In this video, we'll explore how to create a stone using Bisect -- new tool in Blender 2.69. It reminds me of Zbrush clip brushes -- one stroke to cut the sphere in half and so on. The drawback of this method is geometry, filled with n-gons. Though, it is usable.
In the part 2, we'll quickly retopologize the stone.
Thanks for watching!

I've started using this method for similar things. I find it's great for getting a basic shape, then I use a remesh modifier to sort out the geometry and finish off with some high detail using dyno sculpting.

Thank you! At last, something that functions like zbrush clip curve. Plenty of ngons, though (it looks like now we need dynamesh analog :).

For 2.8 users, search if F3 key. Also I lost in thought that bisect freezes my machine but after you hit enter to use Bisect (or can be reached at Mesh->Bisect), then you need to drag left-mouse to select which direction to bisect. Thanks for video!

Thanks, Vicente. This effect can be achieved with Vertex Paint (dirty vertex colors), then invert this dirtmap and use it as a mix factor between 2 materials - dark and bright. Watch the latest tutorial on Blenderguru - it covers this topic. You'll just need to invert it in material editor.

I know this video is years old, but as a beginner this is an awesome tip. For those struggling to keep up, a "KZbin Quick Tip" for you: Click the Settings icon on the video, and change the speed to 0.5. Also, for those other tutorials that are just a little too slow, speed it up to 1.25.

Hi Gleb, I was wondering how you did the scene at the end. Is there a common way to multiply instances of an object and spread them around like that? I'm guessing you didn't place them rock by rock. Also thanks for this smart and fast tutorial, it helped me quite a lot.

I know this is 4 months late, but if you're still wondering (and for anyone else that might see this), you'll need to hit the "N" key, check "matcap", then click on the orb and change to the lighting/color scheme you prefer. More than just aesthetics, some of these lighting schemes are more helpful than others for determining the 3-dimensional accuracy of whatever you're sculpting, so I'd suggest playing around with this from time to time. Hope this helps someone
