I think at this point sonic is so many things at once that, maybe at least to Sega, there isn't any one thing that defines it. This game reminds me of the more head-scratching titles they've made in the past, the difference here being that I feel like they have a fair grip on the type of game they're making to the point where it'll be fun enough. Personally, I can live with that, as I cannot say with confidence that I've had fun with a 3d sonic game since a decade ago. That said, I'd like it if they did try to laser focus on their origins gameplay-wise and find out how to do what the Genesis games did in a 3d space. I think I'll like this game well enough and I'm excited for it, but I understand why others aren't.

Yeah but this isn't really as out of left field as Blaze is making it out to be. Playing it too safe and familiar is how we got a game as generic as Forces and while it was nothing too polarizing for critics, it leaves way too much to be desired for the fanbase An open world kinda concept can actually work very well with Sonic. If the cyberspace levels are more akin to the high speed platformer 3D tiltes, Sonic is known for, then I don't mind a bit of flavor in the form of an open world Sonic RPG

Sonic Unleashed was also 75% Werehog, which is very unSonic. Adventure 2 also had 2/3 of the game not be the speed stages. If anything, the open zone feels like an attempt to make the bridged gap between linear stages MORE Sonic-like as possible while still being more vast in scope. I feel like the game will be received well, but have notable flaws, not unlike the first Sonic Adventure, with the next game being a tighter version of this formula

I want to address something in this video that I shouldn't have said. I didn't mean to gatekeep by some of my comments in this video; it's hard to make this kind of content, because you expect people want big reactions to things, so you try and play up knee-jerk reactions, when clearly that's the wrong idea. I've always known that I do better when I slow down and think through things at a slower pace (I mean, literally, I've been using the "Better Late Than Never" branding on some of these videos for 10+ years), so I definitely have things to think about if/when I do more videos like this in the future. I don't mean to insult anyone! If you think Sonic Frontiers looks fun, that's great, and if you watch to the end, you'll definitely see my views change as I work through things during production. Sorry about that, folks. You're valid, and I have tweaks to make to this formula.

@@reversalmushroom Most people took issue with what he said at around 9:53, myself included. I was very much fine with the rest of the video. I understand his worry and skepticism, despite me ultimately thinking the game looks fun. I just thought that line in particular was weird? It came off as a needless attack toward people who didn't share the same thoughts as he did, which could come off as "gatekeeping". It wasn't as levelheaded compare to the rest of the video, is all.
@jackalruin2 жыл бұрын
I was fine with this up until 9:55. I love Sonic games such as Generations and Unleashed, games that are definitively "Sonic" to me, and I'm looking forward to Frontiers. The comment "If you're looking forward to this, then you don't like Sonic" feels very off and comes off as "I've been a die-hard fan since the Genesis days, so these modern fans don't actually like Sonic". I know that wasn't your intention, but let me explain. Yes, Sonic is all about speed, but I'm honestly tired of the monotony of the same gameplay over and over. That's why I hate Forces: it's just stock Sonic. Yes, this game doesn't scream Sonic and that is an issue for some people, but if someone else did a game like this? I don't think it'd exactly end up like this. I love combat in Sonic, the Werehog was a highlight for me (even if some levels were stupidly long, looking at you Eggmanland). His parry move in the recent Gematsu footage reminded me of why I like Sonic. He's cool, fast, and there's more to him than meets the eye. I like it when he's actually trying, and that's what that move reminded me of. I know combat is odd for some fans, but I feel like this is another classic case of the fan divide. Too many fans think they know what Sonic is, which causes unnecessary arguments and makes SEGA all the more confused. Again, the rest of the video is fine. It's your opinion and I can't get mad at what someone else thinks, and it's not like this'll make me lose respect for you. But with modern Sonic discussion, it's important to always keep perspective in mind and think about the generational divide between fans. At this point, Sonic is whatever he wants to be. As long as he keeps his speed and his personality evolves to still be snarky, while having depth, I'm more than okay with the future of Sonic. Frontiers is looking to be that way, the recent footage looks fast and the story sounds extremely promising thanks to Ian Flynn. Great video over-all, but I'd recommend a more open-mind on the state of the Sonic franchise. I can tell you're for change, but the way you word things is extremely important. Cheers!

Especially in these adventure focused settings, there's only so many spin attacks you can use before that shit gets old (look at his moveset in smash bros). I really think this speedy action game could be a great step in the right direction, but I like action games like kingdom hearts or dmc and it's nice to see Sonic expanding the gameplay loop a bit. The thing I don't like is how dull this first area looks, and the talk of mashy combat. Running around and leveling up Sonic to either get faster and stronger sounds cool to me. I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment that Sega doesn't have a holistic artistic vision for the franchise. It's just their "mascot", guaranteed to sell at least a million copies regardless, and they don't have an active stable of many other mainstream franchises to do things like this with.

To be honest, I had a completely different initial reaction and I think the game looks cool. I can see where critiques come from of the game being "not Sonic-y", but to me I have a wider view of what Sonic is or isn't and I don't particularly mind. That being said, I agree with what you said at the end. The cyberspace levels will make or break this game, as well as the overall gameplay loop. Is navigating the "Open Zone" levels where you swap from puzzle to fighting enemies to platforming and leveling up sonic fun? Is it easy to freely swap between these different moments of gameplay and allow flexibility to the player? I don't think any of these things on their own don't fit Sonic, but will they work together as a cohesive game? I don't think we'll know until we get our hands on it.

Sadly, I'm not even sure I'd consider pinball-like bouncing around as a key mainstay of the franchise at this point. SA2 was the last 3D Sonic game to even really toy with that. I do agree that the game is very distinctively NOT Sonic-like. Regardless of whether it ends up good or bad, it's hard to rationalize why Sega would approve something like this. I just think it's absolutely pathetic that we've been seeing multiple fan-made proof-of-concepts for how Sonic can control in big open environments while also having an emphasis on momentum yet here comes Sonic Team, 4-ish years late to the party, and they have Sonic looking absolutely weightless and lacking in any proper physics or momentum. The way Sonic snaps to walls and slopes when running off of edges with slight angles just eradicates my very soul, ngl.

I completely understand your concern about Sonic Frontiers looking like the most unSonic experience a Sonic game has shown off so far, but honestly, I'm pretty intrigued by the combat that has been shown off in these recent clips. I guess it's because I'm much more affiliated with action games like Bayonetta and DMC so I try to see value in a game that focuses on combat and if it has tools to let the players feel stylish with skills. Not to say I was desperately asking for a Sonic game to have combat, but I always felt Sonic has enough abilities attached to him that could lend itself to a fun, fast paced combat style game, sort of like Spark the Electric Jester. It's definitely a weird concept and Frontiers may end up being the least resembling Sonic game ever made but I can't help but be weirdly invested in what I've seen, for the action at least. Again, I get why you're very indifferent with Frontiers so far.

Plus sonic's moveset has been never clearly defined by the 16 bit era, and shouldn't be limited to that strict 2D formula. I'm gonna be honest, I feel this whole video is completely flawed, lol. I was going to write a disapproving comment where I dislike how you dictating what fans want out of the series, until the last section where you talk about the new footage. I felt you were more reasonable in that section instead of coming off as "Gatekeep-y" in the previous sections. That whole "If you think this game looks cool, then I don't think you actually want to play a Sonic game" comment rubs me off the wrong way. I felt you should've waited until the new drop was completely done before creating this video. For most of the video, you were completely disappointed and upset until you saw the new footage, where you were easier on it? It was strange and I don't really get your actual feelings on the game so far by the end of it. If this was done after all the new drops were done, then I'd believe the video would be stronger overall. As is, it seem like you were going to say this one thing, until more news broke out and it caused you to rewrite your thesis at the last moment. It was weird, pacing-wise.

I agree with you on a lot of these points, in many ways Frontiers gives me a lot of Unleashed vibes; except instead of separating Sonic in two different level types (day/night), they're trying to combine him into a single style and the real question is if that will feel cohesive. My gut feeling is that combat will be a pace breaker, if the incentive to fight is to gain exp then does that mean progression is locked behind being a certain level? They talked about the game having over 20 hours of content, so I'm worried this will turn in a grind which is a very difficult thing to execute successfully. It also just seems SEGA isn't interested in adapting momentum based gameplay in 3D, which is interesting but clearly deliberate for how they want this game to play. Is that bad? Not necessarily, it's like wanting sandbox Mario but you get 3D World and I like 3D World! But they are different. I like the idea of racing against the clock to a specified location in the overworld, given how open it will be there I imagine there will be many alternative ways to achieve that goal. If they capitalize on that kind of gameplay, I think there's a lot of potential. At the end of the day, I'd rather take a different kind of Sonic game then an uninspired Sonic game like Forces. That is to also say I love Unleashed, it's charm outshines it's flaws so I'm with you - I hope we're surprised.

People are furious about Sonic being in the meta era, but when Sega tries to do something new, something that was suggested by several fans several times thoughout the years (or "by no one" as he said lol). Also in terms of combat, this is something Sonic kinda needed desperately in my opinion, because holy shit homing attack spam is boring after like 2 games. I always wished for a game similiar to a series created by a Sonic fan, Spark the Jester. The second/third game got combat hands down perfectly. Like one wise comment I once saw said, 'Nowadays only Mario is allowed to try new things;, and they perfectly summarized that, people hate on Sonic doing new things while Mario has shit ton of gimmicky games and they're still succesful. Sonic isn't about boring at this point, colorful same theme linear levels done at as fast as possible, he's just a fast boi either doing platforming or other cool shit, while being fast.

I love that they'll do all these weird fucked-up experiments that no self-respecting mascot platformer has any business trying out, even if the game turns out to be dogshit and we all hate it. I'm coming from the perspective of someone that's spent more time with games like R, Shadow and SA2 than most other Sonic games, even though the first one I ever played and owned was Mega Collection. Even as a kid, I think the main appeal of Sonic to me was Sonic himself and the supporting cast, not necessarily the classic style of gameplay. Hell, I think my first exposure to Sonic was actually AoStH VHSes. I understand your perspective on the series and what you mean when you talked about people that think this game looks cool not actually liking Sonic games, but I think that comment comes off incredibly mean and comes to a somewhat shallow conclusion about what Sonic is and should be. 6:47 I dunno, I wouldn’t really put Black Knight in that category. The thing about Black Knight is that it ISNT a Sonic game, it’s about the closest Sonic ever gets to a “joke spin-off episode”, none of it is meant to be taken seriously, and it’s kept outside of the mainline series because of that. I think, if anything, it’s a really good example of taking Sonic into a place he’s VERY obviously not meant to be, and still making it really charming. It’s just silly, and for a series aimed at kids, I’m fine with that. Frontiers feels like Black Knight if it didn’t have the veil of doubt or charm.

I don't agree with the idea that Sonic shouldn't be doing melee combat. He does those things in the movie, in the OVA, in the comics, certain moves in 06, in Unleashed's intro, in Sonic Battle, in Sonic Forces cutscenes, and even Sonic X. There's even several pieces of concept art for Heroes and other games where Sonic was doing combo attacks. Sega has always been playing with, or at least approving of, the idea of Sonic being a hand-to-hand combatant. This is simply the first time we truly see it in a mainline game. Also, yeah, that comment about "If you like this, you're not a Sonic fan" was very tone deaf and insulting to your audience. The thing I agree with in this video is Sonic was never about this sort of combat, but if its fun Ill let it slide. As far as the other elements of the open world though, I think they are Sonic-y enough. Sonic Adventure had some light puzzle solving also and this feels like a progression of that. I think the main BIG thing though that took this series in this direction has to do with budget and the team worrying about the game length. Since Sonic is always Zooming through everything, Sonic team has always added in extra characters or gameplay styles in order to lengthen the content of the game. So I understand where they were going with this, I think they felt they needed to add puzzles and combat in order to make the player feel like the length of the game was appropriate for a triple A title. I think they are thinking of this in a bit of the wrong way though, If they just really took their time and made a game a bit longer than generations (Without the 2d sections) And added multiple paths so you could play through it with different characters that all played like sonic but with their own abilities (Like Sonic 3 and knuckles) I think they would have a winner on their hands.

Alright SO... Apologies in advance for the long KZbin comment. I'm not normally one to EVER leave lengthy comments on KZbin, but dammit Blaze, this is what you did to me! Back in the Dreamcast hay-day, when we were running around the Adventure Fields in Sonic Adventure, it was a blast. Like, just zooming up the walls in the Mystic Ruins, or going through parts of the city in Station Square, it felt GOOD. The way they connected full on stages always felt great too. I mean there's something so neat about being at this beach side hotel out by the pool, then walking out towards the beach and now you're in this beautiful streamlined beach level. So.... Why didn't they just do that with Frontiers? Frontiers could have LITERALLY been the mythical "Sonic Adventure 3." Like, there are definitely ways to make a large "open world" Sonic game, but it has to be done intelligently, and not, whatever the hell this is. They could have stuck with a very Sonic-esque aesthetic, given us a large "Adventure Field" style map that HAS fun things to run around and explore, but then have "real" levels that access by FINDING them out in the world. Open World games work by tugging at our curiosity. Breath of the Wild worked because you're constantly on the look out for Shrines, and the game purposefully distracts you and tugs you away from things you were going to look for. In BoTW, we quickly learn there are multiple different outfits and weapons for Link, as well as shrines to boost our health and stamina. Great Fairies for even more perks. We wanted to explore because Link, in EVERY SINGLE GAME HE'S IN always starts off weak, and gets stronger as you play the game. Your exploration is rewarded with things constantly. Sonic has never been that way. What is the point of exploring a huge open space in Sonic when there is no reward for doing so (that I know of, that of course is pure speculation). That, and the world quite literally looks WAY too much l ike Breath of the Wild, and not in a good way. This is a brand new game and yet LOOKS like a game from 2017. There is no cohesive structure to anything we've seen. Why is this world the way it is? Why does it look like it was built purely for a creature like Sonic? Like, to a degree, sure, a lot of Sonic Levels are built purely for Sonic, but they've always been able to hide it pretty well. It didn't break out sense of immersion as much as this does. Lastly, this is coming off of the heals of Elden Ring, a game that quite literally took the Open World concept and absolutely PERFECTED it. Not only is the world From Software built gorgeous, but it they even managed to keep the FEEL of Dark Souls IN the open world environments, combined with Legacy Dungeons which just ARE Dark Souls levels. From Software took an idea and managed to make so many improvements, but even better, they made it their own. Meanwhile... SEGA is doing... This? I just don't get it man. Alright, ANYWAY, I'm done ranting. All in all, great video, dude haha.

New interviews show Izuka and the guys basically wanting Sonic to be a little more mainstream. Lots of people make BOTW comparisons but it's really more accurate to compare Sonic to the Ubisoft sandbox. And I can kinda see where they're going. I'm not sure I like it, I'd want it in my hands playable first, but there is... A certain creative verve I am intrigued by. The combat is not something I'm looking forward to but the tweaks to boosting have this looking like a breath of fresh air for Sonic. Let me put it this way; One of the parts I really like about Sonic Adventure is running around the world as Sonic. I like the stages, but as a kid, running in circles around Station Square has this playful pace to it and I always wished there was more to do than just go between levels and the odd lock and key puzzle. Frontiers seems to be focusing on that, it's reported most of your hours will be running around an island just finding stuff at your own pace. And that's... That's not entirely off basis. I don't want Sonic to become a brawler, it's to me a misguided attempt at fixing a problem that doesn't exist, but if Sonic's core verbs are run, roll and jump, then doing so in a series of sandboxes isn't the worst change to make.

I think Frontier is a fine idea-- a more open form of level design has been something I believe sonic could benefit from for a long time. It's not at all that this is a fundamentally bad concept, it's that they seem to be executing it wrong. This is just IMO, but if you're gonna create open, naturalistic environments then you should cut down on the weird inorganic platforms and rails and focus in on designing the world so sonic wants to run around in it. Give him more movement systems. Let him grab onto trees and spin around them to pivot in different directions while maintain speed, let him run on walls like the edges of cliffs and things, let him skip on water if he's moving fast enough, etc. etc..

Ya know what's funny? It's not the open world or the puzzle elements that make me worried about frontiers. In fact, looking back, I've come to love how out of left field and experimental sonic could be over the course of the modern era starting in the mid 2000s. My problem is that, when it comes to the design elements more familiar to sonic carried over into frontiers, sega seem to be really resting on their laurels. What made breath of the wild feel so fresh on release was how nintendo recognized how stale the 3d zelda formula had gotten up to that point. They did away with the linearity and one use dungeon items that had defined previous zeldas, and expanded on common open world design tropes to create something new. What worries me about sonic frontiers is seeing the same old dash panels, ramps, and grind rails that don't even look like they belong in the environment, and can only serve to restrict movement through the open space, defeating the whole purpose of the open world. Like, the criticism of automation in the boost era is itself a dead horse in 2022, and we've seen the potential of a fully momentum based sonic game through various fan made tech demos over the years. So, seeing sonic team continue to rely on decades old gimmicks, I can't help but be disheartened by what we've been shown so far. I'm hopeful to be pleasantly surprised on release, as we can only judge it properly once it comes out, but I'm managing my expectations to say the leased.

Point 1: The punching and kicking is just natural to me, see every other game or media that has sonic punch or kick, having sonic only do homing attacks and rolling can be boring after a time and mixing up the gameplay combat is more interesting, see gun bots with shields deflecting Sonic and Shadow telling the player to try something else for example. Saying that sonic should not punch things is very weird and just arbirtary for no reason. Point 2: Sonic having a hover board or car or any vehicle in any racing game is him respecting the other racers and playing on their level and is more fair to others, Sonic isn't a cheater. Point 3: I have always been lax on what a sonic game is and not both gameplay and story. To me it's the Adventures of Sonic and his friends, so them or Sonic by himself going off and having so many varied adventures is normal to me. Point 4: Puzzles are more for Tails, Knuckles and their counter parts, I will agree on that. One part that is missing from the previws is the story, so I might have better impression on Frontiers in the future

The worst part of it is Sega seems like it has no idea how to market the game much less handle the crazy feedback it's getting. A simple video showcasing different parts of the game that most games do early on would have been so much better than poorly played demo moments. If the open areas show are for all intents and purposes more of a big open hub and you do have generations inspired levels within a whole hell of a lot of the negative feedback would have never happend. But what worries me is they haven't just dropped that already to calm people down, as if yeah this is the whole game and they have no way of fixing things now. Just a big open world that even ubisoft would cringe at the desgin

Honestly the real issue with the combat in my opinion isnt that sonic is punching things its more that sonic is WAY too stiff when he does anything. If he was going to punch things he would be moving around the enemy and using the force of his punches to position the enemy to advantageous positions all while mixing in some spindashes and homing attacks or just rolling into a ball for further positioning This game's combat system has the exact opposite problem that sonic momentum has , that game's main issue is that you do too much rolling around and moving so it simultaneously looks really boring since your always rolling around and too uncontrollable since you are moving so much you cant make heads or tails (no pun intended) of what your doing while being to disinterested to want to do more

To be fair, I think Frontiers feels more like an iteration/evolution to the series rather than a gimmick-filled, arbitrary departure like the other examples you mentioned (e.g. Black Knight). As you said, Breath of the Wild has become your favourite Zelda game, but I can argue how it has dumped and changed MANY of the core elements of a Zelda game and replaced them with stuff that I honestly don't consider Zelda-like at all. In the case of Frontiers, it doesn't feel like they've taken anything away from Sonic, and just added some new things to improve in areas that felt a bit bland before (e.g. the combat) or areas that felt like they needed to be evolved (e.g. making it open-world/zone). I still don't know whether, in execution, any of this works for Sonic, but it definitely has potential and it's worth giving it a chance. This is probably the best change we've seen done to Sonic for over a decade and I'm remaining optimistic, though cautious.

I think that's the point. Sonic looks out of place because they have done it intentionally. From the interviews we can understand that they intend for the island to be very different from the usual just so we can ask this question - why is sonic in here?. They want us to ask questions. They want the game, the enviroment, and enemies to seem off, be weird and somewhat mysterious.(sorry if the way I explained it has some grammatical mistakes and/or doesn't make any sense. It may be because of the language barrier).

You know I'm of the opinion that the combat is a rather interesting idea for sonic. I was under the impression they wanted to try their hand at making something that looked akin to what you'd see Sonic do in pre-rendered cutscenes, animations, and comics. Seeing him doing something remotely different from just the standard homing attack could be interesting and I'm interested in seeing how it plays out. It's everything else about the game that has me miffed, mostly the bland looking starting grassland that looks devoid of color and proper level design. Open landscapes feel fitting for Zelda since that series wants to create a sense of scale and adventure that usually ties into puzzles and combat, but it deeply disappointed me how shallow the platforming sections look here. Seeing Sonic climbing these weird towers feels so mundane and lacking, you'd think with the verticality they could have pulled off some cooler platforming designs, and maybe the unseen aspects of the game do! I can't say for sure what this game is or isn't going to accomplish at this moment but for a first impressions, it's not particularly glowing that's for sure. I'm actually hoping Sega intended to show this off to get some sort of feedback with the intention of attempting a delay for 2023 but part of me doesn't see that happening. Honestly I could live with and without the boost gameplay, and the fact they probably won't ever bring back the spin dash is saddening but I'd be more than willing to try this game out if the moment to moment platforming looks challenging and varied, not this weird Zelda esque exploration and seemingly strict combat focus. I'm really real hoping this game presents itself more as a PLATFORMER in further footage, because idk about most people but when I play Sonic games, I am expecting platformers. Even the worst and weirder sonic games get that right, and the ones that don't make it very clear they're going to be departures from the formula that are their own thing, separate from mainline/platforming releases. So far this just looks like a weird experiment that I'm slowly getting more annoyed by. Like if they waited as long as they have and this is all they have to show for it... I don't know man it's like what's the point of this game? All the secrecy just feels off to me and they're already announcing to people that you can change the movement controls and all that jazz as damage control and it all just seems odd to me that this was what all that time in the oven amounted to. I feel crazy like I'm repeating myself but I'm honestly flabbergasted at this game at what it's trying to do. I hope I'll like it. I don't want to hate games before I try em but man this ain't clicking. SF6 has slowly gone out of it's way to get into my good graces with the new footage which was a game I was really not liking upon that initial teaser, and especially not the world premiere, but that game actually looks like a complete improvement on the previous entry and going out of it's way to incorporate ideas and polishing the new look that actually has me excited. Street Fighter 5 felt like absolute shit to me so seeing what theyr doing here actually intrigues me. Compare that with waiting for a new Sonic game after Forces which felt like a deaf toned release and a far cry to the effort they made with Generations, like what were they thinking? I'm already pouring in an obnoxious amount of ranting here but my take away is I'm not mad or disappointed at Sega, but I'm annoyed at myself for thinking things were going to go without a hitch. I hope I'm wrong, I really do, but this game just ain't it...

It sounds a little pretentious of you to say that kind of thing. Adventure 2 looked like Sonic when it came out? Well, it does not look or play like the classic games at all. Yet it's one of the best 3D sonic titles (at least in my opinion) The thing is: the identity of a game franchise is not that easy to figure out. Is it the aesthetics? the core gameplay? the story or the characters are written? I think people underestimate a lot when it comes to game development and the people behind those projects. It seems like you say that SEGA doesn't understand what Sonic is but the thing is: what they understand is just not what you like. Let this franchise evolve, jesus christ.

I feel like Sega takes feedback in a simplistic and extreme way. “Lost World needed more polish and focus, and a Mario style run button is way too different from Sonic’s overall style.” Got it. Lost World was too different, so rehash ideas from the past and bring back classic Sonic from Generations. “Forces was bland and generic, relying too much on old ideas and levels that lack in depth or engaging gameplay.” So, Forces was too linear, we must make Breath of the Chili Dog.

Most SonicTeam members, other than newer guys who joined specifically to make official Sonic games, haven't wanted to do Sonic since 1994. The way I understand it, Sonic & Knuckles was meant to be the ending of the series, but thanks to a billion stupid decisions that caused the Saturn to eat shit outside of Japan, SEGA knew their only recourse, their one chance for the Dreamcast to be successful, would be to yank SonicTeam back from their cool ass experiments with NiGHTS and Burning Rangers, and have them make a 3D Sonic game. That's the reason Adventure feels different from the classics, it was made by people who were mostly just there to get a paycheck and then hopefully make something with passion again. Despite this, SonicTeam had gotten so good at making games that Adventure was frickin awesome. So, as planned, they got to make Phantasy Star Online, and the very lucky of the team got to make Chu Chu Rocket during Adventure's development. Most of the oldheads still at SonicTeam from the 90s are undoubtedly sick of the series, this can even be seen recently since they spent a lot of time and money helping with Phantasy Star Online 2's New Genesis pseudosequel reboot thing, which is part of why Forces sucked since half the team was off doing something they actually wanted to. Frontiers seems to be a branch off from New Genesis, and may even run in the same game engine. For the past 20 years, the people mainly in charge of Sonic mostly didn't give a shit about the series.

While I understand where your reaction is coming from I just disagree. To me, Sonic is all about speedy action and fun gameplay, and the style of combat that we've seen in these previews seems pretty much in line with that. I'm not at all confused by combat even being there, and frankly I think that calling this and the puzzle solving gameplay "obviously dumb idea"s is a really limiting and disrespectful way to look at this game so far. This game is a speedy, simple platformer, with rollercoaster-esque elements, but if the game has to include pinball physics for it to be a Sonic game, then hasn't Sonic not been Sonic for about 14 years? And if so, maybe that just means that Sonic has changed from his roots and is no longer bound to what he was in the classics? This is probably the biggest tell for the classic/modern fandom divide, because as someone who leans more into the modern style of gameplay, I think that what we've seen falls generally in line with that Sonic can do, and part of it is him punching things and solving puzzles. And it really isn't just me, there are plenty of fangames that lean into the modern side of Sonic that also choose to add combat and puzzle solving elements into gameplay, with various levels of success. Simply put, I can't wait for this game, but while I understand why you're so concerned, I think you should still be more open to this radical new way of controlling Sonic.

All these comments claiming fan games or Mario Odyssey is better is cringe man. My Brother in Christ, Frontiers isn't even out yet. You haven't played it. Chill out. About the video, this just isn't it man. The whole thing is just, "Now I'm not against change, but let me tell you why I don't like change." You complain about melee combat in Sonic when it's something that's occured multiple times in games like in Battle and Black Knight. The aversion to the idea and that Sonic should just be like he normally is as a curled ball and homing attacks and whatnot is kinda dumb in my opinion. That same thinking is what lead to his moveset in Smash to be so boring and lacking. It can work and considering Kishimoto-san is inspired by the Sonic movie for combat, I think it's in good hands. It'll be more "Sonic" in combat than Werehog with its faster pace and focus on moving quickly. I find the comparison to BotW ridiculous too since it's ultimately not that different from 3D Zelda's of the past. The problem with making Sonic open world is you fundamentally have to change his core design for it to work. Zelda doesn't have that since it was an adventure game from the start. Sonic however, doesn't. He requires a ground-up rework that'll make him mostly different, because point A to B arcade-y pinball physics doesn't work in open settings. Utopia and GHP are proof of that. You can explore and make giant leaps across the map, but it's all meaningless since you just reach the goal and that's it. You're done, nothing for you. Bye bye. All in all, I don't think kneejerk reactions like this are good for video format, and the addendum is proof of that. When more footage came out, your reactions changed. Stuff like this instantly dates it and I think it's best to keep it written since videos are more impactful with added visuals and audio. Let the old pre release footage speak for itself as the reminder and the written be one for what you think.

This, all along, has been the problem with Sonic Frontiers, and more to the point, Sonic in general. They're not building on Sonic's foundations. When you play Sonic games, you're not really playing Sonic games, you're playing games that reference Sonic, but aren't built on that same core of momentum and rolling in the character controller. There are specific characteristics that make/made Sonic what it is. Frontiers might wind up a good game, maybe even a great one, but unless it adopts the core mechanics and ideas that Sonic was built on, it'll never be a good Sonic game, emphasis on "SONIC". I've seen that position called elitism or gatekeeping, that insisting Sonic and his gameplay have a single, consistent definition based in its foundational ideas is an attempt to invalidate the things Sonic did without that definition, but it's not. For the idea of what Sonic is to have any meaning, to be useful as an idea at all, it has to be based in something, the things we think of Sonic for COME FROM SOMEWHERE, and those things were good enough to rival (and beat, depending on who you ask) Mario. You strip the combat away and you're left with a boost game, but what happens when you strip the boost away? What kind of game are you left with? Is it something like a Sonic game? Does it CONTROL anything like a Sonic game? Do the same for Mario. Take away his abilities one at a time in the order they were added, starting with Odyssey (or Bowser's Fury if you prefer), and eventually, you'll be left with SOME version of Super Mario Bros. His jump and its arc, his walk/run and it's buildup and stopping momentum, and his crouch. These are the mechanics, down to their unique nuances, that make a Mario game what it is. Apply the same logic to Sonic and figure out what the last game that was some version of Sonic 1 actually was. Mania's the obvious one. 06? Sonic 4? If we're counting bad takes on the ideas, sure, I mean, we still count Mario Land as a Mario game despite its wonky control physics, and 06 and Sonic 4 are just bad takes on Adventure and Classic gameplay respectively, they just lacked the nuance and polish to varying degrees. Ultimately, it comes down to the subtractive way changes were made. The addition of the boost mechanic, or the parkour, or combat, or the cyloop, or whatever, were never the problem. Removing them was NEVER going to turn whatever the game into something more resembling Sonic gameplay. Hell, adding the spindash doesn't either, Lost World tried that. It's the underlying mechanics, the IDEA behind those mechanics and the nuances of their execution that makes Sonic feel like Sonic. It's why Generations Classic Sonic gets less flack than Sonic 4, because Gens run builds up and slows down in a similar way to the classics, has a similar jump arc, has a mechanically similar rolling and spindash mechanic, and it fails because the nuances are off. Instead of using the game's underlying physics to launch Sonic, it relies on scripting and limits the use of rolling to basically nothing, lacking the true physics system based momentum mechanics and only creating a similar feeling simulacra of them. ADDITIVE changes, however, where the underlying mechanics are left intact, would solve the problem. Not patch it, SOLVE. IT. Build all these new mechanics and ideas ON TOP of the rock solid, literally redefined the games industry and an entire generation of people, gameplay foundation established in Sonic 1, and Sonic's problems of inconsistency and quality come down to how the rest of the game is structured around it. Give momentum Sonic the boost and suddenly, instead of scripted reaction challenges, you're left with finding ways to maximize its limited use for gaining height, or maybe it DOES function as an attack and is a way to blast through enemies, or to regain your lost momentum in a pinch. And it's not like Frontiers' combat couldn't be made to work with his fundamental abilities, hell, if the movement type preset thing works the way it seems to, you could literally just have a momentum based exploration platforming preset, and then have the more fixed movement be for a combat preset. Honestly Frontiers' best idea.

Putting sonic in an "open zone" again may be the push sega needs to go back towards sonic adventure and away from colors. So I welcome the change. 4:49 "Sonic doesn't punch things" While this is true, I must say: There wasn't a precedence for Mario to punch in any game prior to 64. There was a solid decade of Mario content free of combat any deeper than jumping. And beyond 64, Mario never returned to punching. While Sonic has been free of deeper combat beyond jumping/homing attacks in the main series for 31 years, I really don't mind the idea of adding punching into the game, *as long as it's implemented well,* which it most certainly is NOT implemented well in Frontiers, with terrible animations and freezing Sonic in mid-air during aerial punches. Following Frontiers, I'd be content with the game itself having punching but then Sega realizing to not have him punch in future games

For me, Sonic has never been consistent, and that's part of the appeal. Be it Japanese Classic Sonic and American Classic coexisting, changing gameplay styles and voice actors every 10 years, or plots going from bald guy steals animals in one game to the sins of an ancient civilization coming back to haunt modern society in the form of a tortured water kaiju in the very next game; there's always something new here. This is Mr. Needlemouse's wild ride, and regardless of if we hate the series direction or not, it'll change in a few years. Excluding occasional nostalgia bait, the series, like the character, never stands still and is always moving in some direction. Perhaps Sonic Team doesn't know what Sonic is, but after 30 years, what even is a Sonic? We've gotten Adventure Sonic, the modern interpretation of Classic Sonic, Colors Sonic, Movie Sonic, Unleashed Sonic, Boom cartoon Sonic, Boom game Sonic, SatAM Sonic, Twitter Takeover Sonic, '06 Sonic, Mania Sonic, Fleetway Sonic, or Harry Potter Obama 10 Sonic? Some of those were definitely better than others and some were total crap, but there's so many that it becomes a game of No True Hedgehog. I hated Sonic's goody two shoes characterization in 06, but maybe the concept would have worked if the execution was any good.

Sonic games at this point feel so tired I think they need a Breath of the Wild or Mario Odyssey. They need younger developers with new ideas to make something fresh and new and to rethink the conventions of Sonic. There are better ways to go about making a Sonic game other than the common thing of suggesting Adventure, and taking inspiration from Breath of the Wild of all things doesn't exactly work for a sandbox Sonic title. There needs to be people working on Sonic that have new ideas, but also understand what they need to go for to reach a wide audience. I think Sega is so confused about what fans want that they try to target everyone, but that's not the best way to approach it. It would be best to take a page from Mario and have different styles of game release at the same time to hit different groups, that way you could hit Classic fans, Adventure fans, and boost fans by releasing games with different audiences in mind. However, I do believe there could be a basic Sonic framework all fans could enjoy and even non-fans.

I respectfully disagree with all of your points. I’m excited for this game.

I think what both you and I are struggling to come to terms with nowadays is that 3D Sonic's entire identity revolves around having no consistent identity at all, that's really the whole point behind it now. As far as fans go, we're boomers who remember what the good days are like while trying to refuse the reality of the current situation. We've grown up, we're adults. We're not getting the 3D game we wanted as kids because Sega is in permanent damage control trying to please everyone that they made alternative gameplay styles for during the past 25 years of 3D Sonic. People really like these newer gameplay styles, a lot more than you probably think, and it can be hard to realize that. That's why your comment at 9:50 really is an "ok boomer" moment. What you think people want comes from echo chambers repeating what you and I grew up with. It's a big echo chamber, but there are plenty of other fans who do not want a part of it. I got two cousins who like Sonic for the 3D games, they don't care about the 2D stuff. I got friends who barely liked classic Sonic but love the Boost games. We don't represent everyone man, you gotta get out of that mentality. The fans that love the old 2D stuff the most just are the loudest I think lol and probably the meanest overall towards other fans. You bring up fan games like GT, Utopia, Omens, etc and that makes SOME of the fans happy. I've talked to fans that don't care for these games. It's odd to me cause they capture what made OG Sonic so good, but it is what it is, and I understand that a lot of people probably won't like them as well. We got Mania because Sega at least knows that there is a solid 2D path to make Sonic good, but even if you think SA1/SA2 is the best path for 3D Sonic, more people disagree with you than you may actually want to realize, they're just not taking your Twitter poll or subscribed to your KZbin channel. IDK if Frontiers will be a buy or skip yet cause I am getting personally disgruntled with Sonic as well, the past decade was so lame. Nothing to be nostalgic for like the "dark" era even if those games also sucked, with the only good game being a 2D fan game published by Sega themselves. But that's just my opinion, people like all this stuff somehow. I don't get it, but I can accept it. We gotta move on dawg. It's not fun focusing so much on a franchise that doesn't make what you like anymore.
