There is an error at 1:50. Sodium Bicarbonate is baking soda, not washing soda. Washing soda is Sodium Carbonate - a related compound, but with different properties. You can make sodium carbonate by heating baking soda in the oven - just be careful not to cross-contaminate food.

Which then should we use?
@TerenceMichaelReeves3 жыл бұрын
@@phyllisjeanfulton Sodium Carbonate (washing soda/soda ash) is what you want. It doesn't take very much - I only use around 1-2 tsp in 1L of water. Not that I've tried baking soda -- I'm just going by instructions I've received elsewhere.

This was a well done video. The example at the end where you toned with no bleach resulted in the closest to black I have seen. The bleached one still had a hint of blue after toning. So question....on the one you did not bleach, did you go directly to toning after washing the blue print? Did you let the blue print dry completely before toning or did you go directly to toning after doing the initial blue print wash? I am going to try this and see how close to black I can get. Again...this was a great video!

I always dry my prints first and allow them to sit for 24 to 48 hours before toning. I have tried several types of toning for cyanotypes but the only two I use anymore are ether coffee and or tea with no bleaching for the best blacks though still not perfect or I bleach and use coffee and or tea for a sepia tone. Also keep in mind after toning that it will not have its final look until a day or so usually darkens more in that time. So far instant coffee "cheap kind" or earl gray tea seems to get the best blacks of anything. I tried using pure tannic acid and green tea but they make it a strange purplish hue I did not like. Hope this helps

You mention Sodium bicarbonate in your method as washing soda, but in fact it is sodium carbonate that is washing soda. They are very different chemicals.

Hey, thank you for your time, it's very helpful, but I've been thinking, if i could toning without bleaching, is it possible ?
@matthewbary15 ай бұрын
You definitely can it will just be a different outcome. You can also half bleach and tone as well, which makes a more black looking image. For toning without bleaching, try instant coffee.

Does the second wash water contain white vinegar too? I am referring to the bath after the tea toning. Is that just water?
@matthewbary1 Жыл бұрын
It is just water

I washed a cyanotype in fabric but it got bleached. Can I bring the blue back? HELP PLEASE 😔

Try hydrogen peroxide. If that doesn't work then you probably didn't just bleach the print and instead completely removed the chemicals
