I have played both. The major difference is the setting focus. RQIII (the Deluxe Set) was designed for generic fantasy whereas RQG (from the Starter Set) is strictly Glorantha and both the setting and the rules are intertwined with the runes. With RQIII the runes we’re thematically associated. I love them both, though I found RQIII to be more versatile.

I'm really happy you did this video! I played it back in the day and I'm getting ready to run it again with some friends. You are so right it takes a genius to create something like this. I wish I could have met Greg too. I think RQ is the best RPG ever created.

You are probably right. If there was a way of objectively measure the quality of an RPG, RuneQuest would probably end up n.1

You mention the female warrior on the front of the AH box. The older versions, RQ1 and 2, had a female warrior too...being attacked by a rock lizard or something. This theme was carried on to the GW version published in the UK. The Chaosium editions had her in hoplite armour, the GW had a glorified bikini though. This image was updated for the recent quickstart version of the new rules. Also on the cover of the Design Mechanism version, which became Mythras, but kept the hoplite lass fighting the big feckin lizard. Regarding starter sets though, we had the GW boxed set which functioned as one. A copy of the RQ2 rules, Apple Lane, Fangs. That was pretty much it for years as we had problems getting hold of things like Pavis, Snakepipe Hollow, or the cults books. We just made it up as we went along. Used White Dwarf articles for inspiration, also the Griselda stories in it. Then RQ3 came out, but the UK had GW versions of the books in poor quality hardbacks. Finally got the AH version, the softback all in one book, much better quality. The new output is excellent and the production quality of the books and customer service are great. Glad Chaosium are still in Prax and Sartar, the AH fantasy Europe thing just left us cold.

I ran an RQ 2nd edition and the Avalon Hill version the first day it was available. Our campaign lasted for six years. A lot of time passes..... The new RQ books should be here tomorrow, and I am very excited to try our the new system. So will it be another six year campaign? Fingers crossed.

Avalon Hill simply used the standard box size of their boardgames for the 80's Runequest edition, a so-called "bookcase game". Lots of Avalon Hill wargame classics came in this format, like for instance Panzer Blitz, Squad Leader, Titan, Wizard's Quest, Fortress Europa, Fury in the West etc, etc.

Interesting. Somewhere in a box, I have (I believe) the first Runequest book. Published--I think--in 1982. There was no mention of fantasy Europe. It was the same disc world Glorantha that they have always used.

The production values of the new box is top notch for the 2020s, but the old box was good for its day and I remember thinking even up to the 2010s that it had good graphic design. Very clearly presented and still one of my favourites of the era.

@@GreenTeaViewer GH was a bit like Champions, as I recall. I'm not sure how much Superhero RPGs took off (no Superman jokes intended there). There was a Marvel Heroes RPG published by TSR (the D&D people) and a DC Heroes one (that might have been West End Games), but they never became commercial front runners.

I had the 2nd ed Runequest which I loved and then Albion Hill produced the 3rd ed which I didn't like as much, you have the 3rd ed and the latest both of which I feel is inferior to the 2nd edition.

I agree. I was really sad when AH took over the franchise and never understood why they had taken over. After that the game declined and it was only the fans of the original that kept it going. I picked up the 2nd ed rules a few years back when they reprinted the rules.

Chaosium has all the old RQ2 stuff available as POD softbacks. Buy them and get the PDF free. The new version is backward compatible too, just has a few tweaks to things, and runes play a bigger role. Full of Gloranthan goodness.

Sorry, but you keep calling it Chaosium, when it is clearly the third edition by Avalon Hill. The only thing Chaosium with that edition is Glorantha which they kept the right to. That is why the third edition more or less left the bronze age world of Glorantha for a more dark ages of a fantasy Europe.

You are totally correct. I have it so internalised that it belongs to Chaosium that I didn't register the Avalon Hill conection. Thank you for pointing it out.
