Blended Capitation Model: What would you say to physicians who are considering implementation?

A question and answer series with physicians who have implemented the Blended Capitation Model (BCM).
The province is seeking a compensation model for primary care that allows for more financial flexibility to be creative in how service is delivered to patients. Currently, Alberta Health, Alberta Medical Association, AMA Acceleration Transformation Team and Alberta Health Services are working together to test a viable model for primary care clinics. The Blended Capitation Model incentivizes the Patient's Medical Home behaviours in a different way than fee-for-service (FFS) compensation.
BCM is an alternative to traditional compensation, blending patient-based capitation payments and volume-based payments through FFS. This model provides family physicians with the flexibility to provide services in different ways and deliver a full range of care that encourages health promotion, wellness and teamwork with other health providers. The goal of the BCM is advancement of the Patient's Medical Home and delivering a quality care experience to patients through improved access, continuity and comprehensive team-based care. This model largely eliminates the “whites of the eyes” requirement for physicians when seeing patients in fee-for-service and allows the right clinic team member to provide the right service to the right patient when needed.
