I bred Discus, Coryadoris and Apistograma Chiclids in the 70's and 80's I shipped all over the world. Some of my fish were pictured in "The Encyclopedia of Tropical Fishes". Dr. Burges from TFH came to my house a took pictures. I never got credit for those fish. But when I called him and mentioned it the publisher sent me a free book. Adolfo Schwartz was occasional able to send me some really elegant discus. Mostly from Brazil but also (I think) from Columbia and Peru. I also was able to get some very rare Corydoris. I'm 82 years old, but I think often of building another fish room. The "bug never goes away"

WHOAAA! This is next level. That is a lot of dedication to my favourite fish, great to see. Awesome size on a lot of them too. I prefer the parents raising the fry always though as the parents' mucus provides a constant source of nutrition which also contains antimicrobials that help protect them from infections. And of course it's just the natural way it is supposed to be; I could be wrong but I feel like the fry would also have this process ingrained in them and hence have an improved skill set when they then become parents themselves. You could simply avoid any disease getting to the fry by prophylactically treating the parents prior to spawning, though of course this would incur some extra cost. I'm curious how many people help manage the facilities here, because that is A LOT of work to keep everything running smoothly; I used to work on a tropical fish farm in NZ so understand first hand. Keep up the good work!

@@BlakesAquatics I would like to see a follow-up video to take the obvious next step from the breeder's facility to the customer's home aquarium. From Darren's point of view, how would a Discus owner set up a "forever" tank for these fish? Are discus only kept successfully in bare tanks? What are the do's and don'ts of setting up a home discus aquarium. That would be very informative.

Darren’s family business is an awesome Discus facility, he explains everything really well, full of great detail, especially the taking the fry away from the parents in the beginning, and artificially raising them, so eventually all fish are free from parasites 🦠 and the K1 filtration on this scale for Discus, I’ve not seen or heard off before. 👍 Would love to see a follow up of the new setup being installed in these huge vats containing the Discus. 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

16:54 or so you show the filtration system, i would have really like to see & talk about that a bit more in depth. A missed opportunity, right there as an fishmonger interviewer. The last fish room was well done, but i will likely never relate to that type of filtration. :/ Otherwise great video, really enjoyed seeing/learning about this level of the hobby.

@AndyParishani
@AndyParishani 9 ай бұрын
Hello. I have a problem in begining steps of breeding. I'll be approciate if you help me. At first the pair take care of babies carefully until the first two days of free swimming (10 days overall) but, suddenly I don't know what happens! All of them disapears and the parent start to lay new eggs! If they eat their babies why they don't earlier! I don't know exactly what's need to do! I don't want to raise them in a separate tank.
@BlakesAquatics
@BlakesAquatics 9 ай бұрын
The eggs are coming and at that time the parents feel the babies are a threat to the eggs so they eat them. Its a tricky one but youd be better off separating the fry once its about time for new eggs

That artificial breeding is time consuming. If used my system I develop 30 years ago will require no water change and fries take the brine shrimps on the third day. I have an article in TFH and 1 in Australia magazine. I prefer PVC over ceramics. I had 40 tanks in my days when I was breeding.
