The iconic scene in Blade Runner where we get a first glimpse of the psychotic nature of the "Nexus-6" replicants. Leon doesn't take kindly to the bizarre questions posed to him by an interviewer working for the Tyrell Corporation to screen their workers...

Honestly, an extremely good warning was the hotel address. Leon processed an offhand mention of his hotel's address, one that was likely pretty new to him, much too quickly for a human - about like a google autocomplete or a computer rapidly processing the input and responding to it.

Good point. The Nexus 7s are at least as intelligent as humans and have detailed files on normal human responses to various stimuli, but they have no instinctive reactions to moral issues; all of those reactions are filtered through their logical subroutines first. This creates a tiny but perceptible gap in normal reaction time that the instruments can pick up. Leon should not have been confused; his confusion was a sign he was searching for subroutines he didn't have, that even a near-moron level human laborer would have (simply from living in that society).
@dangerszewski9816
@dangerszewski9816 3 жыл бұрын
@@orangejoe204 I think he was feigning the confusion, and constantly interrupting the test in hopes it would throw off the results, if he convinced the Blade Runner that he was too stupid and that's why he took time to process, or if he managed to create plausible deniability with the interruptions, giving his subroutines time to process and figure out the "appropriate" human response while the Blade Runner was answering a digression, he just might survive. You can spot the moment he figures out this has no chance of working (in a brilliant of acting acting and directing) and becomes more compliant, because he's realized his only hope is to shoot his way out.

Part of what people don't get about the Voight-Kampff questions is how the moral philosophies of humanity have changed after the nuclear wars that preceded the novel/movie. In this world, animals are unbelievably precious and rare, and a massive sense of guilt for their near extinction (and responsibility for protecting and nurturing life in the ones that remain) is now the central tenet of human morality. Obviously, you or I would have much more muted reactions to swatting a bee, having a leather wallet or even seeing a taxidermized stag head, but in the novel/movie, all of those things would be highly illegal and the mere suggestion would be enough to make anybody raised in that time visibly uncomfortable if not disgusted. They wouldn't be able to hide that reaction - a normal person would feel it right away. As is proven with the secondary character John Isidore, even a radiation-degenerated "chickenhead" human still feels pity for animals on an instinctive level, whereas even a top-of-the-line artificial human can't fake that reaction quick enough to pass a Voight-Kampff test. This "good" attitude of instinctual guilty reverence for even the tiniest animal life is used throughout the story to contrast the "bad" inherent lack of mercy or recognition for animal life by the andies/replicants, which is the whole point of the Voight-Kampff test. I mean, if you *don't* know what to do when you see a turtle roasting in the hot sun on it's back...

Her master smacks her for a mistake." The subject in 1717 would think it's justified for the master to punish her. You can even see on his face the exact moment he realizes his attempt to throw off the test by interrupting and creating digressions, and pretending not to understand questions, isn't going to work and he's going to have to start shooting. it's a very subtle change but you can almost follow the character's thought process.

Leon was playing both stupid and ignorant in the hopes that Holden would mistake him for a common radiation-addled idiot. Unfortunately for the andies, that's not what the Voight-Kampff test measures. You can be plenty stupid and still have the humanity to feel bad for a dying tortoise. There may be a procedure. I always felt Holden knew pretty much after the tortoise question that Leon was a replicant. I suspect Holden was getting his sidearm ready though; notice his hands are below the table as he proceeds to the next line of questions and he has his blaster out after getting shot. Leon basically got the drop on him- probably saw what Holden was doing, knew the jig was up, and reacted. Keep in mind the replicants have much greater reaction times than a human, so if Holden had made a more obvious draw of his weapon, he'd have known he would've been killed (assuming he suspected Leon was armed).

That split second of surprise&fear Paull/Holden shows at about 1:45, when he barely catches Leon's pupil dilate, then smoothly (but not smoothly enough, even for relatively dull Leon) tries to recover from while unlocking his own gun, is maybe the best bit of acting in this whole great movie IMHO. It also shows how laser-sharp someone would have to be to be a Blade Runner in the first place. Deckard actually gets away several times with being a lot more stupid than Holden here, and somehow lives to tell about it.

Fuck man this movie is so god damn cool man. Like immediately the replicant is addressing the shit we are all asking in general "how did I get here?" and all of that, much like with the media res of Deckard. And then you think of how heartless and unsympathetic it is to saving the tortoise, but in reality it doesn't know why it should. And by the end you truly understand that it does have a life, and that it like anyone else, wants to live. Fucking beautiful shit man.

'Suspects' is the term I'd personally use rather than "realises" since the test has barely got underway, therefore no firm conclusions can be drawn. As Deckard makes very clear later in the film, it usually takes "twenty or thirty questions, cross-referenced" to detect a Replicant. In response, Dr. Eldon Tyrell proudly boasts that it took "over a hundred" questions before Rachel, a Nexus 6 model, was revealed to be a Replicant. Well, Leon just happens to be a Nexus 6 model, too...

See Blade Runners like Holden and Deckard did have a “simpler” job like K says in 2049, they could interview their suspects than confirm their suspicions and proceed to take out them out but so many things can go wrong in that entire process plus it’s incredibly time consuming. Now I can see why the LAPD decided to just enlist Nexus 9s and had them brutally dispatch the older models with no prejudice
@anti-illuminati685
@anti-illuminati685 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the older replicants had lower intelligence and would be pretty easy to spot with VK machine or fooling them with an act like Dekkard tried with Zhora. The Nexus 6s are much higher intelligence and thus are much harder to spot. This would require Bladerunners getting much closer to interrogate their suspects which would put them in a lot of danger. Deckard nearly gets killed in every encounter with a Nexus 6, so I'd say their survival odds for Bladerunners aren't that good. I'm surprised that Gaff made it to retirement seeing that he had a disability.

As you can see he also takes questions to recreate a “desert” scene, with a purpose of being there…Leon was programmed to “obey” and then he needed precise informations. We simply would imagine a desert, we don’t mind why or where… and when doesn’t get answers from Holden his mind “crashes” and gets mad… yelling at Holden, getting angry… heartbeat increases… he’s cornered… and to get away from this…he shoots at Holden at his last question.

I think the Voight-Kampff test is honestly a spiritual test. The questions and scenarios are very primitively human. It’s to see if a person has a soul or not, which in this movie replicants do not. All of the replicant’s answers are logical and analytical and not in the moment “I don’t know.” Leon when asking about what desert or what a tortoise was was still very calculated.

i don't think replicants are "soulless", but they lack the deep socialization of concern for the now nearly extinct animals that's been engrained into standard people. They aren't soulless, they psychopaths. Normal human empathy is alien to them, so they have to fake it, like how psychopaths do in real life. Remember Tyrell asks Deckard "is this to be an empathy test?" Because that's exactly what Vought-Kampff is, an empathy test.

Okay so let me tell y’all a little story. I work at an amazon warehouse where i use a scan gun to scan the items we need to be shipped out. I am a “picker” because i pick out the items. Anyways i have a friend that is a problem solver in another department. Because he is a problem solver, he has a computer with him at all times. From said computer he can send anyone a message. Whenever you are picking and you receive a message the message will block your whole screen so you have no other choice but to read whatever the message might be. My coworker had asked if i had seen the original blade runner and i said no. He left it at that, no further questioning. The other day i was minding my own business, picking, the usual. I get a message on my scanner from him and it was the entire turtle scene, except with my name repeatedly throughout. He told me the turtle was walking towards me and the whole situation. At the end of the message he asked me why i wasn’t helping the turtle. I felt absolutely HELPLESS in the situation. On our scanner we only have the option “ok” after every message to clarify we received it. I had no choice but to accept the message without being able to respond or clarify i would help the turtle. Then when i saw my coworker later on he said that i would get a kick out of this scene whenever i do get around to watching it.

This is the internal conversation we all have when we wake up. Part of us is the test administrator, so confident in our authority over reality. The other half is our ID, that part that works from within the subconscious, to parse what we see, hear, and feel into a congent narrative of our minute by minute experience. When that dialogue is damaged, hindered, corrupted, or injured, we end up with psychosis, spiraling down into madness.

Words like “Nazi” and “racist” are used so frequently by these people that the words have almost completely lost their intended meaning, doing a disservice to any past victims of these designations who suffered under those types of authoritarians. The irony in these claims lies in the fact that Leftists formed the Nazi Party as well as the KKK. Now they sit on their thrones of virtue and use their past sins as “insults” to hurl against those who don’t tow their cancerous line.
