In this video, we'll go through the 5 ways of semi-automatic retopology, exemplified by our stone.
1. Triangulate and convert tris to quads
2. Remesh modifier
3. Shrinkwrap modifier
4. Contour add-on by CgCookie
(cgcookie.com/blender/2013/07/3...)
Thanks for watching! In pt.3, we're going to sculpt this stone using dynamic topology.

Only other way I knew was quite tedious and manual- using shrinkwrap to bind a plane 1mm or 2mm above surface of target mesh and hiding the plane, placing new vertices that snap to the surface of mesh. Then using the polybuild tool (in 2.8). I think there is also an add on called F2 that can help but I've not used it. Thanks for showing me some other ways!

I love your tutorials. They answer many questions I've had. Keep 'em coming bro. Thumbs up! Even more they are short and still answer my questions. That's fun.

Non manifolds are the bane of my existence, so this was extremely helpful. Thank you. I like tutorials that are brisk and don't take forever talking but this was a tiny bit too fast. I had to rewatch a few times. Still very helpful. I think there are some other add-ons that help with that too right?

Tris quads tends to be my favorite. When I saw the stones video that's immediately what I thought of, needs retopo!

Exactly! Tris quads is more or less obscure and mysterious. But it works, and sometimes works really well. This all methods are viable to some extent :)

ctrl "t" in edit mode triangulates the 6 sides in a cube. but all the uv unwrapping etc. seems a bit tedious for what should be a simple one button go process to ascii export. :\ -msi

I've found retopologizing high poly rocks particularly difficult. I've tried different combinations, but none of those retain strong contour of the original model.
@GlebAlexandrov
@GlebAlexandrov 10 жыл бұрын
Indeed, retopology of complex model is tricky, in terms of contour preserving. Sometimes, the best solution is to do it by hand, using F2 plugin, Grid Fill and other tools to speed up this process. Or combine semi-automatic solutions with manual.

Step 8 - ask someone to do it :) Yeah, the list goes on and on. The topic of retopology is quite wide - in this vid we discuss mainly automatic means of retopo.

Hi. Arent trises bether than quads for game. Thx
@recurveninja

If you're still interested: No, models should still use primarily quads, and triangles should be avoided wherever possible. This is because triangles interfere with subdivision, which is often used to create higher-poly versions of models so that they can be used to bake normal maps, and it also interferes with animation, because triangles simply do not have enough points to deform cleanly. However, when the graphics card is rendering things, it renders them as triangles anyways, where 1 quad is just 2 triangles connected diagonally. It does this because it's just faster to run calculations on 3 vertices than 4. It's worth mentioning that there's nothing necessarily wrong with using triangles on completely planar surfaces that will never be animated or subdivided.
