Just a heads up to anyone running Blender 2.9, I was having issues with the Unwrapping in the UV Editor the first time I tried it. Instead of selecting Unwrap as Andrew suggests you need to select all, press U then click on Smart UV Project then click ok. By clicking Unwrap my vertices were an absolute mess every time, drove me nuts. The above method worked perfectly for me!

I'm running 2.92 and Unwrap works fine, Smart UV Project is and automatic unwrapping of the mesh. You don't need to mark any seams for that. In the Unwrap method you have to mark all the seams manually, maybe you missed something (like on edge on the face).

Definitely finding these useful for a little side-project I’ve been tinkering with since finishing going through your donut tutorial. As a beginner, one thing I found with UV unwrapping is that sometimes it just comes down to eyeballing and seeing what feels right. I even found a couple or situations where having a seamless texture over a corner of an object looked somewhat off and adding a seam ended up seeming more natural. It’s as you say wit the “homework”, there are some times where just giving something a go yourself is a great way to learn. Your tutorials certain help give me the confidence to try a few things on my own. Even if your next tutorials tell me where I went wrong and how to correct it. Best way to learn, I find.

For anyone who had stretched textures (like I did), I managed to fix mine by applying my transforms (Object Mode: CTRL+A > All Transforms) and then redid my seams. Worked a charm.
@ChristinaMcKay4 жыл бұрын
Always apply the scale, if you don't it can mess up a lot of things. Not only textures but also modifiers like the bevel modifier or commands like inset. Best practice IMHO opinion is not to scale in object mode at all. If you scale in edit mode you avoid those problems.

If you're like me, and have the tutorial video sharing space on the screen with Blender... You may have some options at the top of the Blender scene crowded out, like the button for switching to Viewport Shading mode. In a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, I saw BlenderGuru do something to slide the buttons over, which clued me in to try things. First thing I tried was using the scroll wheel while the mouse cursor hovered over the buttons. Which worked. TL;DR If you're working in a tiny Blender window where some buttons are not visible due to the size of the window: Try putting the mouse cursor over where they should be, and spin the scroll wheel on your mouse.

9:55 can also choose checker texture instead of image
@DavidAllen_04 жыл бұрын
Yup! Good tip! But the pattern is too large. To adjust this: 1. head into the Shader editor, click the Checker Image Texture and press Ctrl+T (node wrangler addon) 2. increase the X and Y scale in the Mapping node to something larger than 1. For me, I found 6 to be a sweet spot. This will cause distortion for now. 3. Remove the distortion by plugging the UV output (It's Generated by default) into the Texture Coordinate node into the Vector input of the Mapping node. :)
@ChristinaMcKay4 жыл бұрын
@@DavidAllen_0 there is an easier way. Use the free addon Texel Density Checker (a good idea anyway to get the same TD on all parts with just a few mouse clicks.) The TD checker comes with numerous checker maps in different sizes. You can just replace them with a mouseclick.

14:00 about this, I (re-)learned yesterday you can also use 9 on the numpad to "switch sides", pretty convenient :-) (like, 7 for top view, then 9 for bottom view, then 9 again for top view and so on). At 11:33 Andrew rotates the open face where the back rest meets the leg assembly, however I found this affects the curvature / topology (?) of the wood surface in a non realistic manner. Horrible. Now everything is so easy and automated. Thank the gurus for how software has progressed...

Summary: 00:00-01:02 Part 1: UV Unwrapping Now that we've finished modeling, the real fun can begin with UV Unwrapping. It's the step after you finish a model that you need to complete in order to apply a texture. Basically, UV Unwrapping tells the 3D software how to apply a 2D image texture to a 3D model and where to put it. 01:02-01:58 Part 2: UV Unwrapping UV unwrapping involves placing seams onto the model to tell the software how to unwrap it. This would then be displayed in the UV Image Editor, in which any textures added to the model will be projected onto it. 01:58-02:50 Part 3: UV Island The UV Island is a view which can be reassembled into a cube, containing texture and seams which will avoid visible discontinuation. 02:50-03:48 Part 4: UV Seam Placement Discontinuation of seams should be avoided and placed in areas where it is less visible to the viewer when using image textures on a model. 03:48-04:44 Part 5: Beginner's Guide to UV This video focuses on UV unwrapping an modeled chair as part of a series. It explains that one could make the model one object, but in this case the pieces will be kept separate for the purpose of rendering a still image. It begins with the most basic piece - a wooden slat - and how to begin UV unwrapping it. 04:44-05:30 Part 6: Mesh Viewing Viewing a mesh, half of which was created by a mirror modifier. Placing UV seams can save time and make sure the mirrored texture isn't glaringly unrealistic. 05:30-06:21 Part 7: Placing Seams Decide where to cut in order to flatten the object and join it on one end to reduce visibility of any seams, resulting in the whole piece becoming one seam. 06:21-07:17 Part 8: Mark Seam in Blender Use Edge Select mode to select edges, then Control+E for mark seam to make the line red. Other colors indicate different properties such as sharpness and crease. One cut is needed to complete format. 07:17-08:12 Part 9: Crafting Seams Texture on the front and top is different, seams placed on back/bottom to hide from camera, apply mirror modifier to copy over to other side and uv unwrap to finish. 08:12-09:08 Part 10: Active Workspace UV Image Editor can be opened to see what has been done; selecting everything, hitting EU and then selecting unwrap is one method to unwrap one object; making a black canvas to see if it's done properly is suggested. 09:08-09:59 Part 11: UV Grid Preview To preview a UV Grid in Blender 2.8, create a new material and add an image texture to the base color. Then, select the UV Grid option from the dropdown menu. 09:59-10:54 Part 12: Checking UV Grid Test whether an object is properly uv unwrapped by viewing its uv grid. If it is not properly unwrapped, there will be stretching in the texture. 10:54-11:54 Part 13: Using Mirror Modifier Using the mirror modifier to rotate an object and form a solid face with an 'f' key to prevent bad topology. 11:54-12:51 Part 14: Applying Seams Check the photo reference to see where the real wood has seams and apply them accordingly. Make sure it is solid wood to get the grain. 12:51-13:56 Part 15: Editing Details Someone suggested to edit the foot of the chair, however, the bottom piece is not going to be seen by the camera so it doesn't matter. Then the speaker rotated one piece and sheared the next piece and then rotated the background piece. This forced them to learn a new technique. 13:56-14:44 Part 16: Hotkey Tips A quick overview of a useful hotkey involving the number pad. Holding down shift, control and number pad 1 allows one to view the back leg while number pad 0 allows one to view the front leg. It is also suggested to use one main seam when joining two sections. 14:44-15:37 Part 17: Seams for Cutting Making one seam on the red line and another on the other side to keep parts without seams if possible. Having empty faces is desired and seams can still be used to completely unwrap. 15:37-16:30 Part 18: Seam Fixing Fixing terrible stretching by giving seams at certain places to clear it up, although this cannot be done perfectly without spending hours doing it. 16:30-17:26 Part 19: Creative Seaming Creative seaming can help reduce undesirable stretching when working with a model. This case shows how a subsurf modifier can help, but one must also carefully select the edge of the object to avoid issues. 17:26-00:01 Part 20: Tightening Graphics Preview of the graphics and tightening them up. Reference to a terrible University advert. Adding a hard seam at back to remove stretching.
