Agree, anybody who argues that Avon hated Blake (and some do argue that) has never understood that scene where Avon finds him. And where he hears he's dead; his face just melts.

Zen's final moments are pretty heartbreaking. A young girl even sent a letter to Peter Tuddenham who did the voice to make sure he was alright.

Terminal is a brutal episode. The false hope of Blake returning, the Liberator getting dissolved and Zen dying by inches. You dealt with it, better than I thought you would, to be fair. 10 yo me was traumatised!

Terminal was the first episode I saw when, in 1993, after an 11-year hiatus, I rediscovered Blakes 7 when the VHS tapes started coming out. By that time, Dr Who had long finished, and I was really through with 80s-style whizzbang special effects in Sci-Fi. That's why watching this episode after such a long time just blew me away and immediately turned me into a Blakes 7 fan. It took almost 3 years for me to locally acquire the full set of VHS tapes. The rest is history. I've never looked back.

It's Paul Darrow's smile, right down the camera lens at the end of the episode that gets me. It's very much an actor reveling in the moment! :) A superb episode that, at the time, felt so very final. But then there was the announcement, as the credits rolled, that Blake's 7 would be back. You're gonna LOVE series 4!

Season 4 is a roller coaster ride and is one I'd call "underrated". Every season has a couple clunkers, but the clunkers definitely do not define the whole. Season 4 definitely inspired other shows as well. Will mention those later on...

The green gunk that the dying Liberator got covered with was a toy popular in the late 70s/early 80s called 'Slime'. It came in a plastic pot and you had to keep it in the fridge. A later version became available called 'Slime with worms' which was, basically, Slime with little plastic worms in it. When they were dressing the set to film this episode there was a mad scramble to buy up all the pots of Slime available. Unfortunately all they could find was Slime with worms and hoards of people were drafted in to pick the little worms out before they covered the set for filming... The things they went through for this show! xx

OMG,, I'd forgotten all about "Slime". I had the one with the worms in it and I was scared of opening it due to the worms LOL. Think it came in an orange coloured plastic container (which was meant to resemble a miniature metal bin with a lid) and had "Slime" label in green gooey print. I had nightmares after that Blakes 7 episode, the fizzing acid, jelly covered walls and gooey Slime dripping down scared me and with Zen also dying, it was all too much for a timid 5 year old. Terminal was the one Blakes 7 episode that's been in my conscience ever since, poor Zen.

I think your comment about Avon having the biggest heart of all is very percipient, given how he was prepared to risk everything to find Blake. Although he tries to make out he was solely motivated by self-interest, I think it is clear from the scene he has with Fake Blake that there is a real affection there. The events of this episode must be absolutely devastating for Avon's ego, too - not only does he allow Servalan to fool him, but as a result the Liberator ends up being destroyed. Completely agree that Zen's final moments are heartbreaking, perhaps the saddest moment in the whole show. As others have said, it was thought at the time of production that this would be the last ever episode, hence why the Liberator was destroyed. Gareth Thomas agreed to return on the basis that this would be the end of the show - he had left after series 2 because he wanted to take on more "serious" theatrical roles (he was appearing in a Shakespeare play at the time of filming his appearance in Terminal, hence the beard). Sally Knyvette had decided to leave at the same time as Thomas because she was frustrated with Jenna having too little to do in series 2, and also because she wanted to pursue academic study. This was also the last ever B7 episode written by Terry Nation, who moved to California shortly afterwards to work in American TV.

The story goes that Terminal was meant to be the final episode of Blakes 7, but the then head of the BBC’s drama department was so impressed by it that he called up to have the announcement of a new series put out after the episode finished broadcasting

Indeed, it was during broadcast that Bill Slater renewed the series. This caused a fair few issues as the cast and crew had moved on, and the new series was wanted sooner rather than later. I think at the time Michael Keating was in France

It was the legendary Bill Cotton Controller of BBC-1 who enjoyed the episode so much that he rang whilst the episode was on air to quickly rush out an announcement that the show would return which suprised everyone involved with the series except the viewers who like myself thought thaw show would run and run. Bill was one of the sole champions of Blake's 7 and was a huge fan when almost everyone around him in the BBC hated the series. A terrific reaction from Claire from what still remains a very dramatic and superbly plotted episode. Zen's death gets me every time.

This is one of my favourite episodes. When I first watched this that scene where Zen is dying really moved me and seeing the Liberator destroyed is heartbreaking. It’s nice to see Blake return even if it is only an illusion. I love Jacqueline Pearce’s performance. She has this wonderful cold calm menace. That last scene when the Liberator breaks up and Avon smiles at the end is just brilliant. Great reaction.

Glad you enjoyed this one. So many seminal moments. I remembered you saying about Moloch that Vila's reactions were a bit one trick (and he is often underwritten as just a drunken coward). This one gives Michael Keating some great chances to show his sharpness, deactivating the auto-repair to try and save the ship and grabbing Orac by pretending he's a sculpture.

It's funny how memory works. "I have failed you" as Zen is closing down is a strong memory, but I was convinced it was Avon he was talking to then rather than Vila. Rewatching this episode, I was actually impressed by Vila's attempts to solve the problem when it was just he and Dayna left on the ship - knowing that the auto-repair is not going to work and then telling the computer to switch off those circuits and put everything into trying to find another solution was a good idea. A thing that always bothered me was that Servalan walks through the ship in triumph at the end, convinced she finally has the Liberator, but seemingly does not notice that the ship is visibly falling apart all around her until it starts to explode after she tries to move it. "Maximum power" with her arms stretched out is another iconic Servalan moment. I hadn't realised until I just read people talking about it in other comments that the series was meant to be finished here and that the 4th series was a last minute change of plan. With the Liberator gone, Blake's 7 will never be the same again.

Someone was talking about this today and - of course - the thing most people focus on is the ending. My suggestion was that, for those kids like us weaned on it, the death of Zen and the Liberator was like watching your dog being run over in slo-motion. And that feels ridiculous in hindsight, but it shows how they managed to turn that design and voice performance into an entity you could actually care about. But, of course, the story isn't over...

Devastating and heartbreaking. I'd waited ALL season long for some word on Blake and then it happens, and then they pull it all away. So very B7. The scene between the two was a bittersweet reminder of their great chemistry and how nothing since had equaled it. Sigh. And yes, poor old Zen with his last gasps was just wrenching. The scene where Avon hears that Blake is dead, watch how his face just...melts. His feelings betray him and it's such wonderful acting by Darrow. And earlier when Avon confronts Tarrant with the gun "No one is going to stop me...least of all, you!" Very revealing. Avon has suffered so horribly this year. The heartbeat sound during the episode was really effective in creating tension and mood. Onward...I guess. Yes, there is more.

A wild ending to season 3! Poor Zen and the Liberator. I do love Zens' last message to the crew, quite sad and affecting. It's a great finale. And a cameo by Blake! Another question about this episode is exactly who are those people working with Servalan? The Terminal project wasn't a recent experiment as Tarrant mentions that records say it broke up. So assuming it was abandoned many years prior to this episode, Servalan must have brought those people with her. No sign of any Federation troopers and their guns are different too.

As you say most of us know and know what is in store for you and this episode is a great example. No Blake for an entire season only to turn up in finale almost unrecognizable and in critical condition. I remember watching and thinking the crew would be reuniting with Jenna and the battle against federation would be back on track and won by end of episode it was pretty much deflated with no winners and although Servalan dead Zen and Liberator destroyed and crew abandoned on Terminal. Shockingly Blake apparently dead, cremated and the end of Blake's 7.

I have waited SO LONG to see your reaction to this climatic episode, Marie-Clare. It took a bit of effect for me to NOT suggest: "Brace yourself." Like everyone else here, we are bound to respect your wishes. It DEFINITELY has Terry nation written all over it! "It's gonna be good!" And, yes; Terminal is cut-throat Terminal! No matter how many times I've watched it, there's a certain crescendo build as we come closer to this episode and as it unfolds. Seeing one of the Liberator's nacelles breaking off and spinning was a scene that has really stuck with me. And watching the flight deck actually being broken apart on-screen was as heartbreaking as it was brilliant. So final. I mean, how many TV series come to an end where we actually get to witness the set being irreparably trashed? I think that losing the Liberator is more profound than losing a major character, like Blake. You figured we may be losing one of the crew at season's end. Did you figure it might be Liberator? The iconic ship that I think was itself like a major character? Not to mention, Zen: arguably the most realistic computer in all sci-fi. A unique way for a spaceship to be destroyed, as well. Dissolved from the outside in by a corrosive fluid. Also, you actually see the ship being blown apart. It all adds up to a brilliant end to an iconic ship. You may not remember this, but cast your mind back to The Robot of Death during Tom Baker's era. You were saddened over the death of friendly Robot D-84. I commented: “Right! I IMPLORE you to watch Blakes 7.” This was the episode that came to mind. Zen's struggling final words were probably the only time Zen showed any indication that he was more than just an information-responding computer. The only time Zen showed any personality. I could be wrong, but I think in this episode, Zen spoke the most than in any other. In Redemption, the Liberator's destruction was seemingly predicted. Unrelated, Liberator's demise finally came to pass. I think, this time, killing off the Liberator was a masterstroke. It cemented a raised fondness for the Liberator.

In Australia, we first saw this episode in August 1980. As far as we knew, that had to be the end. How could it be the same again? At the time, everything was happening too quickly for my mind to process. My then-14-year-old self found Servalan's attire so astonishing. Looking like she's going to a wedding, or to a Hollywood banquet, or going to visit the Queen. LOL! Anyway, in January 1982, the series was repeated, with season 3 coming to an end in August - again. It wasn't until about October - two months later - Aussies started seeing trailers for a 4th season! It also came as a surprise to the cast and crew after Terminal was finished. Our journey was to continue. So does yours.

I remember this episode giving me nightmares as a kid, as Terminal was broadcast just a few weeks after my 7th birthday. It's that music as the Liberator goes through the cloud of fluid particles (2:41) for some reason it really got stuck in my head. A very similar piece of music was used earlier in Blake's Seven but I can't remember which episode but it's without that sort of watery/wobbly effect on top. My memories of Series 3 are much stronger than earlier episodes as the BBC repeated most of the third series the following year. I remember the repeat of Terminal was just before the school summer holidays in 1981, probably as a refresher for Series 4 which was starting in the autumn.

Yeah, getting Gareth back for a cameo was great. I think he was in a play at the time, which explains the beard. It was somewhat overshadowed by the destruction of the Liberator. It was heart breaking for me see the end of Zen. Objectively, it should lack an emotional response. The stoic ship's computer, how could you feel attachment to it? It was just a machine after all. Those last few lines show he was much more than that though. I don't know if you've been paying attention but every since Gan died, Vila is drinking often. I think it really messed him up more than rest of the crew appreciate.

I do think the scene where Toron and Reeval were savagely attacked by, the ape like creatures the Links was savage in billions of ways and I also thought the personnel working for arch-villain Servalan in this episode were oddly dressed there were no mutoids or even Federation troopers present in this episode which was rather strange and also the Liberator had passed through a red cloud in season 1 episode Breakdown when Gan,s limiter went faulty in order to get Gan to the space station XK72 in that case the Liberator sustained not damage externally or internally unlike in this episode Terminal. I did find the scene, where Vila and Dayna notice the gooey liquid attacking the ship quite scary and also I noticed the green liquid was either fairy liquid or even swarefega but the fact the Liberator gets blown up into billions, tens of billions and hundreds of billions of tiny little pieces is savage and the demise of the ship and its master computer Zen really upset me when this episode went out on tv over 43 years ago.

I must say Marie-Clare the way the Liberator, and its master computer Zen were attacked and destroyed by the space liquid some sort of acid was savage and also the blowing up of the Liberator was upsetting and the fact the crew of the Liberator are stranded on Terminal and left with the awareness that their regular arch-enemy and the principal villain Servalan herself has tricked them into believing that Blake who went missing off-screen at the start of season 3 of B7 was on Terminal alive but severely wounded and unable to teleport back to the ship without dying seemed to me rather suspicious and when Avon realised that the returning arch-villain Servalan herself was on Terminal and had sent messages to Avon purporting to come from Blake made me suspicious and it made me wonder if the Blake Avon saw and spoke to was the real Blake and not another clone similar to the 2 clones we saw in season 2 of B7 in Weapon when Blake was still in B7. I also wondered if the Blake Avon, saw was possibly, an android replica like the android replicas seen in classic Dr Who such as the replicas of the first, fourth and fifth Doctors and some of their companions. I learnt that the beard the illusion, of Blake wore, was grown by Gareth Thomas for a character he went to play in Twelfth Night which is what Gareth Thomas left B7 to do instead of doing season 3 of B7.

Ah, ‘Blake’s 7’, a big part of my childhood. I remember going shopping the day after ‘Terminal’ aired and hearing a few ‘oh my God, did you see what happened in B7 last night?’ conversations. If you think this episode was eventful, wait until you see the S4 climax! Holy Moley, can’t wait to see your face as you watch that! Lots of good episodes coming up in S4 before you get there though, so enjoy the ride. Also, in case you don’t already know, Big Finish has a truly excellent range of B7 audio plays with most of the original cast. Don’t miss them, they recreate the tone of the TV show perfectly.

I do say Marie-Clare on the whole, IMO series 3 of B7 was a definite improvement on season 2 and given how both regular arch-enemy and returning arch-villain Servalan herself appeared in no less than 9 episodes she also no longer had one regular underling working or her unlike she did in seasons 1 and 2 given the fact that Travis was killed off and had exited the series with a bang at the end of series 2 was by no means a terrible thing but I have no doubt said this before it is billions of pities the original actor who played Travis did not do season 2 or that Travis was not killed at the ned of series 1 instead and had that been the case and season 2 of B7 had introduced an entirely new character with a different name as a new underling for the arch-enemy Servalan herself that would have made billions of times more sense and also it would have definitely been a big improvement on seaosn 2 of B7. I hope you enjoy watching and reacting to the next season of B7, and the rest of classic Dr Who plus Sapphire and Steel which I also like along with Blakes Seven and classic Dr Who and also Space 1999.

Well, uncredited there are DW regulars Stuart Fell and Deep Roy in the 'Link' costumes, along with Gareth Milne, who was Peter Davison's stunt double. Oh, and a guard is played by Nicholas Frankau who was one of the hidden pilots in 'Allo 'Allo'....I'm clutching at straws now. Here's a fun bit of trivia. I think of B7 as series A-C + (not spoiling the seasons count) like the Liberator years. I was never a fan of Blake as such, I always wanted things done Avon’s way however you may or may not have noticed that under Blake’s leadership things got done whereas under Avon they are very much treading water or as in this episode actually worse off. This was definitely meant to be the final episode with Gareth Thomas agreeing to cameo in it as long as Blake was confirmed as dead which may well be why Servalan does go into extensive detail about him being dead and cremated.

I do say Marie-Clare people who post spoilers really, are annoying and also there are people who in some cases have not seen some film or series and have this tendency to ask consistent questions about what happens before scenes are shown and those people are IMO worse than people who have seen things numerous times who go posting spoilers and it pays for people to be allowed to watch things and find out for themselves rather than be told or even keep asking what happens before it happens that is plain silly either way. I do also say, Marie-Clare enjoy series, 4 of B7 and the rest of classic Dr Who and Sapphire and Steel . I hope you can get to view two other, sci-fi series Star Maidens and Children of the Stones which both star Gareth Thomas in lead roles. I also found when this episode was originally broadcast in march 1980 five day before my 11th birthday I thought when the Liberator was blown to billions, tens of billions and hundreds of bilions of tiny little pieces that arch-enemy Servalan who had tricked the crew of the Liberator into believing Blake was on Terminal but the Blake Avon meets and speaks to was not the authentic Blake at all but in reality an illusion sporting a beard I did wonder when arch-enemy and regular arch-villain Servalan herself stated Blake was dead and cremated on a planet Jevron did get me thinking was it really Blake or a clone of Blake like the 2 we saw in season 2 episode Weapon either way I was dubious of what the arch-enemy Servalan told Avon and co before she and her comrades boarded the damaged Liberator.

On to the next season. I'd say the best and the worst episodes are yet to come for you. (Fans may know which ones I'm referring to - particularly the worst, the best (I think it is anyway) has a name that refers to what a planet does.) Either way, an interesting new direction without the Liberator.

I do say IMO Marie-Clare Avon, in this episode is behaving strangely like Blake did in season 2 episode Voice From the Past when Blake was under the influence of a telepathic signal which lured the Liberator to Asteroid PK118. I do say also Avon telling the rest of the crew, to take the ship away from Terminal and abandon him is rather extreme cold as Avon can be they do care for him and when I first saw this episode of B7 in 1980 the year I hit 11 years of age and was also ended my time in horrible primary school to start secondary school I also thought that Blake had really come back but when it was revealed to Avon and co that the Blake Avon had met on the life support machine with a beard like David Bellamy had was not the real Blake but in reality an illusion of Blake a computer image and the statement regular arch-villain Servalan made that the real Blake himself was really dead and cremated from serious injuries on a planet named Jevron made me wonder had a clone Blake been on planet Jevron and been severely injured and thus died there or was regular arch-enemy Servalan herself simply lying to the crew of the Liberator.
