Great, rich sounds. The pad around 1:30 reminds me of Madonna's "Live to Tell." is it literally the same patch in each one? Sound like some detuning between modules to sweeten them up. The TX816 always sounded a little more hi-fi than the dx, somewhere in between the mark 1 and mark 2. Every try the "component" patches? You get these huge 4-layer pianos, etc where each module does a different part of the sound.

The TX-816 was used in "Live to Tell" for all of the synth sounds except for the strings which came from an Emulator II. It was programmed by Patrick Leonard, a true master of FM programming and an avid Atari ST user.

Thanks for this and first video. If you have a TX but no DX7 is it possible to manually programme the TX? I think there used to be software back in the day, but probably for an Atari or something. I don't suppose you know if Windows did one? Thanks.

David simons hey, so there’s a program called Dexed, it’s a free VST for windows and Mac. You can save Sysex files and transfer them to your machine. It’s also easier to understand FM with that VST. It’s not possible to program from the front panel (kinda like a matrix 1000) hope that helps.

Hi Blake. Maybe a year ago there was a small hardware desktop box with I think 4 knobs for programming all your Yamaha FM synths. I wanted one each for my tx816 & Fs1r . I think it was in my eBay watchlist but it's vanished for no reason. I can't search for it as I don't know make or name. Can't find it online & it's like it never existed. I couldn't buy then as I am retired, but hoped to get them if I can soon get a little job. I may have to go software root from Windows if poss, but I wondered if you knew what I was referring to? It was only about £200 I think & I couldn't afford something like a Dtronics DT7 at about £1500! Thanks.

Was it the X81 programmer? That one was for the TX81z. That's the only one I could think of.

Does this unit only work with a DX7 keyboard? That's what the manual says... but in this day and age, can I use any midi keyboard and DAW?

you just need a basic midi controller, but if you want to edit sounds in real time yeah probably. Honestly it helps if you have any dx synth to control it because it was pretty much meant to be controlled by one.
