If you do not want to keep the leftover solution used for the acid wash, then you need to truly neutralize it before dumping it down your drain. You first need to sprinkle baking soda in it and stir. The solution should begin to bubble and this is good because it is chemically neutralizing the acid instead of just diluting it like when you rinse. Keep sprinkling the baking soda until it stops bubbling And then pour it down the drain with some running water for a couple minutes. Doing this is standard procedure in a lab and will protect the pipes in your home from damage.

If you want to get a copper or brass finish on your blade/hardware, after removing it form the ferric chloride and washing it, scrap it with either a piece of copper wire or a brass bristled brush (they use them in gold a lot) and it will transfer the copper/brass over to it and will retain fairly well, and then you can still throw it in the stones if you want the stonewash look.

Wait, I use my knives all for food prep, not just regular EDC of processing cardboard, loose strands from your articles of clothing, etc. After washing the ferric chloride off, would, my knife still be food-safe? (I am aware this could be a stupid question, but I, also, understand that certain chemicals linger on materials regardless of how well you wash them). If anyone has any insight on this I'd greatly appreciate your thoughts. Perhaps upvote this comment if you're wanting to know this, too. Feel it'll help a lot of people.

The oxide layer in your blade is food safe, it is just "controlled" rusting of the steel itself. The etching solution needs to be completely neutralized before it can be deemed food safe, water might not bee enough to completely neutralize it. Windex (or any other window cleaners with ammonia should do the trick) or you can mix in baking soda in your rinsing water (do it until the baking soda starts to not dissolve in the water). Hope this helps you! Happy customization!
