They need selectable lockers to be exact, which is expensive. Snow and ice terrain with a locker is dangerous (mainly on the roads and off the trails). Safety is the main reason we have open diffs and LSD's from the factory. You could easily lose all traction and 360 right off the side of a mountain even at slow speeds. I almost did that once in Big Bear coming around a curve very slowly even. It's a good thing there wasn't an oncoming car and I had an LSD. If I would have had a locker I have no doubt I would have went down the side of the hill off the side of the road into the housing community below. Lockers are great for off road, but they are a hazard in slick conditions. I've done 360's just on wet roads without puddles 2 or 3 times down here in Florida. The first time I deserved it for hitting the gas like I did shooting out into the highway. The next two times were uncalled for and I went into a curb on the side of the road breaking some teeth off in the steering box. I'm tossing the Detroit and either getting an LSD or a selectable so I can have an LSD in the rear. This is also my daily driver and I'm not spending 25K+ to get a truck with a trailer to tow a jeep on highways because it might rain. I'd rather use that to beef up my tank!

@@waynesanders1406 having a locker isn't worse in the snow or on ice, it's better. Ice on roads or trails isn't even obviously so if there is a spot that's been melted through and you could get traction if it lands on a tire that has no drive than it's wasted. I've had no problems at all on ice or snow or anything with a locked diff in fact it makes it considerably easier.

I just bought a '98 XJ since the new motor for my RX7 lacked compression. It needed some love and as I'm working on it I'm amazed how easy it is (aside from everything just being different never having owned anything American or a non-car). Thanks for sharing videos of what these things are capable of. It's really making it interesting, though the 7 might being sitting in the driveway a bit longer while I enjoy the amazing gas mileage of a Jeep. Thanks for your videos!

Or maybe you’re tired of being locked cause it makes trials too easy for what your rig or driving is capable of.. it’s about having fun. I don’t knock open diffs (except when I’m waiting for them to clear the trail so I can go lol) when wheeling open you can really get creative and really give some gas where as when locked if you did the same your be spending more time fixing them wheeling. I personally have no issues with people being unlocked and I run unlocked as much as I can. Tbh I hate locking my axles cause it makes things too easy. When safety is a concern like slick off camber climbs then I go fully locked but for moderate things I’ll stay unlocked for a long time trying to find the right path and momentum to get through and it’s always way more fun then just walking over something. I’ll wheel more stuff open then most will fully locked as will most people I wheel with. It teaches you a lot of basics about lines and traction that only help you get better. Imop everyone should have selectable lockers and wheel open as much as possible. Then you always have the lockers to get you out if you’re not mentally able to figure out how to get through open.

+Collin Gardner my thoughts exactly. most of these jeeps have thousands of dollars of aftermarket stuff and I'd say about 30% is for looks in most cases. the first 6 major things I get in order lift, wheels/tires, lockers, bumbers/body protection, roll cage, and lights. yes I know there are a bunch of other things that are sometimes needed before these that I listed. depending on what kind of wheeling the vehicle is being set up for of course, but I think lockers should definitely be one of the top 5 mods.

+Collin Gardner, there's also the option of welding the diff. I know its not the best thing to do sense the heat from welding weakens the gears. the great thing is that its a free mod that will completely change the vehicle's off road capabilites for the better. I've never had a problem with a welded diff untell I started running with a tire bigger than 35in.

WK is a hard starting point. Aftermarket support isn't really there. But lockers and decent tires are a great start. My ZJ on 31's with lockers front and rear will out wheel rigs on 33's and some 35's with no lockers.
@logan9305
@logan9305 6 жыл бұрын
Seth Thompson I noticed that there isn't too much for WK, but some of the basics were there; tires and a lift for a little more ground clearance. What my start was going to be was tires (and wheels for them, but wheels were for somewhat cosmetics) and maybe lockers. I don't want to go too big in the pretty stuff before traction and all. But first few things were tires, possibly lockers, and then body protection and recovery equipment.
