Some of the numbers are kinda crazy, that factory is basically a miniature city. The power needed is for about 100,000 homes, the cost is about 20 billion dollars, the machines themselves are 250M each, the concrete itself is about 10 empire state buildings. It's worth it, but damn.

I work at MMI industrial and steel in mesa Arizona. I’m proud to have worked on beams and angle sent to that job. Actually we still have more work to do for them as soon as they give the green light for the 3rd phase of the project!! It’s cool helping to build something historic and so important for the strength of the nation.

I worked with "ASM" in the Netherlands, back in the 1990's when I was in my late 20's/early 30's, to supply equipment for the company I worked for. I was incredibly impressed by the technology and professionalism of the company. Last time to Phoenix in 2022, we visited the Arizona Game and Fish headquarters and saw the TSMC fab being built. Incredible project.

The cost of the technology, clean & dry room space, the mech systems required to maintain humidity and temperature requirements, process pipe and electrical systems is astronomical. Then there’s the challenge of getting the BMS to work harmoniously is huge. Congratulations to them for getting to this point and now finding the labor to run this place.

I work here currently and while typing this I am at work here..I’ll just say this…Arizona is already turning into the new Silicon Valley around this area living wise…much cheaper then California but if you want land or to invest make a move now we haven’t even scratched the surface 🇺🇸😎. I’m proud to work at a historic place which will be talked about for decades to come. 😂 Good luck buddy. San Francisco was cheaper too until the tech companies moved in in several waves, then we started seeing waves of homelessness because property owners jacked up the rents to push people out to rent to techies and they sold to developers who would evict everyone (or Jack up rent to evict them) so they move techies in. I was homeless (sort of) and did homeless activism and homelessness was a problem before, but when the main bulk of tech companies moved it it was like holding a spoon to a wave. We even started seeing professionals and retirees with paychecks end up on the street. The tragic situation of homelessness now is largely due to those influxes of tech companies from around 2010 to 2015. Those companies moving into San Francisco was one of the worst things that's happened to the city since the big quake and fire. They started gentrifying entire neighborhoods and shutting down businesses (by intentionally increasing rents to kick out regular small businesses) to bring in more rich monied businesses. I hate the tech companies for what I saw in San Francisco, not just what the property owners and developers did, but how alot (not all of them) of them lorded it over people. Oh wait, you are one of those scum??? 😂

It took them three years, but now Arizona has one of the most advanced chips in the world-top of the class, tier 1, the top 1%. These are the very 4-nm and 5-nm chips we need, along with more advanced designs for the future. And TSM still produces 92% of the world's most advanced chips even in 2024.

I first heard of TSMC when Apple had two models, one with Samsung's SOC and another with TSMCs, turns out that TSMC's was way faster, so Apple ended up ditching Samsung and made TSMC-only chips.

And we use less water living here than we did when we farmed the place. We are extending the Tempe town lake down to downtown and growing our transit a lot better than LA ever did. In the video it also stated that the company was going to have to have individual's from Taiwan come and work there. Who is going to pay for the cost of infrastructure to support this operation and the people to work there? Granted growth has costs but the profit of doing business should at least stay in the Country.

You're absolutely correct. Digital information processing is a part of almost every consumer electronic gadget and appliance in existance. Even home appliances as basic as a fridge, laundry machine, dishwaser, and microwave oven - all have controls that incorporate printed circuit boards with integrated circuit chips on them. Modern automobiles get nearly double the fuel economy of their predecessors of the 1970's because computers control the fuel injection, ignition and valve timing. I can state a specific vehicle too, from my own life: I owned a 1978 Toyota Corolla back in the day. Bought brand new, it got about 25 mpg. Even though it had a catalytic converter, there's no way it could pass the EPA tailpipe pollution standards of today. I currently own a 2020 Corolla Hybrid. It gets 50 mpg, and has at least 100% more powertrain torque and horsepower than that '78 Corolla - largely thanks to the much more efficient gasoline engine and the 70 hp electric motor in the Hybrid powertrain - all of this only being possible because of the computers that control the powertrain. The very computers (and in some cases cell phones) that everyone who participated in this conversation thread used to type their comments on, were of course only possible because of the IC chips in them that this factory is going to make when it goes into production.

Americans will now be able to gain experience there, Arizona's colleges will invest more in semiconductor research and engineering. In that regard, the US is gaining so much more than just a fab. I'm very confident that this investment will more than pay for itself just with that alone.

@cjhan47 Yes and no. I've gone to private school and public school the biggest difference wasn't the teachers honestly my public school teachers were often better than the private school teachers. The main difference I found was cultural kids from private school were generally from 2 parent households who were successful and very strict of their kids academically. Kids are very impressionable and want to seem cool and not get made fun of for being a nerd and many times the cool kids are kids who don't care about doing well in school. On top of that it makes it difficult to learn when just a couple of kids are misbehaving in class.

14:51 - This TSMC Arizona facility currently has 14.5MW of solar panels from their one parking lot solar array on the southeast corner of the campus. At 22% capacity factor, that equates to 76.6MWh per day of solar electricity production from just this one array. So to cover the daily 2.85GWh of electricity, TSMC would only need about 37 of their current parking lot solar arrays. They could probably fit another 10 of them on the campus alone and the building rooftops can be used as well. Then the remaining 26 can quite easily come from the vast deserts around the fab or the greater Phoenix/Arizona area. Add another 15% for safety margin and TSMC's own solar would take a massive chunk of their annual load off from the grid. Add in on-site energy storage and see that amount rise significantly. The closer the solar arrays are to the fab, the less grid infrastructure is used because on-site solar unloads the grid. In lulls of activity, these solar arrays would be exporting power and actually supporting the grid. There is also wind power turbine power which can provide power through the night.

@@richardconway6425 The solar arrays are more the likely "grid-tied". So they'll power anything attached to the grid, including EVs. But with that massive array, the EV power draw is a small amount relative to the total output. EV's charged from an overhead array is about as perfect a combination you can get. Big power flowing into your EV's batteries directly from the sky, and totally bypassing the grid. Then enjoy "riding on sunshine". ☀⚡🚗

Great idea, but the solar power would need a massive battery bank as well to store power during the periods of time when the sun is down. Solar would not be able to supply the baseload power needed for a 24/7 manufacturing schedule. But i do agree that it is a good idea to offset the large energy demand on the rest of Arizona's grid. The best option is for APS to construct multiple new reactors at our regional Palo Verde nuclear power generating station. Coming from an Arizona resident :)

It's vice versa; TSMC is more like American technology and hard work Asians; most of the tools in TSMC fabs come from American companies, from semiconductor fabrication equipment to meteorology tools, EDAs, software... even the EUV systems are partly American (the EUV technology was originally developed by US DOE national labs and the private sector in the US; the tech was transferred to ASML, even today the most complicated and critical part of the system, the light source, is designed and made in the US by an American company).

TSMC can’t find enough people with the experience to work at it’s US FABs. That means it will be a long time before the yield (good wafer) will be good enough for the FAB to be profitable. @@alexanderbrown6077 Yes, because TSMC imports over 50% of its workforce from Taiwan. We gave this company billions of dollars and they aren't hiring Americans.

@@MrErizidit's because they literally can't hire enough Americans. They have complained and voiced the issue with building up a local work force. There's just not enough Americans with the experience or education that they need to run the fab. They, along with other chip fabs in Arizona have been investing in the local universities to build/improve the courses and number of students specialized for chip manufacturing. The people they're bringing from Taiwan will help train and teach the people working at these fabs, it just will take time.

@@MrErizid Lmao you made it sounded like they’re hiring Amazon delivery drivers, I’m not saying one is better than the other but it takes way more education and resources to create these workforces for chips fabs. That’s why TSMC are constantly hiring from universities.

Problem isn't lack of skilled workers. Intel has a fab on the south side of town, been there for years. They want skilled workers that will work 18hrs a day, do what they're told, and get paid peanuts. There's a shortage of workers willing to put up with that.

The States are allocated water from the Colorado River based on shoreline. Arizona gets more of it than California. And AZ got its first nuclear reactor about 50 years ago. And you must be a dunce if you think Phoenix has a shortage of heat.

TSMC do a very smart move, having a facility outside TAIWAN ,a contingency plan if China invade Taiwan ,production of chips will not be affected. I'm holding their stock ,and since PRES BIDEN term the economy so good that when i bought TSMC $ 82/share now it is $202/share , PRES BIDEN you are the best.
