This is the movie that saved Marvel and opened the door for the MCU
@JM-nd9zfАй бұрын
How? So many people say this but there's no validity to it. Financially, Marvel only made like $30,000 from selling the rights to make this movie. It didn't spark some "comic book movie renaissance" either. The majority of people going to see this movie at the time had no idea Blade was an obscure comic book character. It was generally just considered a vampire movie. Also, X-Men was already well into production by the time Blade hit the box office, and had been in pre-production since 1993 or 1994. So the narrative that the success of Blade is why studios started to make Marvel movies is wrong. X-Men was coming whether Blade did well or not. X-Men is what really proved that superhero movies were still something the public wanted, because it was an actual superhero movie, with known superheroes. And, unlike Blade, the X-Men movie had a ton of merch which actually did make Marvel millions because they still had the merchandising deals.

@ThatSamoanGuy26 күн бұрын
@@JM-nd9zf It had a 40 million dollar budget, and only made $17 million opening weekend. It EVENTUALLY made a profit, but that took time. When it comes to "saving" a studio from bankruptcy, there's no such thing as taking time; it either saves them right away, that opening weekend (maybe two), or it doesn't. Blade was a success, but stop lying by saying it saved the studio. They weren't even in trouble, finanically.

The first ever modern marvel movie, and still one of the very best, Blade is an absolute legend. It's hard to explain how accurately Wesley nailed the character. It's like he instantly understood blade and just poured it onto the screen. I love this movie so much.

This is technically true. The first mcu film may be Iron Man but the first Modern Marvel film was Blade. Everything before was from the dark ages lolol
@user-dv6gt5iw4bАй бұрын
Actually... the 1st "modern" Marvel movie was Fantastic Four 10 years before Blade. It was never released back in the day, but you can find and watch it for free here on youtube. It was extremely low budgeted, but surprisingly watchable.
@sarparker5362Ай бұрын
@user-dv6gt5iw4b It can't be counted for several reasons. The biggest that it was never intended to be released in the first place. They hid from the actors and crew that the movie was only made so that the studio could keep the rights to a marvel property. It was actually made 4 years before Blade in '94, but it was an 80's movie in every sense and I would in no way call it modern. It doesn't fit with modern movie making in any sense. it was packed full of 80's cheese. Even for the 80s it was dated, and it was actually made in the 90s. As a side note, it's also considered one of the worst movies ever made. Nothing about it is modern.
@user-dv6gt5iw4bАй бұрын
@@sarparker5362 LOL.. I know exactly why it was made. And you're right.. it WAS '94. I was thinking of the Punisher from '89 which comes in as # 2 .. that actual 1st Marvel property made into a film was done by George Lucas back in '86.. Howard the Duck. Yes, they're silly somewhat crappy movies.. but all 3 ARE Marvel properties and all came before Blade. ( Not counting the Captain America film from 1944 that was then chopped up into 15 chapters and re-released as shorts before the feature played. Btw: the Ang Lee Hulk movie from 2002 or 3? was also made mainly to hold onto the film rights. That was also mostly a crap fest.. but it still counts.
@neospock5034Ай бұрын
Actually Wesley Snipes delivered a completely new take on the character that didn't match the comics. Movie Blade was way cooler and more badass. Snipe's portrayal became so popular that Marvel changed the comic book character afterwards, to be more like the movies. Original comic book Blade was just a human who was immune to vampire bites. He was an expert fighter who specialized in bladed weapons (hence his name) but he didn't have any superhuman abilities. Wesley Snipes' version was a major improvement.

Awesome reaction as always. FYI, the only other culturally significant vampire project at this time was Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off Angel on TV. They share some lore elements but are different enough to please the same audience. I highly recommend those as well. Blade is kind of the unofficial beginning of the modern superhero movie age. There actually hadn't been a major one since the awful Batman & Robin. It influenced the Matrix series and inspired studios to take another look at projects that had been shelved like Spider-Man and the X-men. Marvel IP became the dominant superhero force at the box office for a while. Soon, Daredevil, Hulk, Fantastic Four, Elektra, and Ghost Rider followed. Not all of them were good, but eventually, this trend spawned the MCU. If you are looking for some other retro vampire movies from then 80s, 90s, and 00s; Fright Night(the original), The Lost Boys, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Interview with the Vampire, Queen of the Damned, and the Underworld franchise were all very popular. Sorry, but Twilight doesn't count. Real vampires don't sparkle, and they aren't emo, incel teens either.

This is one of my favourite movies. Every frame could be still shot, and it would look like panels from a vintage comic book. Blade brought the comic to life in an astonishing way. I hope you do the whole trilogy. The second is pretty good and the third is pretty rough, but they are all worth watching just to see Wesley Snipes playing that character. My biggest complaint is that Dr Karen Jenson never pops back in. Best Karen ever. I like to think that she's working for the Blade network in another city, still making her cure and other potions for the cause. RIP Kris Kristofferson.

So Blade is widely considered as the first *modern* Marvel movie before X-Men, Spider-Man and ofc the MCU. Before the movie, Blade wasn't much of a popular character but the trilogy made him popular and a staple character. Fast forward in 2011 Marvel got the rights to Blade back with Disney, and now we're getting a solo Blade movie in the MCU starring Mahershala Ali, which in fact we did hear his voice at the post-credit scene of Eternals talking to Dane Whitman.

The modern knowledge of vampires came from Brahm Stoker’s book Dracula from 1887. All the movies use that for source material (except Twilight. Those aren’t really vampires). Brahm Stoker based that book on old myths that are at least 1400 years old. Weakness to silver, stakes to the heart, sunlight and not having reflections all come from the old myths.

Frost was not a PART of the Vampire ruling class. He was called to The Table, like a criminal who broke their laws, with his outlandish night clubs and public parties, which brings the unwanted attention of the human authorities (against the treaty) and brings the unwanted attention of Blade. ANd it brings even MORE unwanted attention when Blade attacks a nightclub,, has a massacre, and property damage that draws even more attention from the press, fire department, victims' familiies, etc... They were trying to reign in Frost, not give him a seat at the table.

The beginning of Marvel's golden age on film with the first character of the comics to have a box-office smash. The 2nd Rated-R movie for a Marvel character after The Punisher (1989). Undoubtedly the first, real kick-a** Vampire movie. Following his first mainstream appearances on Spider-Man:The Animated Series (1994-1998). From the darkside of the Marvel Universe, inspired by blaxploitation films (a la' Shaft & Blacula) and debuting 50 years ago in 'The Tomb of Dracula' comics as one of Drac's many foes. Prior to being casted as Blade, Wesley Snipes as actor/producer was involved with developing Black Panther (formerly a Sony property). Frustrated with how to make BP, he received the BLADE script and said yes to it. Snipes had never known that Blade or Black Panther were both from Marvel. The Blade trilogy was written by David S. Goyer (Man of Steel, The Dark Knight Trilogy). The director Stephen Norrington (effects background) did a great job with this. Stephen Dorff (The Gate, SFW, Immortals) doesn't get enough credit as one of the best vampire villains on screen, Deacon Frost. The blending of everything in this film is phenomenal. His origins to the world he's lives, breaths and hunts in. No expense spared on blood, gore, suspense, action and drama. Cool merch with the prequel comic, Blade #0 to the soundtrack by TVT records and the PS1/Game Boy Color games. Part 2 from 2002 is great and Part 3 from 2004 is controversial. At the end of the day, it's great to see more love and appreciation for the Daywalker. RIP indeed to musician/actor Kris Kristofferson as Whistler.

From an old-time comic book reader, here'so some info that many younger folks aren't aware of. The original Marvel comic book character Blade was very different from this version. He origin was similar- a vampire bit his mother while she was in labor, and she died giving birth to Blade. As a result, enzymes from the bite got into his mother's bloodstream and affected her baby. Blade was born with immunity to the effects of vampire bites- he couldn't be enthralled or controlled. But that was all- original Blade wasn't considered a vampire himself, just a human with immunity to being controlled by them. He didn't have any supernatural or superhuman powers. He was an expert fighter who specialized in bladed weapons, who became a vampire hunter. The portrayal by Wesley Snipes was so popular with audiences that Marvel changed the comic book character to be more like the movies. They gave Blade vampire abilities like enhanced strength, speed and senses, plus a need to consume blood (his upgrade was put into a storyline involving Morbius). When the movie came out, the vast majority of moviegoers didn't know Blade was a Marvel comics character. The connection to Marvel wasn't advertised, audiences simply thought it was a cool original vampire flick starring Wesley Snipes. But the movie producers and studio execs knew, and Blade's success got them thinking about adapting more famous Marvel characters to the big screen.

Fun fact: Wesley Snipes was originally working on a Black Panther movie with director John Singleton and Denzel Washington was supposed to play Killmonger in the 90´s. But after some high profile comic book movies like Spawn & Batman and Robin flopped, no Hollywood studio wanted to finance it. Snipes then did "Plan B" and made Blade, which was a fairly low-budget production but made a lot of movie. So, Marvel Comics´ CEO then approached the big studios and told them: "If a B-list character like Blade can make so much money, imagine how much you can make with more popular characters like Spiderman, the X-Men etc. " and this is how we got the Sam Raimi Spidey trilogy & the Hugh Jackman X-Men movies.

None of this is true lol. Wesley did want to do black panther before blade but Denzel was never involved

I recommend you a great vampire movie for this month. Bram Stoker's Dracula 1992 (has a great cast too).

One of my favorite of all time Wesley Snipes films is "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar..." from 1995. Co starring Patrick Swayse & John Leguizamo.

Do you guys plan on watching the rest of the blade movies? Pretty sure there is even a tv series but its with a different actor.

Underrated? "Blade" is the first successful Marvel movie after the flop of Marvel's first movie "Howard the Duck" which is still a fun watch if you accept it for what it is. Blade is basically the Godfather of the MCU.

I'd first discovered Blade only a few years before this movie: from His Guest Appearances in the "Spider-Man" Animated Series, and I was instantly Impressed with His Character!🤔I was then Surprised to see Blade get His own Movie🤨but I was more Surprised by how Hardcore it turned out to be🤩even Blade Himself was NEVER allowed to be this Brutal in the Cartoons! (LOL) Wesley Snipes is the Perfect Actor for Blade😎and nobody else will EVER do Better!👌R.I.P. to Kris Kristofferson ('Whistler') who just recently passed away, IRL💔and I Recommend that Y'all watch "Blade II" ASAP!⚔
