It’s definitely joining the ranks of Ray Milland and the bat in “The Lost Weekend.” Come to think of it, we need more Udo Kier singing “Der Adler” from “My Own Private Idaho.” It’s such a WTF moment, even with context.

The moment you guys started talking about realistic psychological horror I thought of the exact same thing as Craig - Nocturnal Animals. Even though they remove you from reality in that movie, putting the plot into a book, the roadside situation was so realistic and so terrifying that it gave me a permanent fear of traveling in rural areas with my wife and daughter. No joke, I watched this movie like 5 years ago, I still think about it constantly

Even in Natural Born Killers, as kaleidoscopically nihilistic as that is, it does far more to give a reason for Mickey and Mallory’s spree, why they’ve so wantonly embraced violence. It’s gleefully problematic, but it’s better than nothing. Regardless, great episode as always!

It's similar to NBK, but the backstory is the plot twist. Somewhat typical of flashback styles of plot movement. Kind of a double flip/reveal with the change from past to present tense and actions and morals put into perspective.

So Im not the only person that predicted the agents were the killers!? The second they said “remember why we’re here” I figured out what was happening. It had 90s post Tarantino “watch how cool and edgy this is” wannabe noir energy. Its incredibly proud with how “clever” and nihilistic it was and its not clever at all.

EEAAO is hands down the best film of the year for me too. Through out awards season I have seen many people think it’s too weird to win at the Oscars or other guild awards and since then it’s been sweeping up wins. When it got PGA AND DGA I knew its a done deal regarding best picture. Its SAG sweep was so great to watch because they dedicated their ensemble actor win to the legendary James Hong! His speech was so good too!

Heres a question for you guys: What are some of your most unpopular film opinions and depending on how unpopular they are do you tend to keep them to yourselves or demand everyone within earshot reckon with the wisdom and truth you are laying down!? (Like I do!😜🤣) My most recent ones: Top Gun 1 is a terrible film and Top Gun Maverick is simply an ok film propped up by low expectations and its box office success. A real controversial one I have is The Usual Suspects twist ruins the film and Black Panther (my fav superhero) never should have been nominated for best picture.

Here's the thing about "Police Story" - when I first saw it in London on Channel 4 in 1991, the scene where he's manning the phones at the provincial police station (with all of the Buster Keaton-esque business with the chair on wheels, the 5 phones at a time, tossing the pencils to himself, etc.) where he gets the call from the woman who has been raped while he's cooking his noodles was excised. When I saw it in a cinema in Seattle, that scene was in the print shown - and it hasn't been in any other American release (on VHS or DVD) until the Criterion Collection released it a few years ago. It's treated as a joke, because she says the person who raped her was her husband, and in a lot of countries (as in the US until shockingly recently) it is assumed you CANNOT be "raped" by your spouse, as it is assumed you would be sexually available to him at all times. I believe that is why the scene was taken out, both in GB and the US; even though Chan's stunt-work with the chair, the phones, the pencils, and the noodles is a lot of fun (thanks, Criterion Collection).

That bend vs break metaphor for twists is apropos, it’s one of the reasons I dislike The Usual Suspects, one of my more unpopular film opinions. I don’t like films that hinge on a twist that pretty much negates everything I saw previously. It breaks my immersion and feels like I wasted my time.

Looking back at all the Oscar related movies of 2022 there’s a theme of excess. Like every movie is about too much of something. Over eating, over reacting, over obsessing etc. so it’s like what movie was the most excessive: EEAAO

While I agree with Craig about the film overall, I actually found the two cops frightening. What really hurt the film for me was the serial killer angle. Not only was the twist predictable, but they were too campy for me. They're supposed to be the apex predators of the film, so why make them less believable & less scary than the cops?

There's a reason Jennifer Lynch hasn't directed a movie in over a decade. Some sporadic work (usually 1 to 2 episodes per series) on dozens of shows. Like her father, but less talented. Though, Lynch himself is extremely over rated. A director that makes movies for himself, not his audience.
