He probably wouldn't have grenaded his front locker if he was running stock axleshafts, instead of chromemoly axleshafts. To save the ring & pinion, you want the axleshafts to be the weak-link. They are much easier to change.

Lowly Dana 30HP will take tremendous abuse- especially with a few low buck upgrades- sleeve the tubes, gusset the C's, heavier control arm mounts= good to go! I saw high steer knuckles (WJ D30 parts?) in this vid so I'm guessing the other mods have been done? I ran a lunch box locker in mine for 8yrs before breaking the stock carrier. 4.56 gears and 38" TSLs were a lil too much... A Yukon Grizzly Locker now handles the front end power.

Sleeves are useless if you have a good truss. Just adds more weight.

@Joe Jones Respectfully disagree- Doubling the wall thickness w/DOM tubing certainly does help, esp. on the long side. The lower center of gravity also helps on the rocks. A truss on a LCG build (I only run 4" lift) can also wreak havoc on an oil pan unless bumpstopped to the point of useless. Sleeving- try it, you'll like it.

Sleeves will help keep the tube from bending but won't do anything to keep them from rotating and getting evicted from the housing. Clearance issues aside (if you lift it and use bigger tires you need to properly bump stop it anyway) I'd rather have a truss.

@Joe Jones Agreed on the not spinning except that when one goes to the effort of sleeving, fully welding the tubes to the carrier is de rigeur~ you've got to weld up the rossettes anyway, just add another pass from the housing to the outter tube and let cool -slooooowly- My 8.8 rear end is trussed, but the weight from sleeving vs. trussing (I've not scaled it) has got to be minimal. Happy trails!

We went to the Jumbotron on Tuesday morning, but couldn't find you and didn't want to miss the racing so we just drove out into the desert and started watching and learning the tricks to getting good watch spots.

Instead of fuses, swap out to resetable circuit breakers. You can still run your light to let you which circuit blew, but no fooling with swapping fuses. Fix your short, hit the button, and go!

The coolest XJ lift I've ever seen was done by Ian on Extreme 4x4. Had one ton axles and was for a dude from the military. It was only lifted like 4-6 inches, but had tons of down travel, want to say about a foot. Exactly what I want to do.
