It's important to note that while there is no border in,San Andreas, you should not progress outside the map as the code that removes the blue filter from the map screen keeps going outside the boundaries, overwriting other data, which can make missions harder/completely broken, and spawn gang members in unintended places. (Fans have patched this bug, I believe SilentPatch fixes it)((results vary on different platforms)) This is why save files will suddenly have gangs in the town at the top left of the map (Vagos, I think)

In FC2 because a majority of the out-of-bounds map is surrounded by deserts, you get heat-exhaustion (malaria attack without the filter) and pass out, waking up a few dozen yards closer to the map. I think Sea of Thieves has a really inventive way to keep players in boundaries the 'red' as players nickname it is the border which is basically the magical red mist that surrounds the sea of thieves in lore which is this big shroud of fog that can't be crossed without the pirate lord's power. When you try to sail into it, it'll rapidly begin to eat away at your boat until it sinks faster than you can repair it. It's also a way players will send loot they dont want other players getting into the abyss.

I want also mention The Saboteur. This game doesn't contain any usable boat or aircraft. You can go to forbidden zone or try to swim out of the game zone. Anyway, both of this variants will make you to appear on the true battlefield (cuz the game itself is like a GTA:WW2). If you'll manage to appear there, you'll start to being shot by the German aircrafts. They're don't kill instantly, so you'll have some time to get back. Btw, on high "heat levels" you can also meet them. But if you have a tank or a Panzerfaust, it's nothing to care about (if you in the game zone)

For me the art of invisible walls was mastered by a rpg game "Gothic." The great thing about it was that it was a story element. Mages created a magic barier around the colony, so that any prisoner that tries to leave gets burned to a crisp. Makes sense to me, also it's made better by the fact, that in the sequel you can actually explore the whole island of Khorinis with no boundaries. The third game tried to show a whole freaking continent, but it didn't go quite so well.

It warns you that you are entering a restricted area with a yellow light which then gives you a final warning and turns red. If you continue to move further into the edge of the map the turrets will shoot a laser that basically pushes you towards the opposite direction, without doing damage to your health. You may however die if you are hit with the laser and you collide with a nearby terrain.

I had a demo disc with splashdown when I was about 6 or 7 and that Kraken tentacle to this day was the most horrifying and creepy video game experience I've ever had. It's the games that aren't made to be scary that freak you the eff out when they hit you with these things. Just like crazy colonel from mgs2.

Not able to swim and Rock/Trees formation in Days Gone stopping us from crossing the boundaries is much more realistic

Like almost every open world game that doesn't let you swim has the same shit though. Not sure how this one is considered unique.

MX Unleashed has a similar OOB function as Splashdown, except instead of a giant squid, you just get fuckin thrown back into the map by nothing, accompanied by a cannon sound.

Were I to program an open world game, I would of course use a map, but outside the map I would generate the terrain with a fractal algorithm with the X and Y coordinates as seed. So the player could go on and on, there would come up never-repeating landscapes, lakes, woods, and seas, but the landscape as a whole would always be identical when the player leaves the map covered area because of the identical seed. That'd be a truly endless world and by carefully implementing a wrap around the player even could eventually appear at the other side of the map again, thus having completed a travel "'round the world".

The old GTA SA was hilarious with no walls.. if you did the monster truck glitch, I was sent so high up in space it took an hour and 6 minutes to fall I clocked it, then the swim back on another glitch took 30 minutes and I was using cheats this time to speed time up.. incredible to explore

If I make a game I'm just gonna have God himself come down, pick up your vehicle or whatever and just yeet it back with the force of a thousand suns.

One I remember playing at a cousin's house was an ATV game, and if we went off the map boundary, your guy just gets catapulted of the vehicle. It was very funny.
