FAQ:
Q: My background images won't show up after dragging them in.
A: Ensure that your view is properly aligned (press 1 on numpad to set view from front). You also need to be in orthographic (as opposed to perspective) view. You can toggle between ortho and perspective with 5 on the numpad. If, for whatever reason, simply dragging the images in does not work for you, you can also add them manually by pressing 'n' to open the properties panel, navigating to the 'Background Images' section near the bottom, and pressing "Add Image".
Q: Pressing the numbers only changes frame/layer.
A: You need to press the numbers on the numpad (as opposed to the top row of numbers). If your keyboard does not have a numpad, go into preferences and in the input tab check 'emulate numpad'.

Hey! To anyone having trouble here you should really listen to this video 10 seconds at a time and follow EACH step carefully...hit the pause button often! He goes fast but covers A LOT of useful things within minutes...you'll be mad at the beginning when failing easy tasks such as selecting things... but don't give up... try things yourself, experiement, then come back to the video. This is a VERY good tutorial... the guy really knows how to teach... thanks a lot ! Math

Every 6 months or so, I get it into my head that I'm gonna make some shit in blender. I download it, install it take one look at the UI and think "I'ma need to get me some tutorials". So I watch some guy talk for 6 years about this Button, or press up down left right A start together for something and get super bored and decide to "learn by doing" this step in my blender phase lasts for about 30 mins when I try to make something from scratch, using only a picture in my mind. It always looks like shit, I mean...of course it looks like shit only a lunatic would expect AAA quality modelling right off the mark. Unfortunately, I am a lunatic and I expect this. Anyhoo, fast forward...um...4 years or so and 5 minutes into this video and I've made an actual person, mostly...no head yet but...It's recognizable as a person. You could look at it and think "huh, that's a humanoid body without a head" which is the farthest I have ever gotten in the world of 3d modelling. So...Thanks, I guess I should watch the remaining 18 minutes of video...

This is a pretty good tutorial. I have a few critiques I hope you don't mind. Not trolling or anything I just want to make sure your viewers know some extra advice. For characters it's advised to keep all polygons the same amount of space apart and try to keep the polygons equal on all sides, this prevents texture distortion. Also if you used mirrored uv space make sure you bake your models from a high resolution to a low resolution as this gets rid of pesky seams from normal maps. Also any object that isn't being manipulated by bones for animation such as accessories like weapons or articles of clothing like a hat or sword should use object space normal maps, and not the usual tangent spaced, as this will increase performance in your game and cut back on real time normal lighting manipulation. I see you are creating a toon style character though. For these types of characters it's best to get the most from your uv maps. So you want to make uv islands bigger depending on what part of the character that's mostly seen. Like the face, and head area as well as the shirt and pants. I would make those islands the biggest. Awesome tutorial. Thumbs up. C:

Yeah, one other thing that I tend to do when making low poly chars is to start from a limb using a cylinder with 6 or 8 vertices to keep the "roundness" of the body as a starting point. I like the cube method as well, but the perspective view adjustments can require more experience and aren't as systematic from a non-artistic user's view. You can achieve a decent effect without any perspective view tweaking. The ortho 1 and 3 + references are plenty and the shape is great.

For those using Blender 2.8, the properties menu section where you set the background images doesn't pop out when pressing N. The options he was using is now in Object Data Properties. In default layout, that section is in the lower right hand side and has a tab with a triangle and a tiny circle inside a square. The options are laid out differently too, but with a little experimenting you can arrange the pictures like he did. Next, there's a checkbox that tells blender to emulate a number pad if you're using a laptop in EDIT > PREFERENCES and going into the INPUT tab. If you check that box, you can follow how he changes orthographic perspectives using the number keys above QWERTY. The "Remove Doubles" command is now Merge Vertices > By Distance. Note: I'm using Mac, so there might be a variation between the OS's.

In college ASL we had to watch VHS videos. But we didn't get to control it. We had to sign in to the library, select a computer and the clerk would put the video in from where they were. We sat down and had to endure 40 minute videos that had only 20 minutes of content... musical interludes, scenic cut-aways and text chapter changes. It was EXCRUCIATING. The pitfall was that if you were lulled into boredom, you might miss something when they started talking again--and there was no control to rewind. At least with speed, you're mentally on the ball and you're right there on the go. With YT you can control by pause or replay. The uploader puts up what the uploader puts up (because it was best for his comfort level of teaching.) If you're slow, then get acquainted with PAUSE and SCRUB (the slider). If it's too slow, learn to use the speed functions.

Mrbuck Don't worry dude, try to model with simplier programs such as Techne (when you can work perfectly with Techne and jump to Blender it may feel a bit strange, but is part of it, in fact is like learning a new languaje, start with something simplier and then add more complexity until you completely domine it.) I would like to say this is pretty simple, but like I said I have previous experience (and I need to familiarize a bit with the contorls and environment), if you decide to follow my suggestion of using Techne first start with simple minecraft-like things, if not then draw simple things to make 3D on Blender later, by simple things I mean things like.... Magnemite from pokemon maybe, basic shapes. Well I hope you can advance and learn quickly regardless of the method you chose, good luck.

Mrbuck There's a good series of basic modeling tutorials and educational videos on Blender at gryllus.net/Blender/3D.html A lot of it is very simple, basic stuff to help you find your legs with the program, but I've found going through it all helps immensely. One thing to keep in mind, though, is the guy used an older version of Blender when making these, so for a couple things, you may have to search around for solutions. Not enough to be super problematic, though.

I've been using GIMP, and making a front view image, then a side view image. But, when i go to start modeling, the parts of the image, like the eyes and nose, are in different places. Your tutorial is just the right speed, I've began to make a model after watching your video once. I did have to pause the video a few times to write down the controls to do certain things, now with the controls, my character is coming together. Most other modeling tutorials are so simple, they over complicate things; trying to make everything perfect. Great tutorial for beginner models or low poly models!! :)

@astienback

What kind of game are you playing? Give the name of your "teacher" or his youtube channel! If you're that honest you should have given more PRECISE references! You ought to know that credibility is based on precision not on "I know someone who knows someone...". Tutos will always suffer from critics well-founded or not they could be. It would be fair to not wrap them in rumors. IMHO this tuto remains one of the best around and YES, you've got to have a minimal experience of Blender controls. And YES again, don't be that naive to think that as a newbie you can JUMP directly to an ambitious animation... with Blender whatsoever... don't be that naive. The less naive you are the fairer your opinions will be.

astienback the man I'm talking about that teaches everything Blender- from 3d modeling to animation is Darrin Lile, a man who has actually done this for a living. Now he puts awesome videos on youtube for free! Look, I'm not hating on this guy here. He has a killer accent and is very entertaining to watch. And you are right that you gotta have a basic knowledge of Blender before going in- that applies for both tutorial creators actually, but- the thing is- I feel this one requires a bit more than that. You see, I didn't go in here with zero knowledge of how blender works and all, but I still got lost midway through, because he is speaking in shortcuts and very fast. Maybe I'm just siow and everybody else learns just fine, but I feel the other guy does a better job at teaching.

well then don't complain about character creation being too complicated when you don't even know the software yet. This is basic box modeling, and its the same in almost all software, blender being the exception for ease of use. Blender has way more tools and utilities making production much faster for designers. Coming from someone whos been doing graphic design for 15 years. You should be able to do this without reference images and without the tutorial, its simple extrusions. If you can't move vertices around in the shape of a human, maybe graphic design isn't for you.

Just a little hint. Don't create faces one by one (like from 13:40 on). Instead, select opposite edges/loops and press W (specials menu) and choose Bridge Edge Loops. Voila! You have all faces created (edge # has to be equal). Otherwise thanks for a great tut! My fav style: good pace, details balance, etc. Perfect for those who have some experience with Blender but are noobs in organic modelling :-) Good luck!

There is no way that you can predict how many time I need for that. Sometimes I even think that tutorials like this will replace school education ;) Cheers.

I am gonna swear... This is the fucking best tutorial i have ever seen... now let me explain Most tutorials are long, even more frightening and intimidating... You always have to rely on them to guide your every move... and when you are done, YES you sit with some amazing work if you manage to complete it... How ever if i asked you to remake it without help? Not a chance. This? Its basic, Simple, Amazing you get the feeling that when you complete this and If i ask you to remake it, you can remake it... Because its just so simple. And thats EXACTLY how i want tutorials to be... Just easy enough that you can sit with a feeling of actually accomplish something and Learn... Not to make some "Amazing work" that you didnt do on your own. Great job!
