I bred Discus, Coryadoris and Apistograma Chiclids in the 70's and 80's I shipped all over the world. Some of my fish were pictured in "The Encyclopedia of Tropical Fishes". Dr. Burges from TFH came to my house a took pictures. I never got credit for those fish. But when I called him and mentioned it the publisher sent me a free book. Adolfo Schwartz was occasional able to send me some really elegant discus. Mostly from Brazil but also (I think) from Columbia and Peru. I also was able to get some very rare Corydoris. I'm 82 years old, but I think often of building another fish room. The "bug never goes away"

You’re looking good and sounding a heap more confident! Really liking the new style 👌100% agree with all of these also the API quick start and similar products are there as a helper to do the fish in cycle not so you CAN do a fish in cycle! to many novice aquarist see KZbinrs use these products and think it’s ok to add the 50 odd fish as long as they use quick start or filler boost and it will be ok.. then well we all know what happens..

8:46 Gonna say it, Dog < cat.................................. <Fish. In the terms of ease of looking after, i'd say the fish are WAYYYYYYY more hard work/Knowledge than having a dog or cat. Gonna call them out here, I went into a local PETSTOCK the other day. They had a "betta sorority" tank. It was about a 2 footish tank at biggest. In this tank was a single betta, a pleco, and 6 corydoras. With the corydoras they were ONE OF EACH SUB SPECIES.

@@BlakesAquatics i was in shock. They also dont stock them other than "assorted corydoras" which look to be albinoor something similar. So every corydoras they had in the tank were specially orderd in for that tank 😳

You missed the one I would like to see banished forever - you can keep 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. I'm sure that's fine with fish on an inch or so in length but once you have bigger fish the argument is ridiculous. A 2 inch fish is not twice the size of a 1 inch fish. Assuming similar body shape the 2 inch fish is twice as long, twice as wide and twice as deep. It is actually 8 times the size of the 1 inch fish. A 3 inch fish is 27 times the size of the 1 inch fish. 20 neon tetras are fine in a 20 gallon tank but if you follow the 1 inch per gallon rule you should be able to keep 2 10 inch oscars in the same 20 gallon tank instead. Good luck with that.

I agree with you on rinsing your filters with tap water, but I have the feeling your reasons for it might not be fully correct. Yes, rinsing your filter in tap water may physically remove some bacteria but that would be no different to rinsing your filter in aquarium water. You mentioned tap water killing the nitrifying bacteria, but this takes a very long time. The University of South Australia did a study looking at the effects of chlorine (specifically chloramine) in water on nitrifying bacteria. I their study they found that at the higher end of the chlorine concentrations found in drinking water it takes over an hour of exposure to kill 99% of the nitrifying bacteria. This means that a quick rinse is going to do very little to kill the bacteria. I can't count the number of times I have heard people say don't rinse your filter with tap water, when that is clearly not correct. Link to study: www.researchgate.net/publication/21373491_Bacterial_nitrification_in_chloraminated_water_supplies

Small suggestion: there are plastic razor blades that are cheap and won't scratch glass at all. Plastic blades sound dumb, but remember you're not actually cutting anything. They're pretty great when used right.

Heya! So I just wanted to share my experience with fish-in cycling! It's definitely not a beginner friendly type set-up, unless you've got that experience, like you had said, or in my case, I did extensive research before setting up my tanks only a year ago! I had never kept any type of aquariums or even lizards and whatnot, so i had no idea what to do going into this, but it quickly became my little passion project! . . . For my set-up i used I used soil substrate with a sand cap, but also, i went to my local river and got a good number of wild Gambusia fish, river leaf litter, some moss that was growing in the water, stones wood and even plants like Salvinia minima, bocopa, hornwort and pennywort! I used Gambusia and ramshorn snails in the initial set-up because of their high tolerance to changes in water chemistry. Silly hardy little fish and snails! 😂 but i had done about a month of research on how to basically kick start an aquatic ecosystem!

Cannot agree more, very good piece of advice to put shrimps in a well planted aquarium and wait to mature the aquarium first. Ive noticed their favorite place is the "forest" of Limnophilia sessiflora. I've Neocaridina heteropoda (yellow fire) in a community tank and they believe they are fishes too 😂 Swimming all the time, very active.
