I find it hilarious that the domain / website of oneofakind talks about the importance of "virtual real estate", or domain names. And yours is oneofakind2 . That's great and hilarious (in a good way, not at all saying hilarious in a bad way). Kind of takes the wind out of their sails pitch (pun intended).

Good video. Big piece of poplar! I like that you only turn local woods; same with me--only local, and salvaged from construction projects, blowdowns, or arborist crews. Treecycling.

I really miss turning bowls, I have a friend who taught me how to turn bowls. I made a bunch out of Norfolk pine, and coconut. Right when I was getting the hang of it and making pretty thin transparent bowls I took a break and haven't done anything since.

It's because the woods density isn't consistent throughout the whole piece. There are areas in the wood that are denser than others thus getting the whole thing out of balance.

if you turn it down to a thickness roughly 1" thick for every 12" in diameter first, let it dry for a while and then re-turn it, they won't crack or split.

@angusMCjamison Another option is to use a coring system to make 3 bowls from this blank, instead of just one. If the wood is rare, expensive or hard to get, coring makes good sense, and if you sell the bowls, it will easily pay for itself.

First, what is your actual budget? And how large of pieces do you plan to turn? You don't need a monster lathe to turn an 18" bowl. The big Grizzly (G0694) is overkill unless you're planning truly massive pieces (26"+). . A smaller and less expensive lathe to consider is the Nova 1624-44 with out-board turning attachment. The Nova DVR-XP and Nova 2024 are also excellent options, especially the 2024 with outboard attachment. The Grizzly G0733 is a good option, and plenty lathe for a novice.

Very nice, and well documented, at least this part of the process, but I have probably the stupidest question around - why not turn a dry log? If you machine wood green, it can deform or even crack while drying, can't it?

Hi.. I usually work with stone and have got a lot of stone turned on lathe to create various forms. While working with stone on turning lathe, we need to constantly use water to soften the edge. Now, I'm trying to experiment with stone and wood together, sticking blocks of stone and wood with resin based adhesives. I'm concerned about the wood getting wet while working on the stone part. Do you think it will be all right if the wood gets wet, or it cannot?

@ernstbecker1 if you are using a bowl gouge or spindle gouge try turning the tool to where your tool is at more of a angle toward the bevel more. and cut with the point of the tool. Ralph

I will wrap my bowl in a brown paper bag, turn it upside down on a shelf, and wait till the moisture meter reads between 8% and 12%. Sorry I couldn't be more specific, but the time varys depending on the kind of wood, and how green it is to start with..Thanks!

@wbro8316 Looks like he's turning on a powermatic 4224, same as JET 4224 for you downunder. Same capacity as Vicmarc300. Over 900 lbs. VB's are lighter, and don't even have a tailstock unless you spend close to 10K, and sure seem less user friendly for everything but extremely large projects. They're smooth because you bolt them to the floor. I'm betting this lathe is unbalanced. Sharper tools would help. Gripping a tenon rather than expanding would be a lot safer as well, IMHO.

I tried to turn my " first bowl " yesterday. It's a small one. I gave it a rest after having difficulty turning the interior the bowl's center. Since I'm new at this I wasn't able to relieve all the center of mass. A small "nub" remains. Do you have any suggestions on removing the bowl's interior center?

Did nobody complain about the glove?, I think people who argue about gloves and lathes don't really know what they're talking about, specially on a wood lathe your rest hand would get a beating after turning one or two pieces if you didn't have a glove, I've got small scars to prove this. You can't avoid it, the chips are ejected at very high speeds and sooner or later one is bound to injure your skin. It also acts as a buffer for the tool, dampening vibrations.

What Lathe are you using, my dad and I are considering purchasing a 23" Grizzly with outboard spindles. We are both novices, but He and I are sick of the flimsy 12" pipe lathes we use now. I know some folk speak ill of grizzly tools, but it's within our price range for a tool of that size. We would like to know of other brands that make large format lathes as well.

I'd also like to state that if you are novices, you will need to gain plenty of skill before you should even consider anything over 16-18" in diameter. Big wood has a lot of mass and inertia when spinning 300-500rpm, and it can hurt you badly if you make even one mistake. Remember, the bigger the wood, the more dangerous it becomes. I've shattered gouge handles from catches on 20"+ pieces. This can easily break arms and wrists. Be careful and work within your skill set.

@Febeleh Any kind of jewelry is a liability when you are using power tools of any kind as I had the same concerns when seeing the watch and bracelet the turner was wearing. A classmate in my high school shop class had two fingers ripped off at an old Oliver lathe when his sleeve got snagged and his first reaction was to brace himself. The pinch point at the tool rest and workpiece does nasty damage. That image was burned into my brain but it keeps me from being complacent when working.

I see. Amateur would be a better term. Novice is like being called a newbie, and that you are not. (you've been turning damn near as long as I've been alive! I'm 31) Look at the Rikon Woodfast (the bigger model), the Nova's, and even the larger JET's. My only concern with Grizzly is parts availability and customer service down the road. I know they change models often, and as they basically put their name on foreign made machinery, there's no telling how long parts will be available.
