AD Army- It was the middle of February in Upstate NY during a 2 week field training exercise and I was a mechanic supporting field artillery. After waiting out blizzard conditions, had a humvee shear through its rear half shaft bolts and had to drop said half shaft so it wouldn’t damage anything else. My contact truck didn’t come with any needle nose pliers needed to remove the safety clip on the brake cable that blocked the shaft from dropping, so I had to rely on my Supertool 300 while laying in 3AM mud, snow, and rain. The Army wouldn't fund them for us, but knowing what a great asset the tool would be for us... just naturally it was a must to buy one. Skip forward 30 years later... still have my Supertool, as well as about five other models. Oh yeh... I broke the file on my Supertool about 2005. I wrote a letter to leatherman. Service Plumber here, I've owned several waves for about 15 years and have been using the free p4 for about a year and 1/2. I interchange between them both but never go without on my person. I literally pull out my leatherman on EVERY single job I go to. I use it for EVERYTHING. Often times I'll arrive on the job, assess the problem, and resolve it without having to go to my truck for another tool. I have abused the holy crap out of everyone I've owned and only had one break. I had it for 10 years and so I'm hesitant to send it in for replacement as it is a sentimental piece for me. I also have owned a wingman and used it heavily until I lost it on a job. I've also owned a rebar which was not really used by me as I didn't have much use for anything I can't open with one hand. So I gifted the rebar to a cousin years ago. LOVE the wave. It is seriously the best. But I LOVE the p4 for it's satisfying feel and one hand operation. Most of the time my hands are full and I just need something to pry with or hammer with or cut with or torque with on a moment's notice. Being able to reach into my pocket witg one hand and get whatever I need is a lifesaver

I work in the wind energy industry and it requires a lot of different hard use tools. Cured fiberglass infused with resin and hardener is the fastest way I’ve ever tested the capacity (or failure) of knife steels and overall design. Two things I have every day and have had in my pocket there for 6 years: a Kershaw that’s tipless, (I think it’s just basic steel, but it’s about seven years old so I don’t even know what kind of Kershaw it is) scratched up, sanded down and has a measurable amount of dust inside the handle- and a Skeletool. The 420 HC holds up incredibly well, And because the knife is built into the body of a multi tool it’s a lot harder to bend or abuse then I had ever thought. I’ve used the pliers to rip, bend, pull, break. I’ve used the blade to pry (yesss because I have to sometimes), to slice, to impale- Sometimes I have to stab the side of a heavy box and torque the knife so I can drag it towards me- I could go on and on. The replaceable bits, everything. I will never be at this job or another job one single day without a knife and a Leatherman in my pocket.
@FostaFunk3 жыл бұрын
The leatherman surge is my most used tool ever, especially when you pair it with the set of bits you can buy for it. I have it on my waist everyday and normally have to use it more than once a day at work. The scissors on that thing are no joke, they can cut through really thick zip ties that are hard to get at with the knife.

Surge is my favorite. It has good pliers, good selection of usable tools and it can actually handle some abuse. I've broken so many leatherman tools over the years but the surge still lives after a couple of years of use. There is a couple of things I wish leatherman would offer. It would be so cool if they had 2 or 3 base models in each size format that you could customize with whatever tool you wanted. The second thing that would be nice was if they made the tools serviceable in a way that you could buy new tools and change them yourself. I don't want to send my tool in for service when something is worn out or breaks, I want to fix it myself.

Having to buy and carry bits for the Wave+ only adds to the cost and to the weight. Moreover, the scissors on the Wave+ are basically useless for anything but for thread snipping.

The only thing is I wish They would upgrade to at least a mid-range steel from 420 HC. Yes I know it is easy to sharpen but it dulls so fast, That's one of the main reasons why I got the charge plus, it has a S30V blade. I wish they would at least upgrade to a mid-range steel on all of their tools to 154 cm or something like that. Then they would be the ultimate king.

Great vlog! I'm from the UK and bought my Leatherman (locking) PST with leather holster in Portland around 1990 while on a rock'n'roll tour. They were hard to find outside the States back then. I've used it for years now and it's still going strong. Great review...might get a PS mini tool but it will certainly outlast me now!

I've had my sidekick for many years. After a while, you can open the pliers with 1 hand only, as you get used to the tool.

Never leave the house without my Free T4. It's honestly made carrying any standalone knife obsolete. It's light, compact, has a deep carry pocket clip, easy one handed use, a file, scissors, solid phillips head screwdriver, and a decent knife. If I know I'm going to be cutting a lot of boxes or shrink-wrapped pallets, then I'll bring my Milwaukee Compact Fastback Box Cutter with replacement dewalt carbide edge razor blades. It's only $9 for the Fastback, and I got a pack of 50 replacement dewalt carbide edge razor blades for about $20. I absolutely love my Fastback, I just wish that I could swap out the scales, but they put permanent locktite on the pivot screw and the amount of metal contacting that screw makes it impossible to heat up the locktite.

Have you tried a wave? The bit driver is soooo much better than the fixed options on the free series. Many people who already had a wave and picked up a free have returned the free because the tools just aren't as good (you can see plenty of reports of this on the comments here) including myself. I'm sure the free is a capable tool in its own right, but it just doesn't stack up to the wave (especially given that the free is more expensive). Worth checking out some time if you have the chance.
@RaySchrantz4 жыл бұрын
@@Cheeseiest1 I have a Surge as well which is just a big Wave, but far too beefy to carry. The bit changer is good, but I've found the fixed options on my Free T4 extremely useful, especially the Philips and small flathead. I've tried my friends Wave and it's much better on weight, but I don't need pliers very often, if ever, and I prefer the ease of one handed deployment of all of the tools on the free series compared to the surge and wave. If I'm going to get a set of pliers, I'd probably get a Free P2

I happen to carry 2 Leatherman Multi-Tools - the original design of the Wave and a Juice C2. I like the small head pliers of the Juice and the variety of tools that the Wave has. Basically having the right tool for the right situation. I appreciate those viewers that have said that they wish Leatherman would bring back the Juice line of Multi-Tools because I agree with them.

Great video. I have to say, I am extremely happy with my skeleton multi tool. I bought it 4 years ago and then lost it outside somewhere. I just found it again lying in the dirt. It had been there for 4 years and through all the elements mother nature could put on it. Snow and freezing temps, rain and mud. After all that I was amazed that when I picked it up it looked like I just got it in the mail. I mean I just washed off the dirt and it looked brand new, not one speck of rust. I have had all sorts of budget multi tools but none compare to Leatherman.

I went with the Surge. I like how beefy it is and how it appears to be very sturdy. I’m a firefighter and we are pretty routinely changing smoke detectors and doing other task that would require a good multi tool. I can’t wait to receive mine.

I do deliveries and I am a full-service moving company and I carry the Leatherman PST. My grandfather carried it also, yes the same one. I use it every single day. I think since it’s so old and pretty much a classic that I am going to retire it. Still has the same leather case in mint condition. Great rundown! I never realized how many leatherman tools I have until I watched this: I carry my wave hiking (I put a small ferro rod on the side of the case meant for the bit extender). Rebar around the house. I got a used, loose sidekick off ebay and sent it to leatherman and it came back good as new. It lives in a slot on my fishing bag and the spring loaded pliers come in handy when holding a fish in one hand. The saw’s also good for clearing branches when wading in creeks. I also keep a squirt in my center console and wingman in my trunk. I used to have a micra until I gifted it to a friend 10+ years ago and he still has it on his keychain

Ok since you wanted to hear a Leatherman story I'll tell you about my fishing story. So the night before I went fishing I was checking my gear, getting it ready loading it getting a lunch around thermos for coffee, the whole nine yards. I go to grab my fishing jacket to set out for the morning and forgot about the spoon with the 3 way hooks in the pocket. I got one of them stuck in my finger. Went to the hospital to get it out, and after some anesthetic's they pushed the hook threw and were going to cut the barb off to remove it. Unfortunately there cutting tool wasn't up to the task, so I butterflied my super tool 300 open and told them to give it a whirl. After sterilizing it with iodine the doctor went to work. In no time at all my finger was hook free. After words I sang leathermans praises and recommended the hospital start carrying Leatherman products. After I left ,well I didn't catch anything fishing. Moral of the story, don't leave home with out your Leatherman.

I daily carry a squirt for a few years now. It is a good tool. The main reason why it is on my key chain. Is it is meant for glasses repair. Sometimes I use the pliers for small chores. The blade I hardly ever use. It is intended as a backup. The scissors spring broke. Replacing it is not a issue in my eyes. It still works. The file has been used on my nails. One time it was used to in a major project for filing a soft steel bar that was crafted into a arm for a baby gate. Intended to keep a small dog downstairs. The down sides is that it has a small amount of rust. I would buy it again.

Slightly more from the collector perspective, I was able to find a cheap used original PST for like 40 bucks. I love to carry it, has everything I'd ever desire. It's small but it wasn't mentioned in the video, Leatherman stamps the month and year the tool was produced on the inside of the handles, and I just love that. Mine is from 98, just celebrated it's 21st birthday last month. I loved the look of the PST so much I also bought a micra from BHQ a few months ago. I personally love having the scissors. Both a) they are handy in an office environment, but b) when someone asks for my knife (which they may be intimidated by) I can instead just hand them the scissors which are a lot more intuitive for someone who may not be around knives regularly.

Sure, you can open the pliers one handed once they are broken in but the free has all of it's tools on the outside and easy to operate one handed.
