mom. It seems like they'd just do it again, since it worked so well.

I like blade and I think it's a really good movie. I liked blade 2 even more than the first blade movie. Blade trinity I thought was alright and could've been better but I didn't think it was bad. Blade 2 though is my favorite of the 3 film's.

That opening scene -awesome, set the tone for the whole movie, Wesley was perfect you could tell he really loved the character. As for the new Blade I like MA and I hope it'll be great but I think the movie will be a watered down child friendly soft-ass version esp if he's around Spiderman - I hope im proven wrongggg.

I've seen Blade 1 and 2 two days ago and they are still a master piece, it's really balanced, comedy, horror, great martial arts scenes, story, music, characters, it's perfect, before blade there was spawn in 1997, that movie was so good, ive seen some youtubers mocking spawn and blade and worshipping modern Marvel movies like they were master pieces, I prefer blade 1 and 2 and spawn than 80% of MCU movies, most of them are so cringe and not interesting, specially from 2013 until now, some are ok but nothing special

I hope the M. Ali's interpretation of Blade is series, instead of a movie, I feel that the series's since Endgame have a better track record than the MCU movies nowadays. Therefore I feel Fiege could take his time and tell a compelling story with the character.

I saw this at the theaters at the time Wesley snipes was taking a chance and Stephen goyer on blade one of marvel characters and I heard it was rated r so I was intrigued not sure how it was gonna play out being a comic and superhero fan and taking marvel characters unlike d.c. plus the superhero genre was fading out especially batman and robin stunk . After watching blade at the movies I was blown away what a great action packed definitely violent movie but overall the dialogue and everything I loved it thank you. I meant David goyer taking a chance
