I find Blakes playing so fascinating. Just the piecing of parts together. It's never predictable. I learned "Obfuscation" years ago. I literally had to learn it 30 seconds at a time, and it took 12 takes to get it right from beginning to end. How he does it, I have no clue.

A lot of it comes down to phrasing and how the guitar interacts and plays back and forth with the drums. Still, its taken me months just to figure most of it out so, props to ya!

I'm not a drummer so tell me if I'm wrong, but to my ear sometimes he'll give a little taste of the next sequence during the fill before it so it ties together to disparate riffs rhythmically rather well. Am I way off? When I used to (attempt to) play their stuff on bass that was kinda how I got the feel of the very strange transitions

8:59 is repeatable about 172 times in a row. The second half of Fossil is probably the softest BTBAM song there is but dude it just wraps up so nicely, and has always had a nice "end of the album" feel to it. TGM is a wonderful album.

Has anyone else noticed how far back he holds his sticks? With the way he plays, he could hold his sticks however he wants for all I care. He's still a monster.
@TheCarribeanCat4 жыл бұрын
That's good technique! He's giving his fingers more leverage so that he can use his wrist and arm less, which is better for both speed and stamina and is alao more sustainable for your joints long-term.
@BoogieWoogieCat Жыл бұрын
@@TheCarribeanCat That has nothing to do with good technique. Mike Mangini has excellent technique and holds his sticks much higher than Blake. Other drummers do it too. Every stick is different and so is the balance point in them. Blake also said he prefers longer sticks, which is why he's using the freestyle models now, so it makes sense he'd hold these shorter sticks further back to increase reach.

I saw them live two days ago and they opened the set with this song. I guess he just got the chance to record the video while rehearsing for the tour ;-)
@Eagles.Fan.Since.Super.Bowl.527 жыл бұрын
Cyclone b Since he wrote the songs I guarantee it's not a question of memory like it would be for a drummer trying to cover the song. Let's face it, who would forget a song they wrote?
@cycloneb26337 жыл бұрын
i know for a fact many musicians do all the time, for even much simpler songs
@Eagles.Fan.Since.Super.Bowl.527 жыл бұрын
Cyclone b Of course they go back to play them to get timing down. I'm simply saying they don't sit at a drum set and say to themselves "hmm, what part comes next?" You are thinking as a fan who wants to cover the song. You don't have the muscle memory that the person who wrote the song has.
@christopheraustin11736 жыл бұрын
Professional musicians, haha. I remember, a few tours back, Paul said he had to go back to Self-Titled and Silent Circus and re-write parts because he doesn't remember how they go, and the mix was so bad he couldn't make out most of the guitar parts. When you write so much music, you have to teach yourself your own songs if you plan to play them live.

Could he not have done the light snare rolls at around 10:00? I know it's an overdub, but it seems like he could fit it in aside from the double crash hits spaced throughout. Just looking for a player's opinion, not criticizing.
