These are intertwined with scenes from the 1930's "Dust Bowl" when a large portion of the American mid-west became a desert when over use of the land & an extended drought brought about just horrible conditions

Part of it was everyone kept growing the same crops which stripped the earth of the same nutrients and minerals. It started happening a year before the stock market crash and which made things even worse. They didn't do much in the way of crop rotation or letting fields go fallow for a season.

Thank God we figured out how to avoid land destruction by agricultural rotation and other techniques- even tapping the aquifers would have saved them. What an awful time to have experienced. All they wanted was rain.

For my Brit brothers and sisters, The line about being baptized in holy water and shine (moonshine) sippin' shine in the evenin', and dogs runnin' is about using dogs to aid in the fall hunting season. Edit: 4:26 If you are wondering why that fuel looks funny, it's red-dye diesel fuel. Tax free for farm and ranch use only. It's illegal to use it on the street here in the U.S.

Blake Shelton is what they call the "new breed" of country, though he has a much older sound on a good proportion of his work. Oklahoma born and bred, the newer parts of the video were shot on his property in Oklahoma, where he and Gwen are living at the moment, with the current situation, it's probably the safest place to be... He has a new single out called "Minimum Wage", it's not bad... Definitely agree with a lot of the comments, "Old Red" " Austin" and "Some Beach" are worth a listen... might wanna check out "Hillbilly Bone" duet with Trace Atkins, it's a fun one, and then you could probably try going down the rabbit hole that is T.A. some fun stuff, some serious stuff and bits in between...

I live in the Southern United States so lots of pickup trucks around here. The downside to owning one is that everybody and his brother is always asking you to haul something around for them. Or so some pickup drivers have told me. I've never owned one, but I'd sort of like to have one just so I don't have to ask other people to help haul my stuff around. LOL. I certainly would hate to have to pay for the gas to run one around, though. And FYI, Blake Shelton was one of the original judges of The Voice and has been a judge on every season. Old Red was one of his earlier songs but it's well worth a listen.

My grandma is 102 years old. Having been the child of a farmer (it's still in the family) through the Great Depression and dust bowl years affected her for her entire life, no matter how financially stable she was for nearly her entire life. She influenced her kids, who influenced me and my cousins. We are all still impacted by those years, definitely not as dramatically as she was, but she passed some of it along.

I believe it. My husband's grandparents moved to California during the Dust Bowl to literally the final destination in Grapes of Wrath. The area is basically all Okies and Portuguese. It was a fun suprise for them that my husband would end up marrying a woman that lived about 20 minutes from (on the Texas side of the Red River) where they were from. Needless to say, I get a lot of persimmon cookies.

Yes, you are correct the black and white footage took place in the 1930's. The severe droughts caused dust storms that literally created desserts that choked out crops and livestock. The Great Depression also began in 1929 and lasted through 1939. 25% unemployment, 1/3 of banks failed, life savings gone, homeless skyrocketed and foreign trade collapsed. It was one of the reasons the US was so hesitant to enter WWII. We were in the infancy stage of recovery economically.

He used to be married to country star Miranda Lambert. This video was filmed on his own property in Oklahoma, I read somewhere. "The devil went down to Georgia" is a reference to Charlie Daniels famous song & 'Shine' is Hillbilly homemade liquor, called Moonshine. For a fun song check out 'Ol' Red' which was one of his first hits, when he was much younger.
