The series ending of ALL series endings. The finale of finales. We finally get to see what a uniquely dark series Blakes 7 is. I read in a Horizon magazine about 25 years ago, someone commented that the series ended in the only way it could. The reasoning was: How long could a handful of criminals realistically survive against fully-equipped totalitarian power? Point taken. Eventually, the attention they've drawn to themselves could only lead to one outcome. A pity Orac didn't trace _that_ path through infinity. It's not like Star Wars, where we have good guys fighting under the direction of an established government of the free world against bad guys lead by another government - a dictatorship known as the Empire. After which, we have an award ceremony for the heroes of the battle against the Death Star. No. Blakes 7 was described as the Dirty Dozen in Space - A band of criminals fighting a dictatorship. No equipment or weapons except what they can salvage. No information except what they could extract using their own resources - including Orac -, or from other rebels. No congratulatory award ceremony for the victors of each major battle. No records of exemplary service. No medals, no accolades, no promotions to higher ranks, and no service pensions. Also, no rules of war or codes of conduct to be subjected to, against any enemy similarly unimpeded by rules or morality. It's gloves off all the way. It's just one long drawn out struggle to survive on an inter-galactic scale. As distressing as the outcome is, Blakes 7 is probably as real as it gets. We know because it hurts. Like the feeling of long-time friends or loved-ones taken from us in a heartbeat. A terrible waste. The good guys are not always the victors. That's why Blakes 7 truly stands out as a class of it's own, and a part of why a lot of us really like it. BL. P.S Over the last 10 years, it's been suggested more than twice on the Blakes 7 Facebook fanpage - once by myself - that it was Blake's clone from Weapon who was killed off in the final episode! That topic often makes for interesting yes/no discussions! P.P.S If this hasn't been mentioned, the lady officer that Avon killed was played by Paul Darrow's wife. Paul insisted that Avon should be the one who shoots her on screen! Also, in the final clip before the credits, the theory is that Avon was aiming his gun at Servalan.

The BBC's phone-lines rang off the hook for hours. The producer travelled to the US to tell Terry Nation how he was going to end it. Terry didn't like the idea, although he liked Avon standing over Blake as though to protect him. Gareth Thomas agreed to come back for one more episode on the condition that Blake was dead, dead, deady-dead dead. When it came to filming his murder he kept asking the effects team for more blood. When the blood squib exploded, everyone in the studio gallery gasped in shock. TV shows are often defined by their ending, and Blake's 7 certainly is.

Do you know what is even more gut-wrenching fact about this ending? It was planned that Avon & Co would either be stunned or killed, depending if the actors decided to return for a supposed fifth series. Sadly that fifth series wasn't commissioned and their fates are left unknown. But Christ! What a capper - the final shot of Avon breaking the "Mexican standoff" and the gunshots ringing out. When I saw it, I was speechless, and I'm glad that Blake's 7 didn't end in a predictable scenario in which all the heroes survive and the Federation is finally destroyed. Yeah, it's a bittersweet ending, but I'll give the production team kudos for being able to pull it off - personally for me, 'Blake' is a masterpiece, and perhaps the one of the best series finales of all time. Fun fact: Michael Keating (Vila) compared the ending to Shakespeare's Hamlet, where everyone dies. To you, Shelma, well done for getting through it.

It was all for nothing😭

*_Orac would have been found sooner or later._* It's possible that Orac would be found, but GP is a frontier world far from the heart of the Federation, so it's unlikely any of the rank & file troops there even know what Orac is, let alone what it looks like. So on that front, Orac may have been written off as scrap (especially if Avon kept the key with him; no one on GP would be able to make the connection between "this thing on Avon's body" and "that clear box of gizmos we found in section 5."). So either Orac is sitting in a scrap heap somewhere (sans key), or was melted down to be repurposed. *_Scorpio would have been taken apart for the recovery of both the teleport system and the star drive._* I doubt there was much to salvage on Scorpio. That little glide through the forest probably ripped open the underbelly and likely wrecked the stardrive section. As for the teleport, it's unlikely any salvage operation would know Scorpio had teleport capabilities; the flight deck was totally wrecked in the crash (Tarrant is seen clinging to a mound of soil where the teleport bay once was), so it's extremely doubtful any of it survived. But even if some components had, its doubtful any salvage teams would know what it is; as far we know, only three ships possessed teleport systems: Liberator, her sister, and Scorpio. The only thing that could probably be salvaged would be Slave, since it basically closed down due to a total power loss. But presumably, it's memory is still intact, so the unit could be removed from the wreck and installed on another ship.
@helmethead727 ай бұрын
Not wanting to detract from the wonderful sense of doom and futility here but the Federation had enough smart scientists and engineers who could have reverse-engineered the teleport system and star drive. The Federation was attacking the base as Deva stated before Arlen killed him. They would have had more than enough troops to secure the area around Plantation 5 and report back to Sleer or her superiors. This is when the search for Orac would begin until his ultimate recovery. The Federation, with the aid of the salvaged equipment, would begin upgrading their ships and constructing new ones with the ultimate result of their almost complete domination of all the known star systems and beyond. I say almost, until the new rebellion begins…. The legend of Blake, Avon and their crew of freedom fighters would endure throughout the galaxy and as another inspirational , legendary hero from Sherwood would say: nothing’s forgotten. Nothing is ever forgotten.
@sixstanger007 ай бұрын
@@helmethead72 Hmm... it's plausible, but I'd counter-argue by saying it'd be difficult to reverse-engineer something that barely exists to begin with. If both the stardrive and teleport were completely wrecked in the crash, reverse-engineering would be a royal pain the arse because you wouldn't even know how it was supposed to look whole. Especially given that Scorpio's stardrive was Dr. Plaxton's prototype of one that could be fitted to a large vessel instead of a small space chopper. Dozens of components necessary to make the systems work might be totally destroyed (or in fragments somewhere down the crash path), and without knowing the system NEEDS those components, you'd never be able to get it to work. It would be like trying to reverse engineer a car that was missing it's starter relay. If you don't know it NEEDS one, then you won't know it's MISSING ONE. In autos, the starter relay engages when you press the ignition button (or turn the key). The relay completes an electrical circuit that sends power to the starter. But without the relay, (a part no bigger than a bottle top), the car won't even start. *_would begin upgrading their ships and constructing new ones with the ultimate result of their almost complete domination of all the known star systems and beyond._* Even IF the Federation were to acquire teleport and stardrive tech from Scorpio, it wouldn't be enough to extend their empire beyond the Milky Way galaxy. That little brush with Andromeda between S2 & S3 costs them 80% of their fleet and the destruction of Star One, which plunged the entire empire into chaos. Unless the Federation acquires a large fleet of Liberator-capable ships, I doubt they'd be venturing outside our own galaxy anytime soon.

@thebigboo57 ай бұрын
And there it is. The ending of Blake's 7. It's a tough re-watch. The worst misunderstanding on TV. I think I first saw it about 25 years ago. Well after the original date. I was watching it with my parents, they'd got the VHS tapes. They'd seen it before, when it was originally on TV, but they didn't spoil what was coming next. Boy was I shocked! No other show has really done it I don't think, and it hits hard, and stays with you. That's why it's still around, I guess. A lot of other people are mentioning the same things, but this show always gets me talking, so here I go. SO many people comment on the lack of blood for the crew. Are they dead? The ending was designed to be ambiguous, depending on if a fifth series was commissioned and if actors were going to return. So lots of books and fan fiction have them surviving. Gareth Thomas though, only agreed to come back if his character was dead for certain. He'd been getting a lot of questions over the role and wanted it cleared up and ended for sure, sadly. Chris Boucher decided the shoot out would be the most memorable ending they could do. Although the date of the final episode, 21 December 1981, he said was "unfortunate" and has decribed himself as "the man who killed Father Christmas" in 1981. Orac is still outside, hidden, presumably. Wonder if anyone ever finds him. No Servalan was a surprise. You kind of think she's going to turn up right at the end for the shoot out, but it doesn't happen. Your reactions to these have been awesome, I'm sticking around for more :) I hope you'll enjoy some of the audio books, books, fan fiction, whatever you decide to try. Sorry for rambling! I'll leave you with some of my favourite quotes... Avon: In the end, winning is the only safety. Avon: Have you betrayed us? Have YOU... betrayed... ME? Cally: He who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken. Avon: Regret is part of being alive -- but keep it a small part. Avon: It is not neccessary to become irrational in order to prove that one cares; indeed, it is not neccessary to prove it at all.
@helmethead727 ай бұрын
Here’s the quote that finalises everything so painfully. Deva: All of it useless if you’re not there to lead it. There’s no teddy bear army coming to save the rebels from Emperor Palpatine’s best legion on Gauda Prime. This is why Blake’s 7 is so authentic it hurts.
@sixstanger007 ай бұрын
According to Chris Boucher, the "ending" is indeed that Avon straddles Blake's body and glances down at him, realizing he's made a fatal mistake - Avon attempted to keep a resistance alive but in the end, his own distrust destroys it from the head down (killing Blake). In that moment, Avon raises his gun and chooses to go out in a blaze of glory. Regarding Orac: The last time we see Orac is in the flyer before they enter the silo, so either Orac was left on the flyer or Avon hid it somewhere before going to the main tracking gallery. But Orac or no Orac, the ending to the series is pretty clear: our heroes lose and the Federation now rules totally with an iron fist.
@escapetheratracenow98837 ай бұрын
Well said. Orac is most definitely in the flyer or the silo and soon be assisting the Federation in building ships like the Liberator or Scorpio, equipped with star drive and teleport facilities. There's no way the others were stunned, and even if they had been, they'd face summary execution after a kangaroo court trial. Better they died fighting. Better they died together.

I told my g/f that this episode was like a mule kick to the stomach. We all completely understand your reactions to this, don't feel badly. Maybe when the dust settles, you could do a wrap up video? For my part, even though they did leave the window open a bit, I think the very heavy implication is that they were all killed. Honestly, I would not want Avon to have to suffer living after knowing what he'd done to Blake (and Anna beforehand). It's just too darned much. There's LOTS of fanfic out there, and some of that is pretty good. There's theories and "what ifs" galore. As rough as this is, much of B7's legacy is tied to the dramatic punch of this. Avon and Blake really needed each other, and suffered without the other. Blake became more distrustful, like Avon, and Avon became downright paranoid and nearly insane. When they met again, they didn't realize how much the other had changed. And that's the real tragedy. Having said all that, I sure wish it had ended differently. I've enjoyed your reactions and when you do another series I've watched, I'll be sure to tune in again. Take care and be well!!

The atmosphere in this second half of the finale is too palpable to believe that it was an intentional cliffhanger, when the season started rough and found itself halfway in... And yet The running theme of trust that carries on from the previous two episodes suggests otherwise. The computer beeps in the new base even have an ominous tone. Given the airdate, the backlash to this ensured that future interviews would be sure to mention "we'll end on the biggest cliffhanger ever", though other interviews say the writers were having trouble doing more "cat vs mouse" episodes and were running out of ideas. I honestly don't know the definitive, but the last two episodes do hint at a possible setup for a future run. Except Avon is clearly going mad over the season and I just think they wanted to go out with a big bang. The ending credits with Avon's gun followed by a dozen troopers' just hits it home harder. It's still weird how a simple miscommunication led to Avon killing Blake. The moment that klaxon sounded is when you know it hits the fan. My heart sank royally that first viewing. And it's never gotten easier. 13:04 sums it up. I don't think anything made since has come close to an ending like this in terms of raw (and brutal) character development. Arlan, I think, was given Servalan's lines, as Jacqueline Pearce was unable to be in this finale. Yeah, the crew being shot one by one so straightforward still hurts. Then the haunting end credits where the gun sounds say it all. So glad they did not show it on screen. There's no way that Avon survived. The others? Maybe stunned, they are shown in a way that allows explanations. I've watched the finale many times in rewatches and I'm still never ready. The storytelling was so good that it was easy to buy into Blake's new situations, and the handling of the plot twist of being a cover was perfectly timed. Gareth Thomas wanted to be definitively written out so he wouldn't be typecast, hence the visible blood. That may be another reason they didn't show Avon directly. One side note - in the filming, Gareth tried getting Paul Darrow to laugh while filming the straddle scene and they only had one take available. Kudos to Paul. The show will always live on and the Big Finish audios definitively help. But Blake's 7 is truly unique and a treasure. Loving your reactions to these shows, theyvm get me to think differently at times as well, and I think you'll love The Prisoner as you get into it. I rewatched a few episodes lately. It'd good stuff!
@jeanlafayette71527 ай бұрын
According to various interviews I've seen/read, Servalan was never scripted to appear in the finale. Jacqueline Pearce was contracted to appear in 8 episodes of season 4, and 'Warlord' was her eighth. From one perspective, her absence is appropriate. She wasn't there at the very beginning of the series. The enemy was the Federation itself, a corrupt system, aided by traitors and using essentially faceless guards to massacre any opposition. And that's exactly what we have here, too.

Don't cry. It was the Blake clone and everybody was stunned. At least that's what I keep telling myself.

What do you do with that ending? Haha. Greatest ending to a TV series ever. Theory is, Vila survived, Avon shot the lights out and ducked, the troopers shot each other, and that was Blake's clone.

I like that idea. Would have been a cool callback with the clone but I also liked seeing the real Blake again.

The theory that Avon and Vila survived is extended in the tie in novel Afterlife; according to Vila, he ‘hit the deck’ and hid.

What would have been the cherry on top is if Servalan had turned up at the last minute to gloat.

That would have been a great addition to the ep.

I suggest you now react to 'Blake's Junction 7', a short but humorous film featuring some very well known actors. There's a copy on KZbin.

I've just found it on KZbin and i'm definitely going to see if I can fit in reacting to it :)

The episode was very very good. I wish there was more but I'm glad there are audiobooks to listen to.
