yeah you could try to make this in a non-destructive way, but holy damn the speed mate

whats the advantage/disadvantage of doing destructive and non destructive way
@bluematter435
@bluematter435 5 ай бұрын
@@kurostyx9124 its speed vs flexibility non-destrucive ways (also known as procedural) can easily be changed at any point, but take a bit longer to setup (say we wanted one more row of holes for the grate, that could be done in just one click if working non-destrucively) (usually done through modifiers or geometry nodes) working destrucively its fast but harder to change later, requiring the person to do everything again from the start, or try and modify what's already there, (if you need an extra row of gaps, before it was one click, now to do the same thing you need to select the last row, copy and paste, translate the right distance, break up the mesh, stitch it back up with the extra row.) there's a bit more nuance to this (sometimes using modifiers will be faster than doing the destructive thing, in such a case it makes no sense to do the destructive thing) but that's the gist of it, both of these ways can save time and effort, one is not better than the other, but rather they complement each other.

@@bluematter435 thanks so much for the answer, so basically plan out if something needs procedural or doing it one by one

@@kurostyx9124 you're welcome! also don't worry about doing it super efficiently / cleanly. There is no right or wrong way of doing it, and you should just have fun making things

This should beally be done with an alpha map unless you will be up close to the object... like really eeally close

It really depends on what you’re trying to do. Small detail on a larger scale model? Yeah, it could just be a plane with an alpha map. Otherwise, it’s usually better to have geometry to go along with it
@SilasMckeeIII
@SilasMckeeIII 9 ай бұрын
I mean i def agree, but it really only depends on if you need to see thickness, for instance I would not use an alpha map to make cracks in a fence since the 2x4 has a decent amount of thickness, however let's say you make a spatula, or rips in clothing (which in game engines you can actually use texture painting to paint rips on clothing to make it interactive with the game), or again really just anything that you don't need the thickness to I would use an alpha map (well actually I'd use an alpha texture but I'd use it with dither instead of an alpha channel because of reprojection being more expensive on the GPU and maybe even more than the geometrywould of been in the first place but you can cheat using dither, atleast if youre importing to UE5). So again, I agree, it depends on the situation, which is kinda the difference between a pro and non pro which is knowing what tools you have at your disposal and when to use which one
