ya I was thinking using a bleach gel would also help. Also not using wood as a stencil and just using a regular sticker stencil.
@konzetsu60687 жыл бұрын
yea, i think one of the harder parts here would be to get the template to seal properly with defined edges, maybe make a negative and add a thin coat of varnish to the non-bleached areas, then bleach it with a positive image. edit: you can also singe the wood with a torch in an negative image to close the pores... was thinking of ways to saturate the fibers to avoid that kind of bleed
@paigebriggs77617 жыл бұрын
Bleach is ineffective once it's dried, so you might have to do a lot of cycles of bleaching and drying to allow the wood time to be bleached.

What about slightly bleaching to make the grain pop? I have some highly figured walnut that becomes so dark when oiled that you lose the flame.
@AMTunLimited4 жыл бұрын
@@yeahhitsa3.0 there are a few man issues that I can see: first, walnut is so dark that any stain would basically be like sharpie and would be too dark to notice Second, the main purpose of stain is to accentuate grain structure (and more grain is more showing off that the thing is wood, which is more better according to modern aesthetic) Third, aesthetic dictates that pure wood is the best looking, because it's more natural. Walnut is especially valuable in this regard, as it has a very striking natural structure. Basically, wood looks great as it is, and walnut looks especially great within that group, and anything applied to it would diminish that quality of walnut.

I wonder how spreading a thin layer of hot glue on the underside of the ply would do. Hitting it with a heatgun should melt it on there, and sanding afterwards should remove the excess. Probably worth a smaller test run though. You still run into capillary action no matter what, wood is a porous fiber, so that's always going to be an issue. I don't think you could cure the bleeding issue totally. I think spraying it down with the bottle and then not letting it sit too long before heat gunning it is the best strategy as far as that goes.

Great idea. A couple thoughts. With the wooden template you have a rigid template that is harder to seal tightly to your walnut. It is also going to absorb the bleach, and as it does, it will soften any crisp lines you have. As an extreme, think of what would happen if you used paper for your template. The bleach would spread through the paper, preventing a crisp line. Some other options: There is a double stick tape that has a bit of thickness to it. It is meant for projects like scrap booking to create some depth to the layers. The tape itself is a gel that is somewhere between 1/8 and 1/4 inch thick. That would elevate your wooden template up off the walnut enough to not let them be in contact with each other, yet create a tighter seal. Alternatively, use something as your template that will not absorb the bleach but will have a tight seal to the walnut. A third option might be to use a reverse template, meaning you would use something cut in the shape of the bleaching you want to do. It would need to be able to hold the bleach (paper might be a good option this time). Lay down your reverse template in your final layout onto the walnut. Then gently brush your bleach onto your pattern until it is saturated enough to hold the bleach against the wood but not enough saturated that it runs away from the pattern. Apply more as the pattern template dries. You can gently peel up one corner of the pattern guild to see how it is progressing.

I've done this with t-shirts. Vinyl is too stretchy to be reliable for fine detail, so I cut the stencil out of plastic coated freezer paper. Cut it out, lay it on your wood and go over it with an iron, which will slightly melt the plastic and adhere it to the wood, then spray the bleach (I used a 50/50 mix with water), dab up the excess liquid with a paper towel and hit it with the iron. Rinse and repeat until you've got your desired result. The heat helps to speed up the reaction, as well as drying the bleach so it doesn't have a chance to bleed. You can get incredibly crisp lines like this. I'd love to see you try this again, see how it would come out on walnut.

I think it’s great, I loved it immediately after you removed the template, it looked like you dug it up right out of an old abandoned temple.
