Reminds me of when i kept up with a 911 in the Twisties in my uncle's Felicia pickup with 1/5 the power tops and 0 regard for my safety. When it was kinda straight he'd pull away, but at every slow corner I'd be right back on him. The way back down wasn't as fun because i was stuck behind a guy who never went above my engine brake speed in second gear. I discovered the car had a 5th gear before that tho while going 140 km/h.
@johnhunter7244 Жыл бұрын
@@GTAmaniac1 was it safe to be pushing the limits of your vehicle? The 911 driver was almost certainly safer than you. More grip available and sing less of it and more time available to react on the turns. It's not all about the straight or corner speed.
@GTAmaniac1 Жыл бұрын
@@johnhunter7244 @John Hunter the car i was driving had no functional seatbelts, ofc the 911 was being more safe, but i doubt he had more grip available due to my car being half the weight and still being on some sticky tires. Plus we had the same time available to react on the turns, i was never more than half a car width in the opposing lane without knowing with absolute certainty what's in the next 2 corners. Could i have been safer? Definitely, but that's not the point of spirited driving, the point is having fun while still being able to account for most unforseen situations, which i was doing. Plus i was under the speed limit most of the time because 60 hp ain't much.

Normal ones, not even the ST variant. Now I am not saying to start off with a Peel P50, but something reasonably quick. Not a few hundred horsepower monster that will wrench your head off first chance it gets, but a responsive car more likely to train its driver. GT86 is the one I am personally dreaming about, but that is up to the individual. This also applies to any other kind of car. See if you like it stock, and improve it from there. This is a great video. It is universally applicable. During the lockdown I stared getting into, of all things, sewing. I had a $70 entry entry level machine which worked fine for making masks. Then I tried making a denim equipment bag. It was like showing up to a tractor pull with an base model Kia Rio. The machine was trashed halfway through the project. I was THIS close to pulling the trigger on an $1800 machine from Japan. The things it could do! Wow! Then I thought to myself... after we are allowed out of our houses again, am I really going to continue this hobby? Ended up getting a $350 Singer Heavy Duty to get the job done. It is still more machine than I will ever need. The thing goes through denim as if it were tissue paper. Sure enough, since the lockdown ended I make about 3 or 4 bags a year and made one set of custom seat covers. I still need the machine, but I'm so glad I didn't trick myself into that $1800 import.

@suprtroopr1028 Жыл бұрын
And those are key points: experience, satisfaction, and an overall respect for your vehicle. Learning to enjoy, respect, and wrench on something affordable only makes you more competent and grateful when you have a car that has a bigger tag, IF you want one. But it's your call, and that's the real point. The point of being a car guy to me is that your car is YOUR car. You're passionate about what you drive and are willing to invest deeply into it, no matter what make, model, year, or trim. I miss to death my old Park Ave, and would've given anything to have the money, knowledge, and time to fix her back then. And having that thought was when I knew. Now, I'm getting into wrenching on my new store dasher, and it's never been more enjoyable for me to drive her, because it's my effort that's making her better.

Either the pedals are too close or the steering wheel is too far away both at the same time no matter how you adjust the seat. It has no power anything, a carburetor, no computerized components, and can randomly implode at any moment with no warning. The rubber hoses are crumbling, and the window crank handles fall off. My son-in-law asked me what I wanted a sports car for and it wasn't a rhetorical question. He asked "Do you want to brag to your friends about what you own and how much you spent? Do you just want to have the biggest power & torque figures and lowest 0 to 60 numbers available? They'll be outdated next year if so! Do you just want to look cool and feel envied by people you pass the street? Or do you REALLY just want to have insane amounts of fun and LYAO while driving?" The answer was obvious to me - I wanted the most fun I could have in a reliable and relatively inexpensive car. He suggested I buy a Mazda MX-5. I did and have ZERO regrets! Perhaps it's all about maturity - placing reality over image and ego?

I guess this depends on where you are... The MX-5 is a MEH deal in the U.S at best. Unless you are making a track car, it's likely more of a niche purchase at the price. I’m constantly telling people they should only upgrade when their skills outmatch their tools otherwise they’ll get overwhelmed and drop it. It kills me that you see that everyone thinks they need the best that’s out there to start off well when they won’t see any return on investment over a beginners tool for like a year or more, and the fact that these venerable people are being prayed on by salesmen and companies makes me really sad and angry.

I used to be a spec sheet nerd by like a few months when i started into cars. But then a quite distant trip on a small daihatsu changed my opinion. Yes It only has less than a 100hp (googled it, it has 54.5hp) and it shakes like crazy when it reaches 80km/h and above but its really fun to just push that small car to highway standards. After that trip i started to appreciate low hp, but fun cars and other sectors like vans and kei trucks

I think a sports car is defined by having at least decent power or p/w ratio for its time. Even a base 986 Boxster with "only" 200 hp is still a sports car to me because it's already 25 years old and was surprisingly fast when it came out. But calling something with 100 hp a sports car if it doesn't have Lotus Elise weight, it's difficult to call it that.

Spec sheet nerds are annoying as hell, but what's more annoying (more along the lines of racing) is people saying "Oh, you don't need ABS, just threshold brake" or "You don't need TC or stability control, just have good throttle management". YOU'RE NOT A COMPUTER! Even the best racing drivers still lock up tires on heavy braking and spin out due to wheelspin at low speeds. These are vital safety features on modern vehicles because they perform way better than you physically can, so USE THEM.

When I got my RX-8 my mom and many of my friends told me I should have waited till I graduated from engineering school and get my dream car. I’m glad I got it I have so much fun driving, I know what I want to do to it because I’ve started auto crossing and it’s a blast. It only makes 270 horsepower and 180 lbft of torque so it’s not super fast compared to some of my friends cars but it’s so much more fun to drive and don’t get me started on how much fun it is to work on

I remember me and my dad had a talk about something similar to Future Proofing. Basically I told him which cars I'd like to own one day for fun drives. And when I said that I'm still picking which one I'll have, he said to me: "If you really want a car, then save money for it. But at the same time, buy something cheaper but good so you can still have some fun while you save for the car you really want. And once you know you'll have enough, you can sell the car you currently have and get the car you really want." He even told me that despite how much he likes his Super Seven, he's gonna sell it at some point for something else to have fun with. And I took this advice to heart because now that I think of it, it'll be better for me to get a cheap toy and have fun while I save for the actual toy I want, rather than save for the actual toy I want without having anything else to entertain me.

You hit bullseye with your point why slower cars are really fun to drive. As a person who's grown up with two stroke Saab's I couldn't agree more. As my dad always says, back in my day you had lots of fun in a 96 v4 with 90hp. And today I think a 9-3 aero (210hp) is slow with a trailer hooked up. The absolutely brilliant thing about these old Saabs is that they are so light and have great handling. They sound fantastic and you have to push them all the time. The sense of speed is also much greater, so you can have a nice drive without risking your license. In my 9-5 aero with 310hp shit breaks and it's hard to diagnose, so it's never running great just ok or not at all. And I always end up going twice the limit everywhere and get paranoid about every car behind me being a undercover cop. Thus making it stressfull to drive. It's two completely different experiences, but the one with a 140km/h top speed might just be the better experience.

I have a 911 gts, and when I go on vacation, I rent a more fun car like an mx-5. Honestly if I could do it over, I’d rather own one of those than the Porsche. The 911 is more fun on the track, but it’s so expensive to burn through brakes/tires and for servicing that it’s just not really worth it.

To me, being a car enthusiast means you put the time and effort into learning about cars, how to work on them, the different feeling of each car etc. Also, I had a '84 Honda Magna and friends always told me "buy a new sport bike, buy a harley blah blah blah", I got my bike from the original owner for $1800 and it had 7000 original miles. That bike was extremely fun to ride, shifting gears in traffic and feeling the wind beat my chest when I was on the highway.

How to describe my 2015 Fiat 500 Abarth purchased in 2020: - Performance model, 135 HP normal mode, 160 HP sport mode. - Was purchased for fun during the pandemic, has now become my daily driver. - Cheap to buy, paid off in 2½ years at 6.39%. - Cheap to maintain and mod. You can do most jobs yourself! - Surprisingly reliable. Worst problem was a coolant leak fixed with new hose clamps. - Lots of oomph especially in sport mode. - Stock exhaust engineered without a muffler. Sounds nuts! - Can go through all five *manual* gears at legal speed limits with room to spare. - Can take corners frighteningly fast! - Great grocery getter! Put the big stuff in the back seat! They won't fall over! This IS my dream car! I got exactly what I wanted!

The second one really speaks to me lol. I drive a ‘98 Pontiac Sunfire and it’s got the original 2.2L 4 cylinder engine.
