For those who are beginners, following this tutorial may be quite difficult because the instructor does not mention a number of critical things he's doing, like switching between Object and Edit modes. For instance, at around 7:07, he goes Edit ->Object->Edit so fast that if you don't know what to look for, you'll miss it. And then wondering why what you're doing doesn't match his. Another example: 7:31, he says, "Add a plane. Extrude it up." He never mentions SCALING the plane, nor switching to Edit mode in order to Extrude. Having Screencast Keys turned on would have been a help, but he does not use them here (not counting the occasional text added in post-editing the video), so there are lots of pitfalls where he neglects to mention the exact steps he's executing. This is really more of an intermediate tutorial, for those who are more familiar with Blender and can see/know the steps he left out. Some might argue that he says at the beginning, "I've tried to make this tutorial beginner friendly, but I'll be using some keyboard shortcuts throughout the video." However, the title of the video says BEGINNER TUTORIAL. Therefore it should be extremely beginner friendly, not just "sort of." It seems a lot of these KZbin Blender content creators are keen to present "Do this X in 15 minutes"-type tutorials, so they skim through what they're actually doing just to keep the content to the length of time mentioned in the (somewhat click-baity) title. Notice how there are some areas where the video is sped up. How many people *actually* complete this 3D bedroom in 15 minutes? In my experience, most of these "do this in X minutes" tutorials will take at least four times as long, if not more. Which is fine, but when it's due to lack of proper instructions, it can quickly become an exercise in frustration, especially for beginners trying to learn.
@3dgreenhorn2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Katie, I'll try to improve 👍 You may like my new Living room tutorial where I enabled the Screencast tool, and also the video length is around an hour.

@@BobThef That aint the point here bud. The main point is that the uploader neglects several critical things that would lead next step to another. This types of software are learn-by-doing. How can I learn if not all the commands are told? It also doesn't help the fact that I'm not a native english speaker and a lot of time i hear something for something else. for example alt + C instead of alt + E. How does not knowing something makes someone lazy?
@perkelele2 жыл бұрын
Some of the techniques presented here are great to model fast. However it's possible that your models don't look quite well when you export them viewed in a different software. The reason is that some of the meshes were extruded in the negative direction which messed up their normals. When you extrude negatively a game engine won't know what the inside vs outside of the object is. That's what you get when you play a game and clip through a wall and suddenly the entire world is transparant. To fix it: Select the object in object mode Turn to edit mode Press A to select the entire object. Still in edit mode click Mesh > Normals > Recalculate outside.

For those stuck at 5:13 trying to flatten the arc, try this: 1. As in the video, select all bottom points 2. Hit 'S' to activate scale tool 3. Hit 'Z' to lock to Z axis 4. Hit '0' (zero) to flatten the geometry (at this point notice the scale numbers in the top left) 5. Hit enter to confirm your new shape. 6. Profit.

I agree with some other comments posted here: this is NOT a tutorial for complete beginners, counting myself among them. If I hadn't made 'The Donut' beforehand, I would get completely stuck on this one. It's little things like: - Switching between Object Mode and Edit Mode without telling - Not explaining how to place a cursor, or even what it does - 6:22 I misformed the bed pole time and time again before finding out you never said to turn off Proportional Editing from an earlier step - 10:24 You don't mention to exclude the Z axis - No explanation on how to give parts of the play button, books or the paintings their individual color, now that it's part of one object It did teach me a lot of problem solving, and the end result looks absolutely adorable! This video motivates to play around with more low poly projects. After acquiring some more basic Blender knowledge, I'm sure your tutorials are okay to follow.

If you are having problems with mirroring: Go to Object Mode, Highlight the object that the mirroring should be centred around (highlight bed for the mirroring of the bedposts etc) right-click, choose "set Origin" and then choose "Origin to Geometry". Now blender know where the middle of your bed is and the mirroring of the bedposts should work :) Also, make sure that the "Mirror object" in the Mirror modifier is set to the bed.

Note to self. When you're making the bedpost, you need to extrude the vertices, and not the edges. If you extrude the edges, the separation of the two parts of the bed posts won't have the nice bevel. The bevel is kept when the extrusion is applied on the vertices.

5:40 if you are having trouble with the mirror axis center like me : go to object mode > select the footboard > right click on it > set origin > set origin to geometry. It rests the origin of the object used as the mirror center.

Any one having problems at 5:11 if you look at the bottom of your left hand corner (right above the timeline) there is a tab that appears once the object has been manipulated. For our instance it's "move". Open the tab and take a look at the proportional size. Mines was set at 960. How? I have no clue but once I changes it to 1 the curve showed up. It took me 2hrs just to get that. Hope that helps.

It was on "resize" for me, but THANK YOU SO MUCH this was making me insane. I had to change the X and Y to 1 and leave the Z at 0. For anyone else having the issue, when you press "s" then "c" then "0" your shape will look nothing like the one in the video - that's ok, just click to set it, then look at the tab in the left bottom corner and change the "scale" of the X and Y to 1.

Thanks for this great tutorial. I have been using Maya for a decade, and I am really used to its shortcut and modelling process. Now I am trying to expand my skills in other 3D software, and learning more, outside my comfort zone. Your tutorials are very useful and I love to learn while doing all the steps. Keep up the great work :) !

finally found the solution drawers not extruding inward! basically, you have to separate the legs of the table by selecting the leg (press one of the faces and L), then pressing p and selection. you can then add the mirror onto this, and it won’t mess with the drawers. hope it helps! 8:20

This is a really great tutorial. It'd probably be good though if it was made clear in the beginning that there are many issues that can arise while doing this that will require extra research to figure out. For instance I was trying to mirror the bed posts but it kept mirroring too short on the x axis and so I had to eventually figure out that the object origin of my 'box spring/mattress plane' was not centered in the middle of the mass. I'm not sure how that happened in mine and not yours, but it did and required an extra bit of research to figure out. I'm sure there are many more moments where things like that will happen for myself and for others.
@nomkakaii Жыл бұрын
hi there- i'm actually still stuck at this point and can't mirror the bed posts properly... im thinking about just defaulting and making 4 bedposts at this point;; could i ask where you got the solution for this? thank you so much!!
@souvik_saha2 жыл бұрын
If anyone is having problem with the bevel amount with the modifier added to new meshes created from the plane, that's because the plane was scaled down. You need to apply the scale for the modifier to work as in the tutorial. Simply press CTRL + A and select scale to apply scale which will set all scaling to 1, which means the mesh now has its original height, width, and depth and not in proportion.

3:13 if someone got 2 faces not a single one after the bevel like he did, you can delete the edge loops by select the edge loops and press x (edge loops) and it'll be a single face, this also help activate the bevel modifire later

I’m struggling at 5:07 where you press O to turn on proportional editing… when I press O it turns it on, and I have the vertices selected in the middle of the footboard, but when I scroll it just zooms? I thought maybe you pressed a hot key and didn’t say it but I can’t tell what’s happening in the video around that time, my blender screen seems to look the same as yours… I tried just moving it up and scaling, but neither are working that way. If it matters, I don’t have a real mouse wheel, it’s a bluetooth mouse with a touch sensor wheel, so I can’t press MMB or anything, just scroll. Any way someone could help me out?

2:35 does not create the thickness but stretches the two faces creating a distorted copy, any advice?
@robcarp__26432 жыл бұрын
for some reason around 2:40 when I add the solidify modifier to the wall and try to adjust the thickness, there is no fill between the inside and the outside edge of the wall, its almost as if I just duplicated the thin wall and just resized it... any idea on a fix? EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it out. Instead of deleting the faces of the cube I was instead dissolving them, which kinda messed up the remaining two faces. Deleting, rather than dissolving the unwanted faces fixed the issue.
