Learn more about Sub-D modelling www.hardvertex...
We need a chess board before we can start making pieces.
Here I will show you both a simple method and a more advanced method of creating a chessboard in Blender.
It takes ages to make these!! Please consider supporting me!

Very interesting! I did not realize a simple chessboard can have such topology considerations. I am struggling with topology when I model, so I appreciate your videos.

Thank you Elvera. It can be intimidating at first but once the understanding falls into place I think it is a beautiful and satisfying way to model.

So glad I found your channel (I'm new to Blender, around 3 weeks worth :) ), your modelling skills are amazing, so thank you for sharing your gifts and talent and I'll be binge watching these over the Christmas period :) Any chance you could model a Knight chess piece please ? Merry Christmas to you and all your viewers :)

I love these tutorials! There's so much to learn and you explain everything so well. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Also I wanted to point out that in the metric scale a centimeter is 0.01m (just for the sake of accuracy and perfectionism)

The loopcut all around the edges is an exception: you cannot move this afterwards (with scaling it on x and y axis), because it would change the shape of the chess pattern's outer border.

Thank you for this! When you Mark Seam to highlight control loops, does it create a cost later down the pipeline when it comes time to UV unwrap and do more advanced texturing?

Great tutorial! I like to not type the leading zero for extra speed. E.g. 0.01 becomes .01

Then I suggest you invest in a keyboard with a more satisfying thump. I sometimes add extra leading zeros just because they are fun to press.

Hey, Ian. Happy 2024, hope you are doing well. I have a question... I don't think I ever saw you using bevel, but EVERY single tutorial I see, they always talk about how nothing have a perfect 90° corner, so we should ALWAYS apply bevel (at least for realism). What is your take on that?
@ianmcglasham
@ianmcglasham 7 ай бұрын
Happy 2024 to you too! It is correct that, at sensible observable working scales, nothing has an impossibly sharp edge as you can find in 3D. There always needs to be an ability for light to flow around an edge. This is what makes things look real. A bevel is a very simple solution to this problem but I would never ever use a bevel to do this. A bevel basically breaks the fundamental necessity for any model to be adapdted if a design brief changes in any way. A bevel locks a model to a specific radius of curvature and a spatial resolution which is very difficult to change later in the process. Any changes after beveling become virually impossible. Beveling is very much a beginners technique, not used in professional modelling. Beware of the hundreds of KZbin modellers advocating bevels. Just because everyone seems to do it does not mean it is correct!!! Look for techniques taught by people with verifiable studio experience. Bevels are used to create control loops on a subdivision cage with good spacing but are not used to curve edges on models.

At 8:29 when press e, the loop is going automatically to overlapping another one, What is going wrong?
@ianmcglasham
@ianmcglasham Жыл бұрын
Hi friedrich. You may have conformed the placement of the loop, so pressing "e" at that point will extrude it. You need to undo that extrusion. Select the loop again and press "gg" before pressing "e". Hope this helps. Let me know!

@@ianmcglasham Not sure but Ctrl + R, E, F did the job this time, may be related to somethings I get confused because my keyboard layout does not coincide with the letters that are printed in the keyboard.

@@ianmcglasham Outside of a handful of programs that use keymaps instead of keycodes (Like some games) or keymaps when should be using keycodes (I don't remember one) everything works fine.

why is there no part 1 to 7?
@nathanwood4762

The chess set is part of a larger series about subdivision modeling. Parts 1-7 were about primitives with better topology than the defaults, how to make complex forms without booleans, and moving poles for better loops and deformations. All good stuff. Find it in his channel page under the videos tab.
