There's an old tradition in Japan among Samurai that they meticulously care for a plant as a central part of their personal shrine. When the Samurai goes on what they know is a suicide mission, they pray at their personal shrine, then symbolically kill the plant as they know no one will be there to take care of it. That's what Blade was doing by cutting off the roots.

Blade is actually really loved by us oldschool comic book nerds as it was one of the first MARVEL comic book movies to come out and kick so much ass! I strongly recommend watching the second which was directed by Guillermo Del Toro. They made a third one but the only reason to watch for you would be to understand the reference made by Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool Wolverine. When he said to Blade in the movie you never liked me its because it was said during filming that Wesley Snipes did not like Ryan Reynolds so Ryan made fun of that in the Wolverine Deadpool movie :)
@steved1135Ай бұрын
Yes it is indeed loved by us old folks. I'm 53 and have been collecting comics since I was 12. I was elated to see this movie when it released. I have to disagree with you on the 3rd movie however. People rave about 2, but I found it to be very one note, over dramatized and somewhat silly. But number 3 has some actual comic book content...

7:25 "This is definitely giving Asian influence" 80's-90's Hong Kong action was a game changer, and Hollywood noticed by this point and had started to copy the style and importing the real thing; people like Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Jet Li, Chow Yun Fat, directors John Woo ("Hard Target" "Face/Off") and Corey Yuen ("The Transporter") and fight choreographers Yuen Woo Ping ("The Matrix") and his brother Cheung-Yan Yuen ("Charlie's Angels"). The choreographer on "Blade" was Jeff Imada (The Crow, The Bourne Supremacy/Ultimatum) who is Hollywood but has worked extensively with Hong Kong talent and crews as far back as "Big Trouble in Little China" (1986). The other thing happening in the 90's was anime going mainstream in the US. There were always one or two dubbed shows on US TV going back to the 60's, like "Speed Racer" and "Kimba The White Lion," but there was a huge boom of anime in Japan during the 80's and in the 90's, home video and cable stations like Cartoon Network really opened it all up to US audiences. This movie draws from a lot of 80's and 90's cyberpunk anime like "Ghost in The Shell" and "Bubblegum Crisis" and horror-fantasy action anime like "Wicked City," "Demon City Shinjuku" "Ninja Scroll" and of course "Vampire Hunter D"

During an recent interview Snipes said one of the reasons that he accepted the role of Blade was because he and his friends had never seen on screen a bad ass black vampire hunter who was skilled in weapons and martial arts killing vampires. So he said why not. Reportedly Snipes was interested in portraying the Black Panther character for many years but was never able to make it work. Also if you're interested there is an anime version of Blade. Like a Marvel anime 12 episode series. The anime version Blade uses a Katana sword like in the movie but this Blade has studied 3 deadly sword techniques that look almost supernatural and they are very effective for killing vampires. Deacon Frost also appears in the anime series but he is much older than the movie version.

Fun fact: Whistler didnt exist in the comics. It was actually the Spiderman TAS (The Animated Series) that came out in the mid-late 90s that created the character of Whistler. I believe that was also where Blade's look changed into the more biker-esque look. In the comics he had more of a 70s aesthetic.

"Why don't you do something?" Re: Mr Crispy suddenly coming back to life and biting Curtis. You know "fight or flight?" Well, there's a third option that gets skipped over a lot. Freeze. It's actually more common than most people think. You're frozen with indecision. You know you should be doing something, but nothing comes to mind, so you just stay there, panicking. Most people experience it in nightmares, where you want to run away from something, but stay in place. The longer you stay there, the worse the feeling gets. She froze when he attacked Curtis, but ran when he started chasing after her. Also pretty common. When it's happening to someone else, people sometimes forget that they need to do something or they're next.
