Demolition Dave Drilling and Blasting

Күн бұрын

Another little back yard job, this time high up in the Dandenong Ranges in Olinda. Peter from PJD Building was adding an extension to an existing house when he found this massive Rhyodacite floater just below the surface. It had to go, there was no way around it, so we drilled 39 holes in the two rocks and destroyed them the very next day. Thanks to Lee from Clean Cut Excavations.

Ever had the drill, itself, end up inadvertently breaking rock? I probably already know the answer, but I'm curious. Cheers from the US.
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, sometimes the rock just breaks from the impact energy of the drill.

Are there ever issuea with cracking plaster in the houses. Do the shockwaves travel far.?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast 6 жыл бұрын
Good question Roman, there has been a very large amount of research done on this subject and we always work within conservative limits and usually design the blast so that the Peak Particle Velocity (vector sum of the three axis of ground movement) does not exceed 10mm/s. The plaster cracking threshold is around 110mm/s, Bricks and mortar crack ~ 200mm/s. Good video on this topic here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/e36Wnnemi9SMsJY

Hi Dave. From what I know, ryodacite is about 5.5 on Moh's scale; when rocks are harder to you need to use an explosive with higher VoD? If you don't mind me asking, what sort of explosive did you use here? Did you use Millisecond delays to minimise ground vibration?Cheers!
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast 6 жыл бұрын
The explosive was Orica Senatal Magnum 32mm packaged emulsion, millisecond delays were 25ms between holes and 67 between rows.

Sometimes you use blasting to split boulders; other times, you use rock-splitting mortar. I suspect that mortar is used when blasting can't be used.

HI Kevin, you are correct although sometimes a customer will specify that they do not want to use explosives for whatever reason. Sometimes we use both on the same job, such as in the case where we want a nice strait split edge on a very large rock but the vibration would be excessive if we used a heap of detonating cord and fired all these holes together, so the chemical cracking agent is a very useful tool.

I've got 27 years and about 35,000 meters on the drill Richard, holding up OK. I can see that there will be a time when I do drill rig only jobs though.
