This is exactly what I was looking for to learn. I was not going to try again with another tutorial which I did years ago because now I haven't got much time to invest on this so I need it to be really worthy. The website to me is not affordable at the moment and I don't see much content for the purposes of character making but I hope to find something similar for this purpose. Also adding materials would be a nice next step, we'll see how it goes

Is there any way to have a subdivision modifier apply to only part of a mesh? I'm trying to make a character model where there's some rougher, defined points on the face, and I'd like to only have the subsurface on only parts of it to make them nice and smoother without flattening those sharper parts.

There are some methods you can try to get the result you are looking for... a little hard to convey here in KZbin comments, but if you send this message to team@blenderacademy.com an instructor will try to help!

Hi, the video was informative, but ... a remark 😉, I'm new to blender, this is my third day, now I understand a little better, the remark is why everyone uses the same models in their tutorials and similar, why it has to be a monkey's head, a snowman and similarly, you all use the same things, but I believe that it can be applied to all 3d models, my first attempt in blender was sculpting a human head and I can say that that part was easy to learn, it took me an hour and within sculpting I used mesh to I get finer details and now I don't know, I believe that add mesh in sculpting and add mod subdivision is similar, maybe it's not, maybe I'm completely wrong, I don't know the difference, isn't there a tutorial that talks about it. You have to understand those of us who don't know anything, that we need tutorials that explain how you showed how to use add subdivision, you all talk about it in the tutorials, how to use this, how to use that, but no one really talks about how it is that connected to other parts of the blender,

Here's an example so you can understand me better, I made a 3D model of a fish in fusion 360, which I printed on a printer, the file is 6 mb, when I used add subdivision I set the render to 5 and saved the file, now my file is 370 mb in size, when I reduce the render to 2 files, the size is 50 mb, I'm trying to put small details on that 3d fish model, such as fish scales and the like, just like others are trying to do something with their 3d model, and this part is unclear to me, I understand what subiviosion is doing on the 3d model, but I don't understand what it is for using other parts of blender and why it is important, so instead of the sphere you stretched it would be better if you explained how we can use subdivision in other parts of blender, if you understand me, we who watch those tutorials really think we know and then it is difficult for us to connect the parts of the blender

Thanks for all of your feedback. Really helpful! We will continue to refine our lessons and examples to better explain topics like these. Just know that these lessons you watched are for people to learn the very basics of the tools well before they are attempting to jump in to the deep end of sculpting human heads or detailing fish. But I completely understand your desire to connect the dots and we will continue to work on doing that in the lessons we continue to develop to help you down the path towards learning and mastering Blender.
