CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Batty (Rutger Hauer) confronts Tyrell (Joe Turkel) and asks for more life, but realizes that it is impossible.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this futuristic science fiction drama, two firms are both on the working overtime to see who can be first to perfect a new and groundbreaking invention -- a technology that can perfectly recreate human tissue, allowing people to be replicated at will. One of the companies is a small, cutting-edge concern, while the other is a major multinational conglomerate, and in a world where such companies control the legal and judicial system (hey, are you sure this is science fiction?), beating them to the punch can have deadly consequences. The larger firm sends a team of thugs to destroy the smaller company's offices, just as inventor Ludo (Michael St. Gerard) is using himself as a guinea pig for his final tests on the replication system; things go haywire during the assault, and soon Ludo finds himself chasing his own manmade evil twin. Replikator also stars Ned Beatty, Brigitte Bako, and Ilona Staller, the latter better known as Cicciolina, the Italian adult film star who was elected to that nation's Parliament.

Honestly, who would think that calmly explaining to an angry superstrong robot that he's about to die AND you aren't going to help him is a good idea?! And who would trust that kiss to be just an innocent kiss, for that matter? XD

I love how here it is Tyrell acting like an unfeeling robot and Roy as an irrational human. Roy has a fear of death which, because death is inevitable, is illogical to a machine. While here Tyrell is unable to empathize with Roy’s all-too-human fear of death on any level and doesn’t even try. His answers to Roy’s increasingly desperate (and clearly as well-researched/considered as could be achieved at the time) ideas to save his life are cold, automatic, and unfeeling. He doesn’t even look Roy in the eyes. It’s not even that he treats Roy as not capable of having human emotions, it just seems Tyrell himself is so cold and based on logic that he seemingly cannot understand why Roy (or Rachel, earlier) would be upset. I think there are many reasons that Roy kills Tyrell, ranging from revenge to pure nihilism and denial based on his own impending death, but I think a rather large reason is that Roy wants to make Tyrell feel SOMETHING, because everything Tyrell says and does in that scene (and in his earlier scene with Rachel and Deckard even if Roy himself did not witness it) seems to place Tyrell above such petty things as emotion, fear, and death. I think had the man shown even the slightest bit of empathy for Roy, and expressed regret saying that he didn’t realize that Replicants would have such fears and would try to do better, that Roy may not have killed him. But Tyrell was so robotic and cold that all Roy could do to make him feel was to kill him. God this scene (and of course the movie itself) is brilliant.

"I've done...questionable things." "Also, extraordinary things. Revel in your time." "Nothing the god of biomechanics wouldn't let you into Heaven for." Roy has committed atrocities, but Tyrell dismisses them, proud of his greatest creation (Roy). Roy realizes that Tyrell is, for lack of a better term, "evil." Tyrell, a human, ironically represents the coldness of technology and scientific advancement. Roy, a replicant, ironically represents the heat of passion and human frailty. Had Tyrell been a good man, Roy might have spared him, as he spared Deckard (the "good" man).

***** He considers him a weak god, because he could create life, but had no power to extend it or give him solace in the fact that he would die. The religious gods could grant longer life, or give peace in death but Tyrell could do neither in Roy's eyes.

***** "When someone is a person they cannot help but think of others as people." Unfortunately, that's not true. In fact, that's what sociopathy is all about. It's an impaired sense of empathy, resulting in a lack of concern for the welfare of others. Sociopaths view other people as mere objects. Sort of like replicants. In this regard, Roy can be seen as a sociopath who discovers empathy right before he dies.
@Lietiel
@Lietiel 8 жыл бұрын
***** No, it wouldn't equal that. It was just a simile. Replicants were similar to sociopaths in their lack of concern for the lives of Humans, but that doesn't mean that they can be equated. Although I suppose some sociopaths can be considered robotic in certain regards.

Roy confessed to Tyrell that he did "questonable things," as if seeking pardon, only to find that his creator had less morals than he did, even though he had had only three years of life in which to come to terms with ethics. I always felt Tyrell would not have been killed had he not told Roy to "revel in his time," Sebastian's death though was uncalled for and very sad.
@88feji
@88feji 3 жыл бұрын
+Ahiba Sabala No I disagree with your understanding of the characters ... its not true that Tyrell "has less morals" than Roy. Do remember that Tyrell's mantra was to make replicants which are "more human than human", thats the reason why Roy and Rachel exists in the first place ... he did not create them just to torture them with short life span. The short life span was a requirement placed upon Tyrell by higher authorities (the police, society at large etc) due to the threat posed by the superhuman capabilities of replicants ... Tyrell's own ambition was purely to challenge himself to create replicants that surpasses humans even in the emotional department ... Thats why its wrong to suggest that Tyrell is "immoral", Tyrell merely had obligations placed upon him to fulfill if he is to be allowed to carry on with his scientific works ... Roy kills Tyrell out of anguish and disappointment of his impending death, to me Roy is kind of ungrateful towards Tyrell because his passion and appreciation towards life are all possible only because of Tyrell, its like hating the provider who gave you food but killing them because they did not give you more. And Roy also never put himself in Tyrell's position to sympathise that Tyrell's decision to put a short life span is not necessarily his own decision but something that was demanded from him to do by human society at large ...

0:54 Look at his face. The way his eyes look down in shame (avoiding eye contact) and disappointment & things unresolved. Tyrell's attempt to lighten the mood reflect his own self-glory & apathy for true good or evil. Roy wants redemption. He wants to get the dark weights & disappointment/ sadness off his heart. He wants light... even if it means admitting his deeds were dark. (he admits doing questionable things). He wants to share his burdens with his maker. Tyrell has no concern for this. He doesn't care about Roy's feelings.

Perhaps he learned that who he was was not an end worth pursuing. He was a combat model. Was it when he confronted his maker that he learned his existence was a mistake engineered by one sided and empty makers? All he could do was pass on a thing or something to a survivor. Ensure a chance that a memory of him would not follow him in physical death. He met a like person. One in tune who may keep his words in his heart and study them in his heart. For his death was not a meaningless thing.

@@ianmangham4570 Maybe my interpretation is incorrect. But I wanted to explore my emotional sense of it. He was made to combat others. A combat model. Maybe he (the nexus) was trying to deviate from his true nature and seek something deeper. Driven by guilt. But what he thought was his maker made the mistake of trying to glorify his mistakes. The nexus wanted relief. His maker redirected him back into his murderous nature.

Tyrell himself is aware that Roy has developed an intelligence that rivals his own, because Tyrell himself has just lost a game of chess to Roy before their meeting ! So why bother trying to lie to someone with enough intellect to catch your lies ?

As gruesome as this scene is, I feel like there's some poetic justice to it. Baty can't gain more life so he uses the little time he has left to make sure the guy who created him at least faces retribution for mass producing an entire race of superior but short lived slave labor. Heck, if you take Howie Chew's comment that Tyrell designs all the minds of the replicants then he may also have saved future versions from having to suffer as he has suffered by ensuring they can't be created.

Also, you know that Tyrell's actor is still alive, even 35 years later? He is a lovely person too, or so it seems from fan's interviews.

Amazing scene - the colours are like those of renaissance religious painting, the hand placed on Roy's head like that of a priest taking confession or giving absolution, the dialogue reflecting the profound disappointment of realising that the all-powerful creator is flawed and imperfect himself. Makes me shiver each time I see it, as if it were the first.

I love the fact that everything in the movie revolves around the eye ..... the EYES, the windows to the soul.. - the movie opens and closes exactly like how an EYE would wake up and go to sleep ! (the movie opens with the panoramic landscape gradually lit up from darkness and ends with the lift door (like an eye lid) closing shutting out all light sources into darkness) - in the beginning we see a giant EYE close up looking down upon the panoramic landscape too - does anyone notice that Leon tried to kill Deckard by trying to poke his EYES ? - Tyrell's glasses are so cool looking ... a pair of glasses fit for the EYES of a true genius ... - the giant advertisment blimp floating in the sky is shaped like an eye with a screen in the middle where the pupil would be in an eye .. - Roy kill Tyrell by poking his EYES - the Voigt Kampf test is a test on the iris of the EYE - Roy said "if only you could see what I've seen with your EYES" - the replicants and artifical owl have an obvious reddish glare in the pupil their EYES under a certain lighting condition - the first engineer the replicants went looking for is the chinese engineer who does genetic design for EYES, there's a big EYEball at his door front - one of the liquor seller had an EYE patch over her one of her EYES - this may be a bit silly BUT Leon do have very bulging EYEballs look when he's trying to kill Deckard ! All the eye symbolisms are never shoved in the viewers face like a loud speaker but are ALL so subtly done that it takes a thoughtful person to see their existence ... and yet there are so many of them painstakingly placed throughout the movie by the director ! Ridley's uniquely nuanced and lyrical delivery of his eye symbolisms are so wonderfully poetic and elegant !

As an update to my eye symbolism comment, I would like to highlight an even more important repeated visual symbolism related to the eye that I recently noticed, its the TEARS that flows from the eye : 1) Deckard unsympathetically revealed to Rachel that she is a replicant not a human but he was taken aback to see how she began to TEAR up emotionally, he softened and changed his tone towards her ... 2) Deckard mercilessly hunted down Zhora but when he saw the single tear rolling down the dead Zhora's cheek, he was stunned and filled with remorse ... 3) Who can forget Roy's TEARS in rain speech as a tribute to Roy's emotional appreciation of life ? If the open eyes represents being alive to observe the world around us as an act of living, the tears flowing from the eye would represent the emotional appreciation of life as life would ultimately be meaningless without an emotional appreciation behind the act of living...

I don't know where I read it, but originally when Roy crushes Tyrells head, robot parts were suppose to fall out. And Roy realizes that Tyrell was a Replicant himself. After that, Roy goes to the top of the pyramid and find the grave of Tyrell and founds out that the real Tyrell died 2 decades prior. At that moment, Roy realized that there wasn't any hope to extend his life. This scene is extremely powerful and very provocative, but if it went the way that I read it was suppose to go, that would've been an Ash twist from "Alien"

Whoever wrote what you read doesn't have clue about the source material or the film. The Nexus replicants in the Blade Runner universe are not robots or androids in the classical sci-fi sense, they do not have mechanical "robot parts". They are bio-genetically engineered and completely organic (you can also deduce this from much of the scene above). In the book, one of the only definitive ways to tell a Nexus apart from a human (on the physical level), is to take a DNA sample of bone marrow.

Bryan Ward that's interesting, though I don't know how you mean. My comment was based off the verse "all have fallen short of the glory of God." No one but Jesus can stand in the sight of God, for he was the only sinless man to ever live. But He is our advocate, which is the beautiful thing. If anyone wants to know what that means, I would like to tell you what I know (but I will not argue. I can tell you what I know from being close to Jesus, and then you can argue with yourself later if you want. Lol) That's not necessarily for you, Ward, but it might be, IDK.

jonas brave I remember awhile ago there was one of the hilariously bad syfy series "documentary" (in quotes because that's being generous to it's validity as such) type things. And in a commercial for it he even says "You wouldn't believe what these eyes have seen" or something to that effect, with a close up shot of his eyes. It was kind of sickening and even though he probably got paid well and sort of sold out at least he made some dough off of that stupid appearance. Still, he could do so much better. On the bright side of it all, I'll probably not even be remembered and he'll have this one roll that overshadows all to be remembered by for quite a long time. So there's that.

ParappatheRapper It's not his fault, nor yours for asking Rutger about the role. His Roy Batty was a centrepiece in a really timeless work of cinematic art - it has everything in it from cribbing William Gibson, Frankenstein and Metropolis to scientific hubris and the despairing humanity of racial persecution and the question of what makes a human. Both noirishly dark and glowing in a hopeful neon beauty it is the film that made Dark City & The Matrix and even subsequent homages to those films possible.
@Lietiel

+jonas brave Not really. Roy Batty was his best role out of a career that was fraught with mediocre roles. He had good roles in Nighthawks, The Hitcher, and Ladyhawke, but for the most part he chose scripts for rather lackluster films. Roy Batty is quite deservedly the focal point of Hauer's career.

Thats why the first Blade Runner is so much more sophisticated than the sequel 2049 ... the first one realistically shows us that replicants Roy and gang CAN be both passionate, full of humor and yet terrifying and intimidating , even Deckard is shown to be both mercilessly violent in one moment and yet remorseful towards his target the next moment,.. In contrast, the sequel just shows an overly idealistic portrayal of K, Joi and Deckard as purely kind-hearted victims of bullying without any personality flaws ... to me the sequel is too preachy and idealistic while the original is so gritty and tangibly real, I have no question about which one I love deeply and which one I find numbingly preachy and self-important ...

I'm not sure you are correct. The camera angle and ergonomics of the man's grip ensured that the gore was mostly in your mind. When Oberyn Martel got his head squished, you could see everything. Sometimes seeing less is more. However in this case, Martel was very likeable, and the engineer was not.
@tusheschannel
@tusheschannel 7 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean, Oberyn was very likable, hence why seeing him die that way was so distressing, but I suppose the bad feelings I had at this scene were for Roy, not Tyrell, it's HIS pain that drives this scene, not the engineers, despite the fact his eyes are being gouged out. Undoubtedly agonising as that would be, Roys pain stems from his very existence - created to be about as fine, intelligent and powerful as it's possible for a man to be, then given a tiny lifespan he can do nothing to change, just as he's beginning to understand his own true, brilliant potential. Imagine the sheer pain and rage you would feel knowing you were given the power to change the entire world, then denied the time to do so, so basically your entire life, your existence was created, just to mock you...another example of just how brilliant Rutger Hauer was in this movie.
@Dadecorban
@Dadecorban 7 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting point of view, and I understand it. I think I assumed his pain (arguably) is similar to everyone else's pain in a similar stage of coming to grips with impending death, and no more valid. Combined with my ever decreasing empathy for Roy, the scene wasn't as impacting as Oberyns was for me(even as I was already aware of the outcome). Thanks for your thoughtful response. It was well described.

Joe Turkel (the man who played Eldon Tyrell in both this movie and the 1997 videogame) has recently passed away at the age of 94, finally meeting all his creations in the after-life. R.I.P By the way, Sebastian didn't die with Eldon, actually. He just had a heart attack when he saw Roy killing Tyrell and was later re-animated in an ambulance, not before being officially declared dead by mistake due to his deteriorated state. He then escaped and re-animated Pris (who wasn't a replicant, but a human who believed that she was an android), turning her into a zombie. I know it sounds crazy, but it's totally real. Just google it

The prodigal son that came back in the Bible after doing 'questionable' things was actually welcomed by his Father, he ran to his son and embraced him and then celebrated his long lost son's return and then let him into his House Hold again full of joy and celebration. Yes, this version of the 'Prodigal' son's return is indeed quite dark.

I have found out: there are a few seconds of two different scenes to be reflectet each other, but the wrong way around, so to say. In the Trailer "The Prodigal Son" (Director's Cut) short after Tyrell said to Roy "Enjoy your time" and bevor Roy returns: "Nothing the god of biomechanics let you in heaven", during that sentence Roy is seeing in a close up, but on his left shoulder (on his leather coat) there you can see the thumb of Tyrell's right hand, only a few seconds (running time: 1.12 to 1.21). And now the weird thing: exactly that part of the scene you can discover in a former scene of the film, right from the beginning of showing up Roy is waiting for Leon. Roy make a fist and says: "Time enough", and in the following seconds you can see exactly the same close up of the later on scene "The Prodigal Son" but in a mirror Image, so to say laterally reversed because there is Roy's face but viewing now over his right shoulder (looking for Leon) and there you can see obviously a thumb on his right shoulder for only a few seconds (running time: 0.14 to 0.22). I had wondered: "What's up with that thumb?" and discovered later on in the film (like I had recently said) in the scene "The Prodigal Son" the thumb of Tyrell's hand on Roy's shoulder too, but this time an Roy's left shoulder-part. Got anybody a clue, why the director of the movie (Scott) had to do so? What is the meaning (if there's any meaning at all) of this laterally reversed sentence in two different scenes?

Blade Runner is such a unique film. Story wise is so simple, but its simplicity make its all so tangible. The characters the actors their performances. so on point. The film is the reverse of a cliche. it has all the hallmarks of sudo noire-esq film, and though most would be seen as a cheap knockoff, Bladerunner took those themes and storytelling tools and reaffirmed its rightful place in real film making. The rain soaked streets the beautiful damsel the romantic overtones in a dangerous town. And a ton of heart and soul, not to mention ton of twists and turns, and questions brought to the forefront. the who did it? And who's who's. BR is one of my most loved films. and the other all have some relation to this film. 2049 was ok, but it was no BR original.

Roy is more human than his creator. He has a deeper understanding of emotion and is not blindly carrying out what is asked of him and is exploring his freedom. Tyrell is doing what society wants him to do: create efficient replicants who can make better slaves. He sees Roy as nothing more than one of his great scientific achievements that will advance humanity. This is what leads Roy to kill him. He wants to become human, not just a very powerful slave/robot.
