I have gardened for 50 years and totally agree with you about the weed matting/ fabric. It is worse than worthless. I worked in one public garden where there were 7 layers, with decayed mulch between them, and the garden was still full of weeds. It was such a chore to pull it all up! Cardboard is a much better alternative, since it simply decays over time. It is the mulch that controls weed growth, not the matting! I also love that you water the holes first before planting, too. So many landscapers skip that step, and then the plants don't survive! It is even more important in dry areas or periods of drought, to water the hole, so the water goes down deep and does not evaporate like top watering does!
@BlondiNativeAme3 Жыл бұрын
I agree with your comment. I used weed cloth to control weeds and... they still grew through it. Not worth the money. 😊

For future reference when using cardboard as a weed block, if you wet the cardboard down before adding your mulch, the cardboard stays in place and the mulch sticks to it and doesn't slide off. And if you have enough cardboard, using three layers of it also makes for a longer lasting weed barrier.

I know those vines all too well: ah, morning glory, how I (don't!) miss your insidious propagation and caustic, reeking sap Well and satisfyingly done as ever, both of you. Pity about taking out the geraniums, but if their successors are easier for the client to keep up with, that's what matters.
