The appearance of the origami unicorn at the end of Blade Runner was in reference to the story of the last unicorn, where the king's hunter was sent out to kill the last unicorn for its horn, which when ground into a powder for an elixir could extend the life of the king by 100 years. When the hunter saw the runaway princess playing with the unicorn, he couldn't bear to kill it with his arrow and let them both escape into the land of rainbows. By letting Decker and Rachel go, Gaff had everything to gain and nothing to lose.

There's a third scene that supports the Deckard replicant thing. Its in his apartment with Rachel. He's in the background but you can see the glow in his eyes that the other replicants are also shown to have.

It's clear you didn't understand the dynamic between Batty and Tyrell. It's a retelling of the Frankenstein story. For Batty to have said "fucker" instead of "father" it doesn't give the story the symbolism it is telling by taking it back to Shelley's allegory. It means more for Batty to acknowledge Tyrell as his maker/father than it does to have him denigrate that story with the expletive. By having Batty say "fucker" it makes it vulgar and makes Batty seem less human in contrast to his maker.

Deckard's clumsy expression of emotion resembles that of someone with Asbergers. This played into my belief that he was also a replicant. This also explains the awkward kissing scene in the apartment. Neither can handle their emotions in a "healthy, normal" way.

I still prefer the voice over version because it’s how I saw it in the theater. But the Directors Cut has merit. As far as proof of Deckard being a replicant because Gaff made an origami unicorn after Deckard dreamed about it is wrong. Gaff’s origami reflects his view about the person. The first origami he makes is when Deckard is bitching about being a Blade Runner and wanting to leave is a chicken. He thinks Deckard is afraid. The matchstick represents Leon’s short life. The unicorn represents Rachel in that she is rare, a replicant that will live beyond 4 years. Well, that’s my theory at least.

I like your run down of Gaff's origami :) I've also been finding that people tend to favor the version they saw first in the theater (if they saw it in the theater). I actually kind of like the voice over for nostalgic reasons.

Even though Gaff verbally acknowledges Rachael won't live very long? I like where you're going with the origami as a symbol for her uniqueness, and she very well may live longer, but Gaff certainly didn't know that, so I think it just shows he found Deckard's "memory" files/origin, the same as how Deckard found Rachael's.

It never occurred to me until Fab 2020 that Batty killed Sebastian after Tyrell to eliminate the witness. I've seen the movie countless times (I bought the LaserDisc version when it hit the streets in the 1980s). I just assumed that Sebastian retreats from the scene but felt Sebastian was also as much a victim of Tyrell as he was and wouldn't hurt him.

Origami unicorn. I guess the Harrison Ford character is not a replicant. Two reasons: The origami was imagined by the character. OR The horn was not there before stepping on it, so it could have been a deformation caused by the stumping .

Ford says in interviews that he greatly regrets accidentally walking into Sean Youngs lighting and catching some of it in his own eyes especially because of how people have mistakenly used it as evidence that he was a replicant. Also the unicorn daydream and origami were implying that Rachael was unique, not that Gaff "saw" his implanted memories. Also many deleted scenes with Dave Holden, Bryant, Gaff would've definitely made it clear he was human. Also he reveals that his wife had recently left him for a rich Colonial off world developer. There is more proof if you watch Dangerous Days: making BR. Ridley Scott really only jumped on the Deckard is a replicant bandwagon solely as a publicity generator when he was putting out the Directors cut.

I saw theatrical cut first, simply because the other versions didn't exist at the time I saw it. It wasn't the worst movie I ever saw, it was actually pretty good. But then long afterward I got the DVD of the Director's Cut, and it was like an entirely different movie. I understood why - the Director's Cut tested badly with fresh audiences, but was intended to be less explanatory and more artistic. As art, it was superb, and much deeper than a simple noir with cool special effects.

Although, in the book (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep) Deckard *believes* he is Human, the possibility that he may actually be an android is suggested numerous times (mostly in the second half of the book). In my opinion, the story (of both the book and the movie) is better for it.

"Father" reminds me too much of the more recent 'Prometheus', when both David (an android), then later Vickers, separately address the aged Weyland Corp founder Peter Weyland as "father". This has led some people to question whether Vickers is also a robot, although personally I think not. Ridley Scott has obviously got some android vs human identity issues he's continuing to try & work through via his movies!

I felt that the music could have pulled me in more, some of the characters were lacking, i dont know if it was the dialogue or the direction, but the woman doing bad was meh. maybe their was no real chemistry, the movie as a whole i felt was okay, it could have been better, the action scenes seemed forced at least, the clip that you shown above, that was just meh. As for consumerism it nailed that perfectly, it was almost like too much tannins in a bottle of wine when you're watching the movie, you see the advertisements and how evolved as sheep we have become, and where we're ended up, yet no one in this day and age believes its going to happen.

Sometimes I'm at a loss to understand people. Currently, Blade Runner 2049 is history. I've seen both movies a few times, and I like both of them. Comparing them, is like comparing oranages to hamsters. They are different things. Yeah, yeah the visuals on the origional were amazing for the time. See, all that visual is like wrapping paper on a gift. Sure, it's nice, but if you open the gift, and the box is empty, what's the point? For all it's many faults, Blade Runner is a deeply human movie that's timeless. I'm often left wondering why people seem to totally blind to the obvious. I often have to put up people from work. They fly in from out of the country. They stay to long at work, and there is place for them to stay. I have the room, so I take them home. So, I'm putting up a couple of people. We stopped, and got chinese. There nothing to do, so we watch the origional Blade Runner. As we watch, we were absorbed into the story. There is the scene where Decker is trying to see if the woman is a replicant. It started as game, but the woman finds out she just a product made to order. She can't believe it. Later, she confronts Decker, and Brutally drives home the point, she not real. Decker feels guilty, so he tries to back it down. He can't. Decker was rapey? Holey Christ, that scene were he drives home that the girl is product made is brutal. The scene tears into a person. Just for one second, imagine that you found out, you were not even alive a year ago, because everything you know is lie. Damn. Then we see the replicants on Earth. We want to empathize with them, but every scene with them, they act like monster. Sure, they are slave that just don't want to die, but face to face they rip you apart. They don't even die normally. We want to empathize, but just can't because they are so different from us. At the end of the move, Decker is hunting the last replicant. It's like a horror movie. Thing is a vicious unstoppable monster, that decker has to hunt down abandon building. Decker is losing, but the replicant starts to die. He has only a four year life span, and it's the end for him. The replicant fights to survive just a few moments more. He chases Down Decker, and he his forced to jump for another building. Now Decker is hanging, and about to die. The replicant sees him hanging there. Moments frim dying, the replicant has pity on the man trying to kill him. He saves Decker. They are not monsters, just people made to be slaves. The replicants last act, is trying to explain what it's like to live as slave. So, I'm watching the end of Blade Runner with a people who I barely know. The movie ends, and we are all silent. One person says, "That ending scene, is consider to be one best scence in the history of movies." I don't know this, but I can understand why people think this. Were is that one scene in Blade Runner 2049? You just can't compare the two movies.

Directors cut for me. I want more life fucker is important for the story. How they cut the unicorn scene from the original is beyond me. One thing bothers me about Deckard is he doesn't have the strength of the nexus 6 models but he's an earlier model or a human. If Ridley says he's a replicant that's good enough for me. Why did Roy kill JF? He was no threat as the alarm had been raised before he left the elevator. He spared Deckard so why kill JF? BR2049 is a masterpiece. I heard people say it was too slow. That's bollox. I absorbed each scene, glance and movement because of the pace. The sound was stunning, visual effects masterful. I felt I lived it from the word go. I'll be going back a few times to suck up more of the world of 2049.

The book had entire replicant communities where Deckard was taken to a replicant police station and treated much more humanely than anyone at a human facility. This kind of ambiguity and faint within a faint is central to the book. Since this central element is starkly missing from the movie it makes perfect sense to reintroduce it any manner possible. An ambiguous identity of the main character being the only logical place to start. It may not be in the book, but given what IS in the book but completely missing from the movie, turnabout is not only fair play but logically unavoidable. I see no other way to reintroduce this central theme of the book.

PS. I've never heard of this idea prior to the video I watched before this, where I immediately said to myself, "It makes perfect sense that Deckard is a replicant in the never written sequel to the book."

I'd rather see a faithful adaption of "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by someone like *Christopher Nolan* who will keep the novel's title and leave "Blade Runner" in the museum of cyberpunk.

Well, i find "fucker" much more vulgar, which is not in Roy Batty's character by a long shot. "Father" is more eloquent, which is totally his style. Your opinions seem to be a bit unpopular, and i personally disagree with most of what you said about The Final Cut :P But well, don't let that discourage you. I mean, in subjective stuff like this it happens.

great video. thanks. I love the directors cut, its so immersive. my pleasure centers gush. I do hope the sequel maintains the mystery of the original and that it doesn't have a Hollywood plot. I haven't seen Covenant yet, tho I still like Prometheus a bunch.

the overall movie lacks proper explanations about lots of important things. I will have to read the book for it honestly feels like a puzze with two thirds of it's pieces missing. the only worst example of improper introduction and explanation to a sci-fi universe has been the halo games. I played the seven main games but apparently without the novels there is no actual explanation about pretty much anything that happened before the the main conflict began. to be honest, instead of sequel what this movie needs is a remake. but the sequel being made by more sensible modern writers will probably rectify a movie which was as bad as it was good.

the aggression is part of the scene as much as the artificial memory-the cold facade giving way to the animalistic. I thought that was fairly obvious?

Just one man's opinion here...long after the new blade runner came out....(NOT impressed with it BTW).... but that's another comment... as far as the 1st Runner, I actually like the 1st theatrical cut... yea the 'voice over' is forced.... but if you've ever watched an early 'film noir'...that's what it is like, and therefore, the 1st cut is how it is 'supposed' to be, NOT a cut years later, after the director has 'matured' or changed.... (his mind).... as far as Deckard being a replicant.... again, I think that is 'Scott' trying to 'force' his own idea, it goes 'against' the story line, period. I've noticed these young film reviewers and students seem to dissect each scene, but when you watch any 'behind-the-scenes' documentaries on most movies, you realize that 'making' the film is mostly a 'fly by the seat of your pants' , day to day trying to figure it out.... NOT everything is 'set in stone'.... This reviewer mentions the 'tears in the rain' line.... it turned out great, but that's not how it was written, and Rutger decided he didn't want to memorized alot of long meaningless lines like see-beams at Tanhauser gate, on and on.... so Scott let him improvise... maybe 'less is more' afterall...

He's human, no doubt. Always loved the lived-in future; not a gutted waste, nor a pristine futopia, but dirt and pockets and functionality. Finally, love the VO. No apologies. I'm a fan of hard-boiled and scifi and love the fusion. Campy? Hardly. I enjoyed Dick's novel, too.

I wonder how you can have "no doubt" about Deckard, when in the movie professional replicant hunters required lenghty and unreliable Voight-Kampff test to make such a decision.
@mitter352
@mitter352 6 жыл бұрын
Pavel Voynov actually the tests were pretty short and reliable, it's not until deckard meets the prototype that it becomes long and fuzzy. And he can be confidant that deckard is human because his humanity is at the center of the themes. If he's not then the movie loses a lot of its meaning

Once again, "A very advanced form of lie detector that measures contractions of the iris muscle and the presence of invisible airborne particles emitted from the body" is required to positively identify a replicant, and even that may not work on non-standard models. Deckard is portrayed as an emotionally stunted person at best, quite similarily to Rachael and Pris. Him being a replicant (== geneticallly engineered, vat-grown human with implanted memories) is a very reasonable interpretation.

Do you know the level of background checking that goes into becoming a cop or even a civilian working with them? A fake past is the sort of thing that throws up flags. Further, PKD made the character human even if Scott doesn't want to acknowledge the creator's choices.
@pavelvoynov5408
@pavelvoynov5408 6 жыл бұрын
Obviously, if Deckard is a replicant, his superiors know that. "Blade Running" is called so for a reason. It is a hard and dangerous job that few people can do well. Using a specially designed replicant is an obvious choice for the police. Replicant Deckard may be based on human blade runner who died (in the line of duty, probably), or not. PKD's opinion is not very important, given how loosely this film is based on the book.
