The most DIFFICULT HAZARD in this game is that wall 2 module. It is so hard on level 8 not to kill yourself by wrapping around the platforms and hitting spikes. As a kid I would waste the entire day getting to the end, only to die hopelessly on that horrible level. I was only able to beat it recently with the aid of save states.
@douglashudson4706

Was recently playing through this again (been a long time since the last time I played through it) and you are completely correct. Wall clinging when you don't want to on level 8 is the worst. It's too bad the game didn't have an option to enable/disable those powerups.

I think that aspect of the game was the most alluring thing to me as a kid. Heck, I spent MONTHS exploring just the first 3 levels, combing every nook and cranny before eventually getting to the entrance to level 4. Perhaps it was because it took such time and effort that I'd feel such a sense of accomplishment when a new secret/passage was uncovered. Not unlike the first Zelda game.

@@jeanpaulmichell7243 I explored everything in levels 1-3 also... but because I couldn't beat the third boss. I beat him a handful of times with only a few lives and no continues left so I never made it far into stage 4.

@@finalcam1740 ah, you didn't know about the pause trick to kill bosses. I actually found that tactic by accident one day while pausing for one reason or another. Then later I read a game magazine that told about it, I was like 'old news man' lol. But yeah one criticism about this otherwise great game was that it had NO SAVE FEATURE. Brutal.

Those small enemies were tough. What I used to do was pop out of the tank and shoot them as Jason; the shots are lined up to hit them just right. You might take some damage, but Jason fully recovers his health every time he goes back into Sophia III. Bit of a renegade solution, but it worked well for me, especially with the mines.

I remember making it to the Plutonium boss and defeating it on my last man with no more continues. I was so freaking happy thinking I had beaten the game. I freaked out when the Underworld boss appeared. I barely had any health left. I frantically raced around the room trying to avoid his whip. He moved so fast that I only lasted a minute. That was one of the biggest FUs I experienced in a game. Never picked up the game again.

I've read that, originally, the Underworld Lord had its own stage after stage 8. The tank upgrade you got after beating the Plutonium Boss would let you drive on spikes, so there was an additional area with spikes you could then get to and go to Level 9. You can see the boss chamber itself changes between the fights. There's actually a sprite for the Spike upgrade in the game, but I don't think it works.

@@UCanBeatVideoGames , there is also a third and fourth story to the game. The story in the Game Boy Color version of the game, which is called Blaster Master: Enemy Below, aside from some boss and enemy area changes, the story was the same. In the PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360 versions of the game, there was some sort of story that everything was being infected by viruses that turned them into mutated nightmares. However, in Blaster Master Zero, they combined all of the stories into essentially one main story, plus added things from Blaster Master 2, Blaster Master: Blasting Again, and lots of all new content in the Blaster Master Zero Trilogy as well. The ultimate ending in the Blaster Master Zero Trilogy, namely, the dual endings in Blaster Master Zero 3, are sad, regardless of which one you choose.

One of my favorite games of all time. I started playing it in the early 90's, my brother teaching me about the grenade glitch. It's funny what was changed to become Master Blaster from its original Japanese counterpart. It was a completely different story and they never updated the sprite for the main character at the end scene to be Jason for the NES release, which is why his hair is blue, and they just swapped out the other character for Fred. Not many games have that kind of situation and I'm glad this game was such a hit. It was such a vital part of my childhood. I still need to play the PS4 reboot.

@U Can Beat Video Games I got a special maneuver you should try out: try jumping but pause the game before you jump, (as jump animation starts Sofia lowers to the ground, pause at that moment) if you do this you will notice the Sofia is lower to the ground and will roll forward in the direction pressed (left - right) and continue going after the D - pad is released, while moving you can aim the turret and shoot backwards! be careful when doing this, it will last only a few seconds before the jump animation catches up and makes Sofia hop! PRO TIPS: when a turbo controller is available, always use one! I recommend an NES ADVANTAGE if playing on old hardware, or a WII pro controller if playing on the classic mini, if playing on the classic mini, there is a hidden turbo feature, press the button that you want to have "turbo'ed" and then press the select button and hold both for 1 second, turbo mode for that button is now active! (do the same process to turn off) be sure to turn off the turbo if using weapons with an ammo count! if you hold A (grenade) in the over head areas, you can lock position for shooting the gun! also if playing on the mini classic, any controller that has extra buttons (WII pro) will act as turbo buttons! BEST WEAPON IN THE GAME IS THE HOMMING MISSLES!!! BEST USED WHILE IN THE AIR WITH THE TURBO!!! AUTOMATIC SCREEN CLEAR!!! I hope you revisit some of the games you feature to show a few more tricks!

I had beaten this game since the spring of 2013. The frog is the one that really had got to me when I had killed it. I thought that Jason was going in there to save it. It has been 9 years that I had beaten Blaster Master.

I think they hair was blue at the end because while they replaced the initial story from the anime-like intro, they probably didn't bother replacing the ending, seeing as few people would actually see it.

This is a really great guide, thank you for all the work you put into it! I especially appreciate how you elaborate on the little tricks like pressing select to exit the vehicle and down to enter the doorways. Back in the day I wasn't able to complete many NES titles simply because there was little to no explanation of controls, win conditions or even what to do with many of the items you receive. And that's not even mentioning where to go next or what to do when you get there (Take the infamous Castlevania II tornado/dead end for example). I'm sure your guides will help many players finally complete NES games of their youth. You are doing a great service to the retro gaming community, keep it up!

I'm actually filled with rage as I watch this. Alas, in 5th grade I let someone borrow this, in an effort to make friends at a new school, and the prick kept it. Then threatened me with his wolf-like posse of Puerto Ricans. I went to break into his house, but there were bars on the windows. Blaster Master is one of 3 games I played, but didn't beat. Fester's Quest punishes you for not upgrading your gun enough! Always remember the wave gun that was better than base gun but couldn't go through walls or anything really - forcing you to either maneuver for a better shot, frantically search for another gun upgrade drop, or take damage. While that's commonly known now, it absolutely sucked after renting the game and only having so long before it had to go back.

The problem with the thunder break is that you're using it wrong. Just as you were saying those words you passed over the skull bomber and went down to his level to shoot him with the cannon. TB goes through floors. It's very useful in area 3 where there are ceiling turrets on the undersides of platforms.
