Laguna also makes a nice lathe. They have entry level units like the 16-43 and 18-47 ($1k and $2k), all the way up to their massive and monstrous Pinnacle, which is a 1500lb, 48" swing, 52" between centers, 3hp 220V beast that retails for about $10k. But it's built like a tank and big enough to turn most anything.

It's a One-Way 2436 (24" swing, 36" between centers) Robust also makes a very nice lathe. But, both of these brands are pricey! If your budget isn't large enough for either of those, JET makes some nice machines, and Grizzly imports some nice pieces, especially for the price. There are some nice bowl lathes available as well, such as those from Vega, or if you want to go all-out, the VB36. There are others as well, just do a Google search for "bowl lathe" or similar terms.

awesome! great drum! i just hauled a huge log up to my house today and plan on making a drum out of it. i was going to start shaping it with a chainsaw then switch to a lathe. im buying a shopmaster (really old one!) and i was going to modify it to turn large (16-20") diameter outboard. have you ever seen a steady rest that sits on the floor? im thinking i may need something like that.

Music if you can call it that. I came to watch wood turning not listen to a noise.
