This how I replace or flip the blades on a Makita 2012NB Planer using rare earth magnets to hold the blade. I bought this planer used and did not have the tools or manual for replacing the blades (knives). Makita gives you a magnetic blade holder, but I did not have that Turns out it was easy using small rare earth magnets I got from Harbor Freight. Amazon affiliate link amzn.to/1VepY0Y for planer blades that cost 50% less than Makita's.

I just followed your video and flipped my blades end for end. Cleaned table with isopropyl alcohol. The boards are coming out perfect (maple, walnut). WOW. (I had just ordered new blades, but I cancelled the order when I saw the new results. Thank You.

Great video... Just the facts... no dog or kid stories . I own one of these planners. Great job of showing how to change the blades.. Thanks

Alan cheers for this video. Super helpful. I figured out that I didn't need the magnets. By releasing the lock lever and turning the roller pin towards the front (or clockwise) a bit it gave me more a level plane to set the blade and clamping plate mated together onto the pin's locking grooves. Did both on the first try. Thought I'd share it for those in a pinch or w/o magnets (like me).

I've got the same planer and I love it. It's a little bit quieter than other lunchbox planers, which is one of the reasons that I chose it. Makita seems to me to be a bit above their competition in build quality too. I've got to shift one of my blades to get rid of a knick so this video will be of help to me. Thanks!

+Lex Boegen Don't move them too far as they wont be supported by the carrier. I would move them each a little in opposite directions.

Thank you. I'll keep that in mind. The nick is only about a millimeter or so, so it shouldn't need much of a shift.

Thank you. There are surprisingly little review videos in english in this popular planer. I am seriously thinking about buying one.

gamingSlasher Glad it helped. I haven't owned it long enough to review it, but it is well made and leaves a smooth finish. Makita makes good stuff. Well engineered.

Thanks! I made this for those that bought the planer used and do not have the magnets. Also to remind myself how I did it for the future. I forget things.

Great video! This tip with Matthias Wandel is great! I was planing pallets and i had one hidden nail wich pretty much damaged the blades on left and right side even though i was using metal detector. Two little spots. By the way, on some nails it does not work. I am using the security detector what bouncers/security people are using. What i also thoght, by just to turn around one blade with the new side would fix the issue. But this tip by Matthias is great! I will try that out! That should work! Many thanks!

They are so narrow and long, I don't know how you would hold them. Plus they are sharp on both sides.

Put small dowel rods or chop sticks in two holes slide the blade down the dowels to seat it, then install two bolts, remove dowels and install the other bolts.

I have the same planer, somehow its planing smooth but its not level, in the sense that my wood piece is slightly angled lower towards the right side. Can you suggest what could be the problem and how I may fix it?

+David Tolsky I haven't seen them for sale used. I lucked into buying mine from a guy going into a retirement community. You can watch on Craigslist, but usually you just see the Makita hand power planer.

I do like it. It is compact, not too heavy and leaves a nice finish. With the chip hood I can catch just about all the chips with a shop vac using Dust Deputy madebyalan.com/oneida-dust-deputy-review/ I have never tried the Dewalt go see Matthias review here kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6DWhYeZi99omZI
