Worst leatherman ever, beats the OHT by a mile at that. Tools of the wingman/sidekick, with the price of a charge AL, with a 420hc instead of 154cm blade. If you use TUF GLYDE you can make your wave/charge open and close one handed

This is certainly an in depth review and although I agree that the wave + has advantages over the free p4...I think the free has equal advantages over the wave. I’ve owned a wave plus that unfortunately fell out of my pack on a 3 day hike in the Catskills. Chalked it up as a sad loss. When I got home I figured I’d give the free p4 a shot. I couldn’t be happier with it! The only thing I miss is the etched in ruler on the liners. I don’t miss the bit driver because I always lost the bits anyway and I definitely don’t miss needing to open the handles for the tool access. The free was designed to be and easier more practical multi tool over the wave. I haven’t had and issues regarding the pliers either. The hinge is much looser than the locking tabs that keep the handles from folding over. Mine is comparable to a butterfly knife in function. I have used it just about every day for work for over 6 months and have been happy. I also like the newly designed locking mechanism for the tools over the wave along with the magnetic pull to seat them down. There I days I miss my wave but I certainly don’t regret my purchase of the free. At the end of the day it’s a different tool that suits different needs.

Hi Ben, I’ve viewed many of your videos but have yet to comment. Just wanted to say that the quality of your content is literally second-to-none for a couple reasons: 1. You’re clearly an expert in your profession. The commentary you provide is not just entertaining and informative, but typically educational. I feel I’ve learned a great deal just from viewing your videos. 2. You disseminate your knowledge and expertise in a coherent manner. As a scientist, I fortunately get to interact with experts daily, however, I wish half of them could be as clear in their explanations as you are. Just wanted to acknowledge your fantastic work, looking forward to all future videos on various topics.

From everything I have seen regarding the Free tools, it seems that they rushed to release them. They focused too much on how nice they look and how fun they are to fidget with, but they forgot to test them as tools, and see how the design translates to function. They would have caught a lot of issues users are coming across. The Free P4 is nowhere near the Wave. One-handed access to everything is nice, but it means nothing when the vast majority of tools are so inferior to the Wave's. Sure, we fidget with our multi-tools, but that should not be the main selling point.

As a Millwright I would rather use the Wave. Not that a multi tool is going to be used in the type of work that I do, however when I'm not at work, and want something that could potentially get me out of a jam. The Wave is a better bet. In my opinion. The free p4 is a good looking MT, but I think it's more suited to those who dont use hand tools very often in daily life. It would be good to keep in a road side emergency kit, or a household tool set.
@baszt
@baszt Жыл бұрын
Still, we don't have to forget that is a multitool. You have to remove or to insert a screw? you have a Philips drive and a flat one. You want to cut some wood? you have a saw. You want to open a can or a bottle? you have the tools there and so on. Don't know what you expect from a multitool. Of course you can't go to build a house with it but it does the light job for what it's actually meant. So much fuss about the wave's bit driver and comparisons...

The Free can opener is like a modern Vx version and it is designed to operate in a forward (counter clockwise) direction. You were trying to use in the clockwise direction like the old Leatherman/Wenger style is used. The Vx style opener works well once you get the hang of it and get a rhythm going.

One thing I noticed with my Wave Plus was the cap lifter wasn't good at all. But I realized that I was using the cap lifter with the handles closed (same as you were in the video). If you use the cap lifter with the handles open, then it works great. When you close the handles they get in the way of most bottles... opening the handles just gets them out of the way. :) Great video.

I own both and here's my own breakdown on why the Wave+ is superior: - The Wave has a slightly longer straight blade, serrated blade and saw, with the option of swapping the better S30V blade on the Charge tti - It's more compact in length - Has a functional 8" ruler - Has replaceable bit - Serrated blade is placed on a better side than the one on the P4 - Way better file with diamond coat - Is more moddable - Pocket clip can be placed on either side (you have to remove the hidden lanyard ring) - Option for storing the tweezers (from the Style PS) - Eyeglass screwdriver if you like that feature The only cons I've found on the Wave so far are not one hand operations and inferior scissors. Other than that I personally like it better than the P4.

As a serious MT user and after a couple weeks of use I find In fact you do want to play with it, in fact it is a more pleasant experience, the scissors are better, the file is much more capable than I thought. The screw drivers and package opener are great. The wave is slightly more capable but not really a huge difference for me. The P4 is so pleasant to use and carry it's almost fun.

A year later and I'm still super glad I stuck with my Wave. I think the magnet idea is fun, bit not durable. Time will tell, but I know my Wave has years of experience and I've had zero issues. Heck, my PSTii is just about 25 years old and has had zero issues! (It rides in my tacklebox now since I got my Wage years ago.) It's a few ounces heavier than my Skeletool (5 oz. compared to 8.5 oz) in my pocket....so the Wave is in a belt sheath with a bit kit and extender. I tend to throw the Wave/Sheath combo in my bag, briefcase, or glovebox or saddlebag. Not a wave +, just a plain old Wave...skill going strong. I think the Free series will fade.

I work in dirt doing gas main. I use my charge Tti a lot more than most and it’s abused. There is a lot of modified around me I can tell you the magnets in the free series pick up every single piece of small metal dust which sucks. It’s hard enough cleaning the tool up without the magnets holding metal dust. My charge stays on my belt and has rust spots from working in the rain. My p4 rusted faster and more working in the rain. Most users would cry if they saw how dirty and abused my tool is....

So I finally pulled the trigger and bought a Free P4. After using the T4 for years, I got its big brother and looking at the tools you can notice a slight difference between what was on the T4 when it was released and the P4 now. The awl tip became finer and the scissors river tighter, but the can opener is dull, which likely was the case in this video. Overall I don’t know why Leatherman compared the Free P4 to the Wave + when I think the wave, charge, and surge fit more of a tradesman purposes whereas the Free series fits the casual user.

I bought the Wave in 2020. Since then, I have beat the living daylights out of it. Still works like a charm. I never go anywhere without it and don't feel complete apart from it. Save the holster or sheath or whatever it's called, the pocket clip works fine for me and keeps my money clip in my pocket from shifting around. Leatherman makes quality products that pretty much last a lifetime. The Waves hidden feature in the form of a lanyard keeps my spare keys out of my pocket thus freeing up space and giving me piece of mind.

So I've just purchased the Rev last week and I purchased it for all the reasons that you find fault in. I have a few Super Tools that I've owned for decades and the idea of a much smaller tool at a $25 price point was very appealing. I like the clip and find that it works best in my left pocket because the slim side flows with my pocket and doesn't create a bulge. I've never liked the spring loaded pliers and find they are more burdensome than useful especially when I lay them down. I want them to stay there, not to spring open. The last item is the package opener; I just used it all afternoon for cutting weather sealing tape. You hook it on the tape and being as sharp as it is, cuts it clean and smooth. Without closing it I can clip it on my pocket and not have a very sharp, pointed knife out. It also works well with twine and hay bales. I have used it on the pesky plastic container packages and it works well as designed. I do find the clip a touch loose but not a bother and I do have to question the blade hole. All in all I find that it is a fine tool and exactly what I was looking for. I've never found a good reason to have the saw and I don't want scissors on my multi-tool. Nice review, I just find it a bit off the mark.

I know this review was done a couple years ago but I thought I'd put my 2 cents in. I have both the Free P4 and the Wave (albeit not the Plus). I do agree with you that the Free P4 does have an issue with the handles popping loose when opening after applying load on the pliers. However I've had mine for a couple years now and that issue does go away when the pliers get used and worn in, but I definitely agree that it is annoying for the first few months of use. Although I do like the Free P4 I always find myself gravitating to the Charge TTi I purchased back in high school. Whether its from sentimental value or because I just prefer it more I can't tell hahaha. I do really wish it had an Awl though, I've been thinking of swapping the flat head driver on my charge to the awl from my rebar but I don't want to start Frankensteining tools together. Anyhow, great video as always, hope you are doing well.

I work as a set dresser/props in a movie industry. I've been using Leatherman and Victorinox for more than 15 years and I always prefer Leatherman. I had and use mostly Wave and Surge. You will appreciate Free P4 only when you hanging up on a step letter and losing your drive bit or need some tool but you have only one hand available. Free series came right on time for me. Surge was perfect for me but too heavy and bulky, wave was in the sweet spot with all the compromises, P4 is exactly what I need. One last thing, if you want to get the job done in a proper way- get the dedicated tool. Leatherman and all the rest of the multitools are made for emergencies and light work which doesn't require special skills or tools.

Looks like my Wave is good for another generation! Glad to hear that, I thought i was missing out! Now I plan to have them bury me with it strapped to my waist! It appears to me that it's not that the P4 is a bad tool but that the Wave is a better tool & hard act to follow. Perhaps they decided to cut things down a bit to get a more modular appearance and single handed access for the sub tool set of the P4. I've loved my Wave forever. I bought the first generation that didn't have the locking tool set option. I gave that to my son years ago and he still has it among his stuff. It's in great condition and the tool was bought in 1998!

I have a similar tightening plier issue with my surge and rebar. As I squeeze hard on the pliers they become sticky. But since their handle tension is good they won’t bent upon reopening. I can loosen the plier again by twisting the handles. I guess there’s a design problem or QC problem with plier heads. My wave doesn’t have the same problem.

It’s the most proven platform which is why they’ve built the reputation that they have, and have created the upgraded charge series based on the same tool set. The Supertool 300 is also an incredible option as is the surge. But they’re heavy and the ST300 stays in my truck. The wave rides in my pocket daily. I have a few waves now, mainly to cycle out when I inevitably damage one from pushing it’s uses and have to send it back for a quick repair. I recently sent one in and had it back to me in less than 2 weeks. With service like that-I didn’t mind buying several to guarantee I’m never without one.

Hello there TX Tool Crib. I think you did a very good review on the two tools. I will say that new one P4, probably was up talked lol. (Marketing And all that) I’m a Generation 2 wave carrier (since 2003 or in the first or second year it came out. I have the locking backs), and I have to agree with you in the sense of practicality. The multi Head replacement with the bit extender I have will beat that “up class Multi tool” for 90% of the jobs I do. And if I don’t have my bit extender Plus extra bits, maybe 75% of the time my Wave will get it done. I do think all the hype was about the fact that out of the box it can do an one hand open. Which isn’t really Noteworthy. Unless you’re one of those New kids on the block. Meanwhile anybody with the wave who has broken it in could One hand open it as well. I don’t see myself “upgrading” to this any time soon. Even after breaking generation 1 and 2 once each. (I broke my generation one prying something open and I accidentally welded my generation two pliers together working on a car.) Just in case anybody is interested in what I do, I do landscaping (trees, dirt, concrete, Grass, stonework, Stones, maintenance on the machines and more. Along with working a part-time job at the Home Depot.) The Leatherman wave (generation two) Will stay by my side for years to come. Thank you for your honest review!

I was just watching old videos, just to pass the time and it occurred to me, the Wave Clones provide U shaped shims with the wire cutters. Do you think the cutters are creating way to much drag, when they are pressed hard to close? If so, a very thin bronze washer or a few should create enough gap to eliminate that drag. I don't know if anyone will see this comment on a old video, but I figured it might help someone fix they're multitool. I was watching when you were moving the pliers out slowly and it broke free, once the cutters weren't touching. Basically it's creating a lock jaw. Removing the cutters should definitely point that flaw out, if it is the cutters. I don't know if anyone tried any of this.

The plier handle break over issue can be solved "temporarily". Just fold P4 then you can see Two of "T" shaped Long nose plier ankle area. Grab P4 and hit the T shaped area hard on the wood or something. Then it can help releasing stuck plier to original position. But if you use it again, it will stuck again. So this is big issue for sure.

One thing you didn’t touch on is the pocket clips. The wave is the clear winner in my book as it offers deep ride and a black coated option. I much prefer a low profile, less noticeable carry for office and formal occasions, and the P4 doesn’t offer that. Granted you could paint the P4 clip but the top of the tool would still stick out, plus paint doesn’t hold up long.

I love my Free P4. For my line of work it's one-,handed easy to access tooling has worked out great for me. But I don't have Wave+ to compare it too. I own 5 other mult-tools and the Free P4 is my new EDC.

There is no doubt that the one-handed accessibility is a huge selling point for some. I just wished they hadn’t sacrificed the level of tool quality we have come to expect from Leatherman’s higher end models.

Considering both are 140, I would take my Charge+ over the P4 any day of the week. Form over function in some cases. For me the major selling points are the bit driver, and that sweet 154CM blade steel. I have a habit of flipping it out balisong style lately glad to see that at the end of the video lmao

Great video, I enjoyed and learned something new. I have carried a version of the Leatherman since 1990 and the wave is by far my favorite. Too bad Leatherman doesn't sell a wave/surge/rebar frame and one can add tools as they want them. If the can opener on the rebar is better than the wave just add it, if the serrated blade on the Free is great just add it. A fully customizable Leatherman and the user just chooses the options. Just my two cents.

I have an XE6 and I like it, almost perfect for my daily routine, camping, fishing, little works at home, food prep ( cooking is a man stuff in my country and with a longer blade it should be better)....I'm sorry they discontinue their products so quickly, maybe they should be more patient and give the people understand that a product is good. In my opinion the best marketing is to make good products, don't you think so?.

Thank you sir. I have all of the second generation Juice series. I think they are great EDC multi tools, with one exception. Because they are on the smaller side, I would prefer that they would be spring loaded. I find it a bit cumbersome working with the pliers. I would also prefer to have seen a pocket clip on the smaller S2. It is a shame they are discontinuing them, hopefully they have plans to replace them with something better. I absolutely agree with your last statement. Make good products, and they will sell themselves.

That’s an interesting question. My three top choices would be the Surge, SwissTool, and SuperTool 300. I also think the Crunch could be very valuable in certain situations as well. I think for maintenance, you’ll want to lean towards the more robust models. If you haven’t used a multi tool on the job before now, they will save you multiple trips back to the toolbox for those small jobs.

I have been using my free P4 as a daily driver for 3 weeks now. I have to say I really like the easy access of the tools on the outside of the device. I think that's truley innovative. I think with a few design tweaks from user feedback the P42 could be a solid device. They have to figure out how to get that bit exchanger in there on the next version. That opens up space for the rebar package opener a great awl. I don't know how they are going to fix the file issue. They took that slot and added the sissors which are really nice. Directionally insiring, but they missed the mark just a little bit.

I too hope that user feedback as well as reviews will help point Leatherman in the right direction to fix the issues on the new designs. Great, honest, in-depth comparison. Thanks for posting. For me, im able to deploy most of the tools on my Surge one-handed (including the pliers). That being said, im hoping to try one soon to judge for myself

@watchncarry9593

@@txtoolcrib true. I think the biggest compromise was what you had mentioned in the video: the bit exchanger. In an ideal world, it would be great to have a multi-tool that has fully-modular/interchangeable parts. But that's unlikely, and not cost-efficient I would assume from a business-model point of view. But having some modular parts like the bit exchanger really opens up the capability and flexibility of a Leatherman. Hopefully reviews and comments from the community will have some influence on their R&D in future designs.

Totally agree and reached the same conclusion. I have the original Wave and the Surge that are both in need of some warranty work and those have been my EDC at work. Also have a Juice S2 and Skeletool which were my EDC when not at work, the Skeletool being the primary in that role. Looking for something to fill the work role while warranty work is being done and was considering the Free P4 until I actually looked at the toolset within, and am now leaning more toward the Charge TTI. Overall better toolset and better blade steel at a close price point to the P4.

TX Tool Crib it’s hard to beat the ROI on the Wave....even the 1st gen original Wave I had. It’s difficult to improve on that toolset and quality at that pricepoint. On mine, one needlenose tip broke off early on and had to be corrected with a belt sander, and the pivot joint has become very loose and worn over time. The serrated blade stop broke off, allowing the blade to hyperextend during use. I contacted Leatherman in 2012 about a warranty claim, and then promptly bought a Surge and just threw the Wave in a drawer without sending it for repair. The return spring on the scissors failed a couple of years ago on the Surge and I’ve ignored it. Sent them an email today to get both of them sent in for repair. We’ll see how this goes.
