I think that all-star games has become a s**tshow for last many years and people don't watch it because there's no competition anymore. The reason is, players don't want to get injured in an all-star game. The game itself is irrelevant for their own careers, and also they don't want to let their team down for the rest of the season, which includes the play-offs, the most important part. BUT, at the same time, an "all-star title" is crucially important for the rest of their careers as it impacts their future contracts naturally, and it is for the best players for that particular season (stars like LeBron, Curry etc. are exception). You can't determine an all-star player only by fan votes, as quantity of fanbase itself doesn't show who is the best. Not every voter is thinking like "I should vote for x,y,z players cause they are the best during this season", they rather choose their favorite ones. The new format is stupid, I agree. But NBA is desperate to attract fans back, because again, the careless attitude of players for the game that kills the competition.
