How far from residential houses such work can be performed safely? And how safe it is for the concrete base of the neighbors' houses, can they develop cracks over time? Do you need neighbors' permission before doing such works if their house is 4 meters apart from the edge of the large rock formation?

It never ceases to amaze me how it's a mere nanosecond from the time you stomp the control til the blast happens! And all the different camera angles are really fun to watch!

A few days before this video, I was in need of some rock breaking. I started going through the videos and then you gave us this one. I've watched it 3 times now I believe, all because I like a happy ending! Enjoy watching how you treat the rock and watching the dig out! Thanks for the education and entertainment! I wish I had audio looped together of the rock cracking. I find it soothing.

With the terrible infestation of rabbits seems like a video entitled " Blasting Rodents with Dave"" would be a winner. Think of it. them little critters come out at night, matter of fact some of those yahoos in texas with extreme feral hog infestation bait a area at nite, and get them to gather ito X marks the spot. and literily blast hogs that normally hid in heavy brush. You cannot find them during the day.I have seen rabbits just about shoulder to shoulder at night during bad years, but during the day couldnt see a hair. of even 1. This is terrible crop damage and a big bad ugly problem..

What is the min gap between the 2 holes......????
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast Ай бұрын
No minimum gap, the closer the hole, if you are breaking rocks that are fully out of the ground not much force is needed so a hole spacing of 400 - 500mm is OK, if rock is tightly held in the ground, 250mm is good, only use 38mm holes, 35 may be OK, 32mm is too small.

Do you ever rotate the hydraulic splitters 90' for a second go in a different axis?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast Ай бұрын
yes, for sure. It is a hit and miss though, seems to work best if you withdraw the wedge as soon as the first sign of a crack appears and then rotate 90 degrees.

I'm all for keeping neighbor happy, but there's no way in hell I'm buying all that expanding grout just to pour it into the ground. Would of been cheaper and easyer to just put all hand on deck and get it out in 1 day the old fashioned way. They can deal with it for a day.

Have you ever imagined the rock you're breaking is the ceiling of a huge cavern? I've got a bit of a phobia about breaking through non-solid floors (walking over a bridge is no fun, let me tell you), so that straight thought would prevent me from doing your job for hours ;) And BTW, why isn't one of the blades of those hydraulic crackers longer to cover the whole travel of the wedge? You're constantly worrying about hole depth, that bit of extra material would be worth it just for your state of mind...

Dave, how did you learn this trade? is there a course? Also wondering why do you wear the dust mask while drilling when you have a vacuum going?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast Ай бұрын
How did I learn, I started reading every book I could find about it when I was about 14. The mask is not only for the stone dust (which is fairly effectively managed by the vac). the mask also protects against the very dirty oily air that comes out of the drill exhaust, I add a lot of oil in the air line so that drill lubricates well and lasts a long time. This air does not help you breathe well, the full face mask also protects my eyes against stone chips that were previously a constant problem.
